Hey Guys

A local news station contacted me that they want to do a little piece about slalom skateboarding that's going on in and around Greensboro NC. I will be having a jam and they will come and film. I thought it would be cool to have a little crowd of us skaters to show how positive of a sport it can be. It should happen either this sunday or next. Do you remember when Lisa was on Good Morning America? She was asked about how often people get hurt, she said she had seen people get really hurt. Maybe a question you should be ready for. I'd suggest something along the lines of that since we take proper safety precautions, we actually get hurt a lot less than the average skater.

. I will express that there are risks, but with the proper use of safety equipment you can avoid almost all serious injuries.

According to the following, skateboarding is safer than basketball, baseball, and soccer :

NEISS (National Electronic Injury Surveillance System - a division of the Consumer Protection Safety Council) injury statistics for 1998 show the following sports ranked by number of reported injuries per 100,000 participants.

Basketball - 223.5
Baseball - 115.7
Soccer - 62.0
Skateboarding - 20.2

And according to the following, skateboarding is safer than basketball, baseball and softball, bicycling, football, soccer, and trampolines :

Consider the most recent statistics from the SAFE KIDS Campaign:

basketball
More than 205,400 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for basketball-related injuries.

baseball and softball
Nearly 108,300 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for baseball-related injuries. Baseball also has the highest fatality rate among sports for children ages 5 to 14, with three to four children dying from baseball injuries each year.

bicycling
Nearly 285,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries.

football
Almost 185,700 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for football-related injuries.

ice skating
Nearly 10,600 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for ice skating-related injuries.

skateboarding

The conversion rate can really skew the sample.

Yeah, you're right. Since we're talking people and not dollars, a canadian is worth much more than an american...

Karl - don't you have a cast on your leg?

At least you won't have to explain why your board says "Fullbag" and has an upside-down heart on it!

Maybe you could throw in a couple plugs too - slalom at Woodward this summer / US Nats in CO / Worlds in HR. Makes it sound much more mainstream!

Karl, I strongly second what Joe and Mig recommended. Nail down a couple of very relevant points about skateboarding's relative safety and be ready to use them. Practice them until you can spout them off in just a few seconds. Be brief but clear.

Yeah if the reporter looks like they want to by your grass or meth just ask them quickly if they want to buy and then give them a good price.
