World Ranking intro

How does it work?
Enter slalom events

and you get rank points.
How is my point calculated?
This is the most common question. So let us get that out of the way directly.

And at the same time answer the second most common question "How is my friends point calculated?"
The answer is the same.

Fast lane:
If you only want to see how your point is calculated.

You will look through the initial steps later.

And all the small details can wait until you have a specific question.
Often people ask how the World Ranking works. The short answer is above.

It's not always easy to explain in one or two phrases. We understand that everybody may not have the courage or time to sit down and read through all the details around the World Ranking Rules.
So let's start to give an easy overview of how the World Ranking works.

- Step by step introduction
- Dictionary
- Tables and Listings

Note! These are the 2024 ranking rules.
Every year looking back may have variations.
Step by step introduction
Step 0: How is my point calculated?
This is the most common question. So let us get that out of the way directly.

And at the same time answer the second most common question "How is my friends point calculated?"

The answer is the same.
All is explained in the section World Ranking Calculations .
Conclusion:
If you only want to see how your point is calculated.

You will look through the initial steps later.

And all the small details can wait until you have a specific question.
Step 1: Discipline count
1. Your 6 best discipline point results per year will count.

2. You can only count your 2 best disciplines per competition.

3. The 6 best results will give you your yearly World Ranking point total.
Conclusion 1:
The World Ranking expects that you travel to a minimum of 3 competitions per year.

And enter at least 2 disciplines in each of these competitions.

Ranking points are given for each discipline class and depending on the event status. See rank points below under the section Tables & Listings.
Step 2: Boosting your points
Entering more than 3 competitions will normally not affect your total point as much as your first three ones.

But, if you can get more and better result points than what you previous have, then you will be able to increase your total point by exchanging your lower points with higher ones.

But remember that even if you have 12 counted discipline results, only your 6 best will count for the ranking.
Conclusion 2:
The world ranking is not only showing who are the fastest. It also weighs in travel and attendance.

The more you travel around on high level competitions the more you increase the likeliness of getting good points.

By travelling and competing in more than 3 competitions you increase the chance of boosting your total world ranking point.
Step 3: Event status
More event status background info New 2024
To be able to have a 100% fair ranking we would have liked all the racers in the world competing in the same competitions all the time. This is not possible for the moment.

For most that are competing this is not super important maybe, but the better racer you are, the more important it becomes. To try and solve this problem the World Ranking system will filter out some competitions each year with higher statuses.

The existing statuses in order of importance are: Major, Main, Prime, Basic and Plain.
World Skate Level
If the event is an official World Skate event, with a high level backing, granting a superior quality event. Then the event will also get a status boost.

Major++ (World Skate Games)
Major+ (World Championships)
Major+ (Full World Skate support)
Main+ (World Skate granted event)
For now, each year there are very few "Major status" competitions. Often there are two such events. One selected on each side of the Atlantic as the highest ranked event of the year. For the moment they have been placed in the most active slalom regions. North America and Europe. These competitions should attract most of the top racers.

Now we have also every second year a World Championship at the World Skate Games. This can be organized in any part of the world.

Note 1!
World Skate Games are excluded from other Major Status logic.

Note 2!
You can only count 1 Major status event per year. If you attend more, then only the one with the highest points will be counted with Major points. The other ones will be treated as a Main status when it comes to World Ranking points.
Some competitions will have higher points to give out and should attract those who want to compete for the highest placements in the World Ranking.

For the top skaters this is important but for many others it will not necessarily give you more points. High status events will have many top racers. Going to a lower status competition with less top racers attending may give you the same point in the end.
Conclusion 3:
The better slalom racer you are the more important it becomes that you enter the high status events.

Especially if you want to be among the top racers in the world ranking. Then you need to attend one of the "Major status" events each year.
Step 4: Event classes
If few racers are attending a race all can run together in one open class.

With more racers you can start dividing into classes depending on both ages and gender.

And for the open classes you can further divide classes into Pro and Am classes.

See more class info in the Dictionary section World Ranking Discipline Classes.

Also you will have more info in the next section Step 5: Pro and Am class.
Note!:
The more you can divide into classes the more fun for the racers.

For the rankings there is now a strict division between Men and Women classes. Before we had no strict Men class and also Women results could go into that Open class.

Now starting 2024 going over to strict Men classes, Women will only get points for designated women classes.
Step 5: Pro and Am class
More Pro and Am class background info
Pro does not mean you are a professional racer. See Pro and Am class more like an A and B class. The idea is being able to set more demanding courses for Pro class than for an Am class.

