Rookie of the year 2008

Post by Jani Soderhall » Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:22 am

The last ranking of 2008 is up on www.slalomranking.com.
It's the one of Dec 31:st awaiting any final corrections before becoming the official ranking of 2008. Check it out!

In the mean time we can try to figure out who are the Rookies of 2008? Here's my guesses (read from the rankings) so far:

Pro:
1. Fabian Björnstjerna, SWE
2. Peter Klock, SWE
3. Jonny Miller, USA

Am:
1.
2.
3.

Women:
1. Lucile Crozet, FRA
2. Irene Di Giorgio, ITA
3. Ilva Skaraine, LAT

Junior, boys:
1.

Junior, girls:
1. Irene DiGiorgio, ITA
2. Johana Kotková, CZE
3. Cenda BacÍk, CZE

Let's have Corky work on this asap! Please!

There's never been any Rookie awards in the Masters list, but maybe we could do it too.

The problem with the Masters list is that it only takes AM's into account, and not Pros. It's got something to do with the problem of how to compare performances of Pros vs Ams when they are not in the same list of results. Maybe it could be solved with a Masters Pro and a Masters Am category. Let's have Corky respond on that.

I think it could be him. But I wasn't so sure about it, so I didn't write it.

Corky told me he has to re-write the code to calculate the rookie's scores, so it hasn't happened yet. It requires a re-write because of the change in structure following the move.

Ok here is a small update about the Rookie Rankings. With the move of the ranking site and database of the world ranking to the ISSA server this year things have been remade at the same time. The Rookie Rankings have not been top priority but now I have made some coding for that as well.

The World Ranking calculates rookie of the year awards each season. The rookie classes used so far is: PRO, AM, Women, Junior Boys and Junior Girls.

Below are the Current Rookie Ranking rules of 2008.

<b><u>Pro – Rookie of the year:</u></b> As best placement in the "Season Ranking Men, Pro" after first season racing as Pro in a Main Status competition.
Possible special invitations for Am's to race in a Pro class during previous seasons is ok and should not affect them being in the pro rookie category later on. Only points from the first pro season will count anyway.
<b><u>Am – Rookie of the year:</u></b> As best placement in the "World Ranking Men, Am" after first season racing in a Main status competition. Juniors don't count. Women don't count.
<b><u>Woman – Rookie of the year:</u></b> As best placement in the "Season Ranking Women" after first season racing a Main status competition. Juniors don't count.
<b><u>Junior boy – Rookie of the year:</u></b> As best placement in the "World Ranking Junior Boys" after first season racing a Main status competition. Age 15-17. Girls don't count.
<b><u>Junior girl – Rookie of the year:</u></b> As best placement in the "World Ranking Junior Girls" after first season racing a Main status competition. Age 15-17.

- Major status will be counted with Main points for all classes except the Pro class.

We will soon implement the Rookie rankings along with the other existing rankings. Earlier I just calculated these towards the end of the year. From this year 2009 the Rookie rankings will be calculated alongside the normal rankings during the seasons. This might create some more interest in the future.

We have a lot of things to publish to the public ranking site that is only on our test site for now.

Here are the top five AM Rookie of the Year 2008:
1. Jordan Huotari, USA
2. Kevin Delaney, USA
3. Ricardo Damborenea, Spain
4. Bobby Thomas, USA
5. Kaj Gustavsson, Sweden

Please note that my guess in the first post above is just a guess. I only counted Pro's that did their first year slaloming directly in the Pro class. There could also be those that have run as Ams previously. Corky will make sure we get the right results!

So far, it's all pure speculation!

All the Rookie rankings are on www.slalomranking.com if someone has missed that. Hidden in the results section.

But... there are some small corrections before the final 2008 rankings can be written into the history books.

No, Oscar will not be an official Junior Rookie until he fits into the category...

Junior boy – Rookie of the year:
As best placement in the "World Ranking Junior Boys" after first season racing a Main status competition. Age 15-17.
