Winter Spread . . . Not As Bad As I Had Anticipated

Post by Wesley Tucker » Mon Jan 09, 2006 3:09 pm

Good news:

I went the entire Holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Years and gained only FOUR (4) pounds. Better news is 70-degree dry temps all week heading up to Tom's outlaw in Dublin. With a little luck those four extras will be gone by Friday.

So, how did all of y'all stellar athletes fare during the festive winter banquets, pies, nibbles, parties, cakes, liquor, lard and candy canes?

The Bounty Of The Sea

Post by Wesley Tucker » Sat Feb 11, 2006 9:42 pm

I'm only posting this picture to prove to some California folks I'm not a liar (Carin and Katie, you know who you are!):

Image

I was telling them that big fat shrimp are so common around here you can buy it for a $1.00 a pound. These were caught by a friend of a friend during bait season who has 300 pounds in two chest freezers at his house. He said he needed to "unload some, so would we please, please, please take a few pounds?"

Who was I to argue?

Anyway, it's a cold, wet rainy weekend, so there's nothing really to do except eat shrimp all day. It's a hard life, but somebody's gotta do it!

You're in charge of the shrimp for The Farm next year.

Joe,

I seriously considered your suggestion, but there's a problem. Most people cast for shrimp only during "shrimp bait season," which is when you can put a gooey ball of corn meal, syrup and red clay in the water to attract the succulent little crusteaceans when they run from the marsh to the open sea.

Unfortunately, bait season doesn't start until Labor Day or somewhere around the first of September. Da' Farm is the first of August, so getting any fresh stuff really cheap is probably not going to happen. By the end of summer most folks' stash from the previous year has been decimated. Bringing them wouldn't be a real problem with an ice chest and some dry ice, but I just don't know if they'll be available.

I'll start looking around the end of July and let you know, but don't get your hopes up. Buying them commercially at Shem Creek is $5-6.00 a pound, and that's no deal. The real deals are getting if from the baiters later in the fall for $1 a pound.

Then We are Having Shrimp Dinner

Post by Robert Sydia » Tue Feb 28, 2006 6:47 pm

Well that was quickly decided.

We we all enjoy a shrimp dinner and we will not have Mike to race against the next day!!!

Very simple way of getting rid of the competition.

BRING ON THE SHRIMP

All the best,

Rob

New Slalom Skateboarder In Georgia

Post by Wesley Tucker » Thu Mar 16, 2006 9:38 pm

We got a new Jaw Ja guy signed up on SS.com

Mark Kovachi of Roswell.

I hope Ron and Marty get in touch and let Mark know about what's going on. Or, is Mark one of the guys from the skate shop (is it Woodies?) who's already clued into the Southeast slalom scene?

Hope to see you around, Mark. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the Dow Here Retreat in Winston Salem NEXT weekend. If you can't make it for the whole weekend try and make it up for the day either Saturday or Sunday. It's going to be a great two days.

Start spreadin' the news . . .

Post by Wesley Tucker » Wed Mar 22, 2006 3:39 am

The 'Cocks finished the regular season 15-14. Tonight they knocked off the Semen Holes (who beat Duke) 69-68 in overtime on the road to advance to the round of eight in the NIT. After a three-game winning run in the SEC tournament and two wins now in the NIT, the 'Cocks improve to 20-15.

That's getting a 20-win season THE HARD WAY!

It's either Cincy or the Gophers between the 'Cocks and a return to Madison Square Gardens.

'Cocks 65, Cincy 'Cats 62

Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York.
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps

These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it

Back to Madison Square Gardens. Life is sweet.

National Invitational Tournament Champions:

'Cocks - 76, Michigan - 64

First team since St. John's in 1944 to repeat at the NIT.

I've already harrassed Fadell sufficiently, so that just leaves Bara.

I know, some would argue that Carolina is now #66, but that's a distortion of reality. The 'Cocks won 9 of their last 10, beat FSU, Cincinnati, Louisville and Michigan all on the road, beat Final Four Florida 2 of 3 during the season and was a heartbeat away from taking the SEC Tournament after dousing Tennessee and Kentucky.

January really sucked but February and March made up for it.

More Basketball

Post by Wesley Tucker » Tue Apr 04, 2006 5:34 am

Well, I have no qualms saying this out loud: "How 'bout that SEC team winning the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship?"

