I think it is about time we give this topic more attention. This challenge is sooo cool it deserves top priority. I remember hearing and reading about the previous two crossings and I always dreamed of doing the same thing or something similar. When Jack recently asked for two more volunteers to participate in the skating I seriously considered it for a few days. Then I realized how hard it is on your muscles to keep pushing that skate mile after mile. There is no way I could achieve such a feat nowadays. I truly admire Jack and his friends for taking on this challenge.

Besides the physcial challenge involved there is also charitable cause associated with this Skate Across America: All proceeds from donations and sponsorship (sign up here)will be given to the Lowe Syndrome Association (http://www.LoweSyndrome.org).

How Your Donations Help

Research
Your donation will support crucial medical research that offers hope for a better understanding of Lowe syndrome, more effective treatments, prevention, and perhaps even a cure.

Education
Your donation helps support publications that provide accurate and up-to-date information to parents, teachers, and physicians all over the world.

Support
Your donation helps join families together in a unique network of mutual support, helping them to overcome feelings of isolation and to cope with the constant challenges and difficulties they all share.

I'm looking forward to news along the way (hoping that they will continuously report through the web) and reading about their trip once it has been accomplished.

Good luck!

I scanned in the article from the 1984 crossing for those of you who haven't seen it.

Read the article

Some of the scanned pages are quite heavy (~200kb) as I wanted to keep the text readable.

Thanks Jani,

I just re-read that article a few days ago. I also read some of the 1976 journal to my son, Dylan, he is now mocking my use of the word "Primo".

I competed in a 5K running road race on Friday. Terrible surface, 90 degree heat. I started in the back of the pack and had to work my through the masses, givinf the runners a wide berth, as they were nervous about me careening out of control and mowing them down. My time was 18:11. Could have easily been in the 16's if I would have been more aggressive at the start.

A big thank you to Brad Ellman, Marcos Soulsby Family and Richy and Maria "Sk8kings" for their generous donations to Skateboarding Across America - On Board For Lowe Syndrome".

A couple of days ago I was talking with Don Hoffman about a his new TV show "Surge" which is aired on the new Fox action sports channel. I mention to Don that we are in need of three cameras to document the skateboard trek across America for National Geographic Television, he calls back the next day, gives the name of a guy he knows who has done some promo work with Panasonic, he also gives me the name and email address of the head marketing honcho at Panasonic. Don tells me to drop the Panasonic guy an email mentioning Don's promo friend.

So I send the email, introducing myself and our skateboard crossing of America, I ask him if they would be interested in supplying us with three video cameras, telling him that we would return the cameras when the trek was done.

The very next day morning I receive an email from Rudy Vitti of Panasonic saying that they would be happy to supply us with the cameras. And it gets even better, Rudy tells us to auction off the cameras at the end of the trek and donate the proceeds to the Lowe Syndrome Association.

These are top of the line 3-chip/24 frame cameras that retail for just under $4,000. Needless to say we're stoked.
Thanks Rudy and Panasonic.

There's this guy, Ron Davis, who works in sales at Etnies. He calls me up a few weeks ago, says he heard about our trek from Beau, and wishes me luck, also says he'll somehow make a donation. Yesterday Ron calls again, tells me he rounded up some old Etnies products and other skateboard products from friends in the industry and had raffled it off at a July 4th block party, raising over $400 for the Lowe Syndrome Association. I was almost in tears as Ron told me this. So many things like this have happened since we announced ther trek. And so many of them were done by the readers of this forum. Thanks to all of you!

Coverage of Skate Across America in today's Oregonian newspaper (7/24/03)

Front page of the Oregonian sports section has a long article (20 paragraphs) about the upcoming start of the Skate Across America. Picture of Jack Smith and Jeff Raynolds.

Small insert telling about the benefit race this weekend in Vancouver, Washington. (Entry fee consists of a donation to Lowe Syndrome).

Looks like things are heating up for the kickoff. Good Luck!

Hello Friends, Family and Sponsors,

On Tuesday morning we will depart for Newport, Oregon where will begin skateboarding across America on Saturday at 8:00am.

Myself and the team would like to thank each and everyone of you who have helped to make this trip possible. This trek is much more than just pushing skateboards across the country. It is a journey of hope and love. Hope that with more research funds, someday a cure will be found for Lowe Syndrome. And without the love shown by all of you this event would have never been possible.

Below you will find a link to our web site that Gary Fluitt and Stan Strocher are building, it is not complete yet. It will be ready by our day of departure. We invite you to share the link with everyone you know. We have also listed our cell phone numbers.