Pro is partly a class you select yourself. And partly can be forced if you do well in bigger events. If you start to beat pro racers it´s time to move up to Pro class.

There are two race classes that a Pro racer can enter. Pro and Open.

There are three ranking classes that a Pro can be counted for. Pro, Open and Pro-Open.

A Pro class can turn into an Pro-Open class. An Open class can turn into a Pro-Open class. Pro-Open means that Pro and Am racers will be counted as running together in the same Open class. But Pro racers get Pro points and Am racers get Am points.
For the moment Pro and Am class only exists for the Men class. Not for the women class.

Pro/Am Definition
PRO racer does not mean that you are a professional in the normal sense of the word.

For us in the slalom skateboard world it only means...

Pro class
1. No longer a beginner
2. Have a high enough slalom skill
3. Want to compete and compare with the best racers.

Am class
1. Beginner
2. Not yet enough skill
3. Not as serious with competitions.
Women Pro and Am class info
Men class has two sub classes.
Pro and Am.

Women has not.
We have not yet created a Pro and Am class for Women.

There are not yet enough women racers to want to separate them in two classes.
Pro and Am subclasses only exists for the Men class right now.

So for men it is important due to ranking points to be aware of Pro and Am classes. An Open class will count less than a Pro Class but more than an Amateur class.

If there are enough Pro racers in an Open class it will be counted as a Pro-Open in the world ranking, where Pros will get Pro points and Ams will get Am points.

Limits depend on World Regions. Check the current Region pro limits.
Conclusion 5:
For Pro racers it’s important to race in a full Pro Class at competitions.

A full pro class giving pro points must have enough pro racers attending the race.

For Pro’s it may be important to judge if it´s likely that enough pro racers will be attending the event.
Step 6: Ranking types
There are two types of rankings for the moment.
One Year ranking.
4-year ranking.

The year ranking
Shows who was best for a given season. 6 best results counts.

The 4-year ranking
Shows who have been best over the last 4 years. Including the current year.

2 best seasons count.
Conclusion 6:

World rankings are the 1-year rankings, except for the two most important classes.

World Ranking for "Women" and "Men Pro" class are the 4-year ranking. It´s not just a one-year saga. It´s hard work over a longer period of time.

This demands other talents than just skating fast and getting good points for a specific year.

Since two of the last four years are not counted, it will handle situations of season injuries, or other private situations, that may result in less competing in a specific season. With this system your ranking will not be totally destroyed in these cases.
Step 7: World Regions
RegionLevel
South AmericaMedium
North AmericaHigh
EuropeHigh
AsiaMedium
OceaniaMedium
AfricaLow

Some settings are according to geographical world regions to give some sort of skateboard World balance. For example Event status and Pro racer limits.

All regions are independant and have their own level. But even if lower level for a high status event in some world regions there are also less high status events. So it keeps the balance in order anyway.
Conclusion 7:
Each World region filter out events that will have a higher status and extra points to fight about. That way all skaters can make a better judgement of their travel plans. In some regions going to a lower status competition may very well have just as high a level of field as a higher status competition. It´s just that the World Ranking points to earn are lower.

Have a look at the calender listing statuses for all world regions. Settings may change and updated each year depending on the development of the slalom skateboard scene.

Note! Check the current Region event statuses.
Step 8: Registered results
It’s important that your points get registered.

It’s the responsibility of the event organizer to publish competition results and make the World Ranking aware of them.

Also you as a competitor is responsible to help out and making sure your results are not missing.

If in doubt contact the event organizer and remind them to register their results for the World Ranking. Tell them to have a look at their organizer settings page for their event, where it is explained.
You can also contact the World Ranking administration or slalom coordinator for your country or world region.
Conclusion 8:
If the competition results are not published or unknown to the World Ranking system, they will obviously not be counted into the rankings.

Help out with making sure that results are getting registered correctly.

There is normally a deadline in February, after the ranking year has ended, for correcting year ranking results.
Organizers:
You can add your results to your event yourselves. Make sure to select and set up a person for this work in good time before the event starts.
Dictionary
Here are some important explanations of terms used for the World Ranking.
World Ranking Disciplines
The standard slalom disciplines.
- Super Tight
- Tight
- Slalom
- Giant
- Super Giant

Courses can be set straight or irregular (special).

Example of other slalom disciplines.
- Banked Slalom
- 25, 50 and 100 cone
- Park slalom
Note!
For other disciplines than the mentioned. Make sure that disicplines are accepted.

