Re: POST ONLY REPLIES, don't use New Topic
The first day of Slalom St. Louis 2012 is over. Single-lane hybrid went off without a hitch. Forty-eight racers got four runs each in about four hours. Temperatures were in the high 90s (35 degrees C), but everyone seemed to survive OK. Sunday is supposed to be even hotter - and we're doing dual-lane 100-cone courses!
Good luck to all the STL racers, and bon courage to all the Paris racers!

After seeing 3 incedents of wheels having there hubs cooked off and some beefs from it , the time is now to end the era of people takeing out there spacers and tightening the bearings in the effort to make a course! Too dangerous and you dont know when it is going to happen to you, Bearing spacers are your friend! One of the worst ideas of all time!

Re: POST ONLY REPLIES, don't use New Topic
Anyone that was at Farm #4 - my first - will remember my "tripod" finish.
I did that very same "lose the spacer" drill and my wheel heated up and came off the bearings, leaving me to finish on only 3
But I did indeed finish!
And I popped the board up at the end so I didn't damage the tape strip
Maybe someone needs to develop "training wheels" - ones that roll very slow with proper bearings and spacers.
Richy will no doubt remember my roller skate wheels from the Dixie Cup - they were soooooooo slow. I use them on my first runs at any new hill so I could get a feel for the course without the pressure (and terror!) of going too fast to make the gates.
I realize this is a miniscule market and probably not worth the effort.
Maybe skaters can loan out old slow wheels that they have laying around for beginners.
I still have my super slow roller skate wheels if any newbie wants to borrow them!

Slalom manifesto! We just had the Olympics in London. Zen and the Art of Slalom Competition.
For major events - here is my wish list. Local small events are different.
Make posters, announce time of finals - put them up everywhere.
Employ PR and publicity person to contact newspapers, radio, TV etc.
Employ marketing students to get sponsorship, product and money and pay them by commission.
Have an official race committee with clearly defined responsibilities.
Limit racers to top 6 per nation, or use slalom ranking and fill vacant spots with racers down the list.
Provide food, lodging, toilets and airport/race transport, or at least get the best deals for racers.
Have a place for racers to meet every evening.
Set up ramps, timing, courses etc very early on day, before racers arrive, so racing can start on time.
Have clear timetable. Pro racing is the main event, all else as time allows.
Use proven timing systems, like ski club systems.
Set course on day of race, use 3 racers from 3 nations to set course.
Have a detailed riders meeting, explain options especially on day when it will rain.
Set pro courses, tight means tight!
Have a dedicated race starter, if racer misses start it's a DQ.
Have a dedicated Chief Cone Head in charge of Cone Heads, and write cone totals as a check.
Have 3 fixed video cameras to record each run. Put film on computer and send to racers after race.
Have a great MC on PA to inform racers and crowd of times, and to keep the party going (in English)!
Have a maximum of 2 runs practice, only if time allows, DQ riders who poach runs.
Make all qualifying combined 2 runs due to variable wind conditions.
Make GS combined time, best 2 runs added together of 3 or 4 runs.
Do GS race order based on rankings, fastest runs last.
Do final ranking on times in actual races, not qualifying to encourage fast racing.
Have computers and MC on finish line, not top of hill.
Person to write times on whiteboard. Printer to print times after each run (buy a cheap printer).
Person to hand-write times and cone penalties to double check data input mistakes.
Prize money, or formula calculation to be announced before race.
Product donated to be declared before race and given lot numbers.
Give at least Medals to top three racers.
After medal ceremony, do raffle of all product lot numbers, must be present to win, people will stick around!
That's it, That's all.

Race Insurance
Last year I used http://www.theeventhelper.com. The two day insurance was $250. This year we can get a group rate. There is one catch. We must submit all the dates before the first race. The Sizzler, if Marcos D Soulsby-Monroy is interested, is the first insurable race. I ran a sample quote, and 12 race days comes out to a total of $520. That is $44 per day. I don't quite know how to organize it, and I don't know if we can do it through ISSA, but my idea would be that anybody who wants insurance for their race could send the treasurer $50/day before March 1. Then we could buy the insurance. Jonathan Harms has alot on his plate, but he is the treasurer of ISSA, so maybe he wants to volunteer. If not, I could or someone else could, but the timing is good.
The type of insurance is called "Festival and Cultural Event-Outdoor". Is anybody preliminarily interested?

Is that so? Strange, because JBH normally tries to get the needed slalom coverage in. Maybe he just didn't make it this time.
Let's compensate in the next issue! Ideas, photos, articles and other contributions are most welcome. Anyone can help out. CW is very open to any quality contributions and we're really grateful for their support of our sport!