I just can't bring myself to say more than that.

NCAA and NIT Championships. This was supposed to be an off year for the nation's premiere sports conference.

And I have to be circumspect and NOT EVEN mention this week's NCAA Baseball polls. Whoa, huzza.

I didn't go to the Buckeye this weekend because the Blue Angels were in town. I sessioned Sunday down in Dublin with the King Of Georgia and he said he wanted to see some good airplane pics. I hope these suffice.

Image
The local paper estimated the crowd at around 200,000. I believe it.

Image
The Air Force, Army and Navy had just about one of everything on display

Image

Image
A little South Carolina "jingoism" is appropriate. It's always neat to see one on the news delivering its payload somewhere around the world.

Image
A flyover of a F-86 from the Korean War, an A-10 from the '70s and an F-16 sybolized 50 years of air power.

Image
The F-86 was pretty cool. Funny though how it's "low thrust" engine was so quiet compared to the more modern fighters.

Image
A B-25 also gave a flight demonstration. This is type of plane Jimmy Dooolittle and his raiders used to take it to Tokyo in 1942.

Image
Of course, some of the planes you could look at from a distance, but not touch. This is the B-1B Bomber.

Image
It was neat getting right up to the Army's Apache tank killer.

Image
Ever since I was a kid and the first squadron of C-5 Galaxies were stationed at Charleston, I've been a fan of the Aluminum Overcast.

Image
It's hard to believe this thing swallows a tank, goes up to 35,000 feet and flies at 600 miles an hour!

And finally, The United States Navy's Air Demonstration Team - The Blue Angels:

Image
First is the walk out and mounting up for taking off.

Just as the Blue Angels landed, the rains came and most everyone headed out. At the main gate of the air base is a static display of a C-124 Globemaster from the 1940s, a C-141 that was just recently retired by the USAF and this C-54 Constellation. It looks like a decent place to get in out of the weather!

This is the BEST time of the year!

Post by Wesley Tucker » Sun Sep 03, 2006 10:08 pm

Last week Summerville High School beat Berkeley 35-7.
This week it was 52-13 over James Island.

What did Coach John McKissick have to say about the season so far?

"We've still got a ways to go," McKissick said. "I know Wando will be ready for us next week. We've got to get better."

Now, in two games the team is 87-20 over the opposition and the coach says they need to get better. What's his amibition? Every game a 112-0 shutout? (112 resulting from four touchdowns every quarter.)

I do love this time of year.

The Summerville Green Wave has just found ANOTHER WAY TO WIN!

Tomorrow we play the Wando Warriors of Wando High School in Mount Pleasant. Yesterday SEVEN (7) starters for the Warriors were arrested for participating in several armed robberies over the weekend. Included in the haul was a 2002 BMW. The accused include the starting quarterback (grandson of the former county Sheriff,) linebacker, receivers, O Linemen and D-back.

When you consider there are 24 starters and a third are suspended, there's cause for hope with the 2-0 Summerville team against the 2-0 Warriors. Of course, the drawback is that no matter what happens Summerville can't win: if they score more points they were supposed to and if they don't then they lost to a team decimated by stupidity.

Oh, well, Someone has to be 3-0 and someone has to be 2-1. I'd rather it be us than them!

Well, it's 5:40 PM September 12 and I did something phenomenal just a few minutes ago: I turned off the air conditioner!

Although I turn off the air when I leave for the weekend, for the first time since May the outside air is decent enough that I don't need 2000 KWs and 20,000 BTU just to survive.

Since I'm probably the only reader that pays any attention to your high school football rants Wesley, I'll take a moment and brag about the Dublin High Irish.

This season:
Week 1 - Dublin 52 West Laurens 7
Week 2 - Dublin 40 Twiggs County 0
Week 3 - Dublin 42 Washington County 0 (in the 4th quarter)

Last year Dublin only allowed 3 points all (regular)season then lost in the semi-finals of the state playoffs????? I wouldn't count on that happening again....

Football, you bet....

Ga. Tom,

Summerville 42
Orangeburg Wilkinson 19

4-0

Oh, in the Probate Bowl last week, da' Ville SQUEAKED by the a 12-7 win. Sure enough, every news story was how Wando ALMOST beat the Wave with all their starters suspended. Oh, well. Like I said, one is now 4-0 and the other is 1-3. Who's da' winner here?