Contact ISSA if not sure.

The same if you want to try out a new odd competition format. Both ISSA and racers should be prepared before the race.
World Ranking Points
Points are depending on the event status and class you are competing in. There are algorithmic point tables for each event status class.

See ranking point tables in the Tables & Listings section below.

There are actually two kind of results.
- Race results
- Ranking results

And both of them have overalls.
- Race results
Placements for each discipline/class as how they were run.
Overall (according to the overall point table in the slalom rules).

Overall counting all disciplines. Unless organizer have excluded disciplines from the overall.

- Rank results
Calculating rank points for all classes (as much as this is possible). Disciplines running only one OPEN class for all racers will have all classes calculated automatically.

Only 3 disciplines are calculated towards the ranking. And these you select when you register the events.

You can add up to 6 disciplines in total. 3 ranking disicplines and also 3 extra disciplines.

Ranking overall counts the two best discipline results from the three ranking disciplines.
World Ranking Calculations
The ranking point calculations may have some twists and turns. It may not be easy to understand in some special cases. Luckily there is help for better understanding your ranking points.
At your personal ranking homepage there are two sections of interest.
Event results.
Ranking results.
Event results
This sections shows all your event results for a selected year. Ranking points given depending on event status, class and placement.

Click event to open up all discpline and class results. And you can see the ranking point given for each discipline result.
Ranking results
Shows all year classes you have for a ranking. Click a ranking class to open up information behind the ranking point.

And you can read about how the ranking point has been calculated.
Example: 1 and 4 year rankings
The 1-year ranking is calculating its points from the yearly ranking rules used for that year's events.

The 4-year ranking is calculating its points from the 4 latest year's balanced 1-year ranking points.

1. Go to a racer's personal homepage.
Click this icon to open the racer search panel.
Look for the section panel: Ranking results .

2. Open up ranking results for 1-year rankings.

Here you see all the 1-year rankings. With placement and points for each year. For 2024 this racer has placed 1 in the pro class with 3824 points.

When you select one of the 1-year rankings, a panel will open up and you will see in more detail how the yearly point was calculated.

As you can see for this racer, the total ranking point for 2024 was 3824 points. And here you also see the balanced point 1000, that is used for the 4-year ranking.

1000 points is the highest balanced point you can get. And means that you had the highest total ranking point for that season. Each year, the highest ranking point for that year, will be 1000 points. And then the rest of the points, for that season, is a %-calculation towards the top point.

In this case, personal 1-year point 3824,
divided with the highest 1-year point 3824,
is 100% of 1000 points.

3. Now let us open up 4-year rankings.

Here you need to click on the wanted year in the table to open up the details.

You see the balanced ranking points from the latest 4 years. The two best years are counted 100%. The other two years are not included (counted 0%).

So, in this case the 4-year ranking point is:
1000 + 889 = 1889 points.

All classes can be mixed when racing. And be freely divided for prize ceremony by organizer.

Note! For ranking points, classes are always divided, for both ages and gender.
Open classes All ages

See more info below for then "ranking point table sections".
Ranking classes

A racer may be valid for multiple rank classes.
Juniors will be included also in the class above them.

For example:
Kids -11 (age 0-11) will also get included in teen rankings.
Teens -14 (age 12-14) will also get included in junior rankings.
Juniors -17 (age 15-17) will also het included in Women or Am rankings
Masters 45+ can also be included in Women or Am rankings.

Even Pro Masters can also be included in Masters rankings. Master classes have no Pro/Am division.

The ranking tries to calculate all classes automatically but it will depend on how class divisions has been made during the discipline racing.

When you run the discipline with one Open class then all possible rankings for a racer can be calculated according to class rules above.

The same if you run as one open Men + one open Women class. But if you start to divide further it may alter what rank classes that results may be inlcuded in.

For example:
If you run a Junior class those points will not be included into a Men or Women classes that also have been used.

If you run classes for all Junior classes separately (-11) + (-14) + (-17) racers will only get ranking points in each of the classes they run.
And same if you run a Masters class those points will not be included into a Men or Women classes that also have been used.

And 45+ racers that choose to run the Men or Women classes will not get any Masters points if there is a special Master class also running.

When an event race A, B, C-classes it will be treated as one big Open class. Where results will be registered in the order of the classes.
For men where we have Pro and Am classes an Open class will divide the men into separate Pro and Am rank classes.
Rank selections

For racers who belong to to multiple classes they can de-select classes that they are not intrested in.