Dateline: Casper, Wyoming.

150 miles skated today. Started at 7:45am finished at 5:00. My teammates, Josh Maready, Nick Krest and Scott Kam are incredible. Nick took a fall when he hit a storm drain during a downhill stretch, bloodied, but yet undeterred.

Paul Dunn and my boss, Jeff Reynolds left our band of rollers today. Both of these guys made huge contributions to the effort. Jeff was originally only going to skate two days but stretched it to seven. He was a real help with logistics. He also bought the team meals numerous times and kept the team supplied with Gatorade and water. He also doctored up Scott's blisters. I am blessed to have an employer/friend like Jeff. PD stepped up and skated some fast legs and
also served as assistant crew chief and head video guy. Paul, you will never know how much it means to me that you came along. Cresting the Continental Divide with you yesterday was legendary.

It is hard to explain what it is like to skate between 30-50 miles a day. The heat, rough road you would never dream of skating on, steep uphill climbs, semis whizzing past you at 70+mph, the occasional idiot driver who pretends that he is going to run you off the road. You skate your 3 mile segment, flop into the van, suck down Gatorade or water and wait for your next turn which always comes to soon.

I have taped pictures of Jack to each board we are using, the guys tell me they draw inspiration from them, so do I.
At times I find myself talking to Jack as I skate along, or just remembering things about him. Tears are not uncommon.

Please share this forum with your friends and family. You can also direct them to: http://www.asphaltplayground.com/lowe.html

As always thank you for your support.

If you need to reach me by phone: 805-391-9385.

PS - I want to thank Joe Beck for skating with us across Oregon. Joe is an incredible skater and person. I am proud to call him my friend. Joe, we all miss you!

Skateboarders Set Cross Country Record - Coast to Coast in 21 Days
Raise Research Funds for Lowe Syndrome - Father skateboards Across America to
honor deceased son.

WILLIAMSBURG -- After the gravelly roads of Oregon, and the vertical inclines of the Colorado Rockies, Virginia's Route 5 rode like a dream.

"Oh, God, the pavement, it's so gorgeous. It's perfect. Some of the smoothest roads we've had all trip," said Jack Smith, 46, who rolled into Williamsburg Friday on a yellow skateboard, breaking his own record for cross-country skateboard journeys.

Smith, 46, and three fellow skateboarders - Josh Maready, 24, Nick Krest, 38, and Scott Kamm, 33 - began a coast-to-coast skateboard-only journey about three weeks ago in Newport, Ore. They sought to set a new world record and raise research money for the Lowe Syndrome Association, an organization trying to find a cure for Lowe Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that killed Smith's 14-year-old son in May.

Twenty-one days and 3,000 miles later, they accomplished both goals, Smith said. They raised about $15,000 from individuals (and another $15,000 in corporate sponsorships to pay for the trip) and beat Smith's own 26-day record, set in 1984.

Just after noon Friday, the four men turned onto a quiet North Boundary Street in sweat- and dirt-stained T-shirts, jeans, and shorts. After about 3,000 miles, they casually stepped off their boards and plopped onto the grass in front of the city's Community Building.

"Looks like we made it," sang Josh Maready, 24, the only professional skateboarder in the group.

They covered about 140 miles a day in relay style, each skating two miles at a time aboard special "Rolls Rolls" skateboards, designed for transportation with large, soft wheels. Other skateboarders joined them along the way.

They encountered certain challenges - like navigating roads without paved shoulders, explaining themselves to state troopers and riding over dead possums, snakes, lizards, frogs and coyotes.

"I had to run over road kill all the time," Maready said.

Smith, who lives in Morro Bay, Calif., was a prominent skateboarder in the '70s and continues to compete. He first traveled across the country on a board in 1976, when he and two friends were looking for a way to avoid getting a summer job. The second time, in 1984, he and three skaters raised money for Multiple Sclerosis and, he said, won an entry in the Guinness Book of World Record

This time, it was for more personal reasons - to draw attention to the disease that killed his son, Jack Marshall Smith, a happy boy who used to love to ride on his father's shoulders, coasting down hills on a skateboard.

Researchers are still looking for a cure for the disease. It strikes only boys, causing cataracts, glaucoma, kidney problems, mental retardation and seizures. Smith's son suffocated when his lungs filled with fluid.

Smith said he was touched by the outpouring of support he and his fellow skateboarders encountered all over the world, from fellow skateboarders following their progress on the Internet to strangers who heard what they were doing. In one small town in Nebraska, a teenager opened his wallet and gave them all seven of his dollars, he said.

