August is the UK time for holidays. If you are not taking time off yourself, then often as not one might be covering the workplace for someone who is and therefore you cannot get away.
Given that at least one week in August will be family oriented, it is not unreasonable to think that holiday selection for most racers will be at other points during the year in order to plan breaks that both least affect family and work and also that coincide with planned/well-spaced rest periods.
June weekends used to be packed with races. The reason? It's pretty dry compared to the rest of the year. Is there any possibility on moving an existing race to this time area?
Perhaps the bidding for race status and late planning also has an impact on the competition calendar?
Major: 4 months
Main : 3 months
Prime: 2 months
Basic: 1 month
Plain: (no time advance needed)
Thinking globally, of course it's important to consider racers from over the Pond who wish to take part in as many events as their short travel allows, but equally there must be some sort of co-ordination so that European skaters can easily paticipate on home turf.
On the other hand, a variation in participants (provided all races that are grouped together have equal status) is the life blood that competition requires.
About four years ago one could plan on taking part in one major race per month during the summer period, two if a major championship was in the offing. This allowed for practice, development, growth of rivalry and anticipation for the next event. It would be great to see something similar occur again, whilst also allowing for championships to butt up to other races in order to draw maximum global participation.