- Pro in Masters class...
There is possibility for Pro racers to skip having points for other classes than pro. It is when you get age 45+ that this becomes useful.

Then if you want to continue racing pro class then you can de-select the Master class where you will not race. You can also do the opposite thing and de-select Pro and only start to race as Master.

- Masters in Am and Women class...
Same as for Men pro above.
All who get age 45 can also select to continue racing only only Am or Women class and de-select the Masters class.

- Juniors only in its own class + one class above.
This is the basic filtering we have. But also for Juniors -17 can select if only want to be included in only in one of their two rank classes.

- Now Men and Women are separated.
This have made things a lot more clear now. For Juniors especially where girls could be in a lot of different rank classes. Now it is the same logic for all juniors.

- Why did not my child get any points in the Junior (-17) and Women classes?

It can often be that there is only one Open class. And the class logic described above is to eliminate situations where a kid was for example the only girl racing. And then could be seen also as the number one Woman.

Or the kid was the only junior and then would be seen as the nuber one in the Jun -17 class. So this is a way to protect the integrity of the age classes.

- Harder rank class divisions

One could imagine you are always only belong to one class. And that you can only compete in that class and get ranking points in that class. This might be the way to go when there are a very big scene and a lot of racer competing in all classes all the time.

But this is not the case now so we have a more open class philosophy right now, even though not completely open.

This is also a topic in many sports to not stress racers into the senior classes. And this even if they very well could have the level to manage.

I.e. let the young racers have their time to develop in the junior classes first. Now for slalom, the age limit where you start to be counted into the Senior rank classes (age 18-44) are age 15.
Rank class confusion

With the rank class rules there might be confusions when you are on the limit between classes. And if you compare with other racers that have a similar age.

One race maybe just have passed a class limit and another have not. And this affect the rankings and how they are calculated.

On top of this there might be further confusion if comparing the 25-cone World Series and normal slalom rankings.

The 25-cone world series overlaps two years. For example from June 2025 to May 2026. And in this case you stay in the same class as when you started the series June 2025, even when the last part in 2026 is done.

And there is only one Junior class (1-17).

For example:
[ 25-cone World Series 2024/2025 ]

Series results

A racer is 1st place in the "Junior Girl" class. But not in women class.

- We only have one class for all juniors Age 1-17.

- With the series running from June 2024 to May 2025, the series passes over a part of two different years. The class you have at the beginning of the series (2024) is kept until the end of the series (May 2025).

[ Rankings 2025 ]

From 2025 the racer will be in both Junior (-17) and Women class. Ranking points are always visible for each event.

In this case Session #4 and Session #5 for 25-cone series were both running during 2025. So you can see the placement and ranking points for these events.

Ranking points for Session #4

Ranking points for Session #5

On racers personal homepage you can see all events and classes a racer has for 2025. And once the first ranking is calculated for 2025 you will also be able to see all classes for the ranking results.

Conclusion

So in some very special situations during a short time it may be that a racer just on an age limit can be...

- Included in the Women class in the world rankings.

- Not included in the Women class in the 25-cone World Series result rankings.
Event Discipline Titles
If you want to handle National or World Region titles inside an international event there are some things to think about.

- National Championships.
- World Region Championships.
Ex: European Championships.
For these kind of events there are actually always two kind of winners.

1. Event winners.
2. National Title winners.

This only becomes an issue if a country want to use an international event to handle national results. I.e. when you have racers included in the event from outside the event title nationality.

For example...
- If you have none national racers on a national championship.
- If you have none World Region racers on a World Region championship.
- If you for example have None European racers on a European Championships.
Be aware of Titles

Event titles is something you should be aware of when running such events. You can handle that in many different ways when it comes to trophys and/or medals.

- Trophys for both event winners and title winners.
- Trophys for event winners and medals for Title winners.
- Only Trophys for event winners and just announcing/counting Title winners as well.

You can do that as you want. But there are always these two kind of winners.

Overall rankings are normally only done for the event winners. But for sure it could be done for national purposes as well.
NOTE!

If National Titles are very important you might want to think this through. It can become sensitive when deciding this running H2H finals where it might be unfair that some National racers will be stopped by None National racers". And you might then want to have this figured out before the race and not after when it could become sensitive if the outcome will differ depending on what format you use.

In these cases the most fair could be using the Qualification times for the National Titles (when there are H2H Finals with none national racers). And if you really want a H2H final for the National Title you could set this up as an extra H2H race if needed.

If you have forgot about this you can use the above as official national title handling to fall back on.