Outside Vinton, Iowa, they met a 12-year-old boy with Lowe Syndrome, who brought a little sign that read "Go skateboarders for Lowe Syndrome."

The hardest moment came when Smith asked the boy for a hug goodbye.

"When he hugged me, it was almost like I was getting hugged by Jack," Smith said. "The next run of skating, it was very hard not to cry. For that one second, it was like Jack was back."

Not really latest news, but I'm posting this mail from Jack Smith here for completeness of the topic.

What they did was a pretty cool thing and it deserves a good follow up. Here's a series of the articles that were published during their World Record trek across America. /Jani

Rolls Rolls Auction - Tod Swank Rules

Post by Jack Smith » Thu Oct 23, 2003 1:45 am

Ok, it's not slalom

Just wanted to share this with you. A couple of weeks ago I posted one of the RollsRolls boards we used on "Skateboarding Across America - On Board For Lowe Syndrome" for auction on Ebay. I set a reserve of $1750. It wasn't met. A few days after the auction, Tod Swank of Tumyeto emailed saying he had just heard about the auction, and was wondering if the board had sold. I told him it hadn't and that I would let him know before I re-posted it on Ebay.

So today I dropped him an email letting him know it was going back on Ebay. He asked me what the reserve was, I told him it had been $1750 but that if he wanted he could have it for $1250. He responded by saying he would purchase the RollsRolls for $1500. Absolutely amazing.

Tod had already made a very sizeable donation (four figures) to "Skateboarding Across America - On Board For Lowe Syndrome" through Tumyeto. He also helped to promote the trek through his skateboard.com website and newsletter.

Makes a person feel good about the skateboarding family.

SAA on AOL

Post by Jack Smith » Fri Nov 21, 2003 5:53 am

Hello Everyone,

On Tuesday, Nov 25, the "Skateboarding Across America - On Board For Lowe Syndrome" story will appear on the AOL welcome screen for 15 hours. The story was chosen from thousands of entries in the "AOL 15 Hours of Fame" contest. There will be a 3.5 minute video for broadband users as well as a story and a link to the SAA Journal. There will be links from the Journal to both NCDSA and SlalomSkateboarderdotcom.

A film crew from AOL spent the last two days here filming interviews with myself, Nick Krest, Scott Kam, Paul Dunn and Dylan Gordon. Thanks to all of you guys, especially Nick for making the drive down from San Jose. They also shot footage of the older guys listed above at the Templeton skatepark. Dylan and I were filmed running some cones in San Luis Obispo.

I would like to once again say thanks to my wife, Maurine, who puts up with and supports all my skateboarding activities. Also a big thanks to Stan Strocher and Gary Fluitt for their work on the SAA website. And last but not least, to my boss Jeff Reynolds who supported the trek from it's inception. He backed the trip by giving me a month off with pay and skated with us from Newport, Oregon to Casper, Wyoming.

Guest skaters Eric Boyd, Joe Beck, Kenny Mollica, Gareth Roe and Wes E., who Scott dubbed "Wes Virginia" also made great contributions to the trek, as did all of you who supported us online and with donations to the Lowe Syndrome Association. So far we have sent them $10,000, with more to come in the next few months.

Thanks,
Jack and the SAA Team

Jack,
Me and the family said a prayer for you and yours tonight.

I don't know you, but I know you are a good soul, and worthy of it.

Keep the fire burning!

Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for the update! The show has been aired all over the World in the last six months...except in America. Hopefully soon.

So far over $20,000 has been raised for Lowe Syndrome research.

I look forward to skating with you someday.

Jack

I know I'm going to catch a lot of heat for posting in such an older topic, but I was looking for info on Lowe Syndrome and I happened to stumble upon (literally -- used StumbleUpon) this thread. Jani is absolutely, positively correct! This really IS a great cause and it DOES deserve a tremendous amount of attention. Also, being a skater makes this particular challenge SO worth it. My cousin Rob (2 years old) was recently diagnosed with Lowe Syndrome and I've been wanting to help out with anything I possible can. He's such a cutie-pie and it's such a shame that he's had to go through this entire ordeal. I just hope his condition doesn't worsen to the point where he'll need eye surgery or need to be put on the lists for kidney transplants . The renal problems are probably the scariest of all the symptoms. =( I'm hopeful that he'll be alright throughout his lifetime, but I can only imagine how stressful this condition is for him.

Anyway, you guys seem like a really wonderful bunch. I realize that the Lowe Syndrome organization is still around, but are you guys still holding these "Skate Across America" events? Surely, you can count me in. Either way, I'm stoked! Take care, everyone. You've all got really, big hearts! =)