Re: POST ONLY REPLIES, don't use New Topic
I just read where my home town of Summerville is finally getting a skate park. It's going to be constructed on some really useless land bounded by the football stadium parking lot and a four-lane freeway. Of course, some people who live two blocks away up the street are protesting it. They don't want the undesirable element and noise coming near their houses. They live next to a high school football stadium and don't want undesirables and noise nearby.
Fortunately, the town has the fortitude to tell them to pack sand and the park construction starts next month.

Watching TV about the Boston Bombers. I don't know which dad was talking about whc son. But he spoke of how his kid was " Radikalized" and no that does not mean he races with Keith Hollien and Marc McCree...( which oddly was what I thought when I first heard the term. ) and he said that s son would go snowboarding at Blue Mountain ( I think he meant the 140 vertical drop at Blue Hills ski area in Mass) and that he was into slalom skateboarding.....anyone else hear that clip?

We recently found an even better and more affordable provider of event insurance. They are called Direct Event Insurance. Their site is http://DirectEvent.Me
When I priced out my event, these people were significantly cheaper than other sites.

It's a facebook world these days... there is an ISSA facebook group with some chatting going on.
Here are still all static info you want to keep in a more organized manner.
What happened last year? Have a look at the ranking and events for 2013 at the world ranking www.slalomranking.com

Not sure what is going on in Pakistan, but we have many people registering from Pakistan these days. All trying to do smart comments. Sorry, doesn't work here.
Why are they doing it? OK, some are obviously trying to sell stuff, but what about the rest of these fake users?

Yes, I have seen it also before. I just delete them when I see them. Probably real persons. No robots. Same for the ISSA facebook by the way. What I understand users need links to other sites to make their own site more relevant for search engines aso.Jani Soderhall wrote:Not sure what is going on in Pakistan, but we have many people registering from Pakistan these days. You've got no luck if you're a real slalomer in Pakistan, because I pretty systematcially delete all registrants from Pakistan.Hans Koraeus wrote:Yes, I have seen it also before. On FB I delete all the blond girls, if they're male (!) and part of a religious group. There's plenty of those out there on FB. I once set up a rule for the ISSA FB group to only allow those in with friends already in the group, but I usually check those with no friends in the group to see if they may actually be interested in slalom (have a slalom, longboard or skate avatar for example). A few are accepted of this category.

Re: POST ONLY REPLIES, don't use New Topic
Is there an open-source race spreadsheet that can be downloaded direct from this site?
One that is compatible with Corky's World Ranking programme?
I am aware of the Seismic spreadsheet and am very grateful for its use, however this is only available to those 'in the know.'
A generic spreadsheet in resources might also be a good tool to those new in the game and who are finding their way.
Perhaps a simplified, adaptable version of the Seismic spreadsheets could be made available, with the proviso that Seismic gets a mention for their usage?
Maybe there is one and I just cannot find it!
Thanks,
Sam

Re: POST ONLY REPLIES, don't use New Topic
Sam,
I doubt someone could make as comprehensive and full-featured spreadsheets as those of Seismic. Not sure why you would want another one.
The only "problem" is that you may NEVER EVER copy and paste within them. If you can keep your fingers away from that functionality they're usually error free.
...
The only reason to look for another spreadsheet is when you want to race in a format which is not provided for, ie:
- best of four runs
- best two out of three (or x)
JBH has played around with the spreadsheets and should have such functionality. Even better would be that we ask Dan @ Seismic to provide us with the new features we may need, and then post them up at the Resources section in the main menu. All new for the 2016 season. Any ideas on what we need, so we can get him started?

Re: POST ONLY REPLIES, don't use New Topic
Hi Jani,
My only concern is that I did not want to continually pester Dan for sheets. If I'm doing it, then there must be quite a few others who are doing similar. It just seems an unnecessary overload for Dan that detracts from the core profit-making side of his business. Whilst he is happy to provide spreadsheets, a more universal tool that is openly available via this website might be more practical for those of us running smaller races, or for those putting on outlaw events/ impromptu battles between friends.

I asked Dan last year if we could make an update for this current season and make it easily available and he was OK with that. Can't recall why we never came all the way through with it at the time. We could do it now as preparation for 2016.

I am still using the latest version of Excelmate with the versions of Dan's spreadsheets that come with it when you download it. The package works pretty much flawlessly for me. Adding the new rules into those would be cool, like the automatic DQ when jumping the start.
JBH and Steven were using what looked like a new spreadsheet this past weekend at the Worlds with the Excelmate software. But they still had a few bugs with it that needed some fixing. It also seemed to have additional features like the assignation of the ISSA points for each finish position to compute the overall rankings.

Sounds good, Mig.
What on earth is Excelmate, and where can we find a version?
Edit in reply to above:
THANKS CORKY!

Spot of Tallinn
Let's keep an eye on this action park to open soon - Will we be able to ride our slalom boards in there? Is this a dream terrain for some slalom cross races?