I guess in December we're just going to have to insist Summerville and Dublin play in a neutral stadium just to settle this thing, huh?

P.S. Hey, the weather in La Costa is here, wish you were beautiful!

Correct.

Lest anyone forgets,

Today is "Hugo Day." It's been 17 years. Oh, what a night that was!

It's safe to say that things around here are a-l-m-o-s-t back to normal. The tree canopy has recovered well and there are very few remaining signs of the storm. One constant reminder is a shrimp trawler that's STILL imbedded in the road shoulder heading out to Folly Beach.

When the red flag goes up, though, people around here do seem to pay more attention to it than they did when I was a kid. Things do change and will probably be that way for a long time to come.

AA Dublin 24
AAA Stephens County 14

4-0 !

Stephens Co. WAS ranked in the top 5 AAA state rankings and hadn't been held to under 20 points since their first game last year, and averaged 30+ points a game. Dubs is rolling!

Ga schools are split into 5 classifications: A - AAAAA. (A - fewest students, AAAAA - most students). Each classification has it's own set of state rankings. Unfortunately, the only time schools from different classifications play each other is during the regular season.

Same here. Although I'm certain the number of schools in SC is far less than in a state the size of Jaw Ja. There's probably more high school students within 20 miles of Atlanta than in this whole state.

7-0

The Wave scored on SIX rushing touchdowns. Three drives of over 70 yards were completely on the ground. Why bother putting it in the air if the infantry advances unopposed?

Yeah, we gave up a touchdown LATE. It's good, though, that everybody got to play. Coach was even on the sideline yelling, "where's the King Of Georgia? We need a linebacker!"

Ya' missed your chance at the big time!

Well, a Carolina football player was thrown off the team this week. He was a red-shirt freshman who had seen no playing time this year, so it's not like things are going to collapse with his absence.

The kid was charged with assault, criminal mischief and possibly kidnapping. Seems he got too aggressive with a girl and when she said, "no," he said, "oh, yes you will!" He held her against the wall and wouldn't let her go.

Here's the funny part. The Athletic Department announced he was released for "violating team rules." Now, is it just me, but if you got a thug who is charged with several felonies isn't deciding he broke "team rules" just a bit redundant?

Tom,

I've figgered out that since you and I are the only ones going on about this then everybody else's home town teams must suck out loud?

Just an observation.

P.S. The Wave moved up to #16 in the USA TODAY nationwide HS football ranking. #1 is still Byrnes up in Spartanburg. That reflects pretty well on a such a small state as South Carolina.

Yeah. That's why the Southwest Conference was such a big hit.

Summerville had to make THREE 2-point conversions to stay ahead at the Eagles' home field. Beaufort had the ball all the way down to da' 'Ville's 39 yard with a 4th and 6 and 1:02 remaining. The pass was in the receiver's numbers . . . and he dropped the ball. The Green Wave took over on downs and ran out the clock.

The Wave's offense rolled racking up 43 points and 286 yards rushing. The defense, though, gave up a season high 36. This is NOT a good thing.

8-0.

I swear this is not a joke:

http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/ne ... 772684.htm

Klempsun University reserarchers have discovered the following:

"Drivers see more poorly at night and pedestrians overestimate how visible they are to motorists, according to a Clemson University researcher who has been studying night driving for 20 years.”

Well, duh. I wonder how much grant money the Orange Menace got to figure that out?

Another good football story:

I suppose everyone has heard about the huge brawl at the Miami-FIU game this past Saturday? It was a real riot on the field with guys in cleats kicking each other in the face, guys using their helmets as club on heads, punching, 2-on-1 beats downs and just mass confusion. Many, many players on both teams have been suspended and several were expelled from school for the incident. Even the Miami radio announcer was fired for going on about how happy was to see his team excited about not letting a visitor get away with something.

Well, Saturday night happened to be the Miami-Dade Police Department's big "Join a Team-Not a Gang" program at the football game. 700 at-risks youths were brought to the game to experience true sportsmanship and an alternative to gang violence:

I swear I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried!

Homecoming. Play a patsy.

Summerville - 41
Battery Creek - 14

9-0.

Oh, the number 2 team in the country, Byrnes near Spartanburg, lost to Gaffney Thursday night on regional TV. So there's a good chance da' 'Ville will rise from it's current #16 in the country on the USA Today poll. Just have to wait til Monday to see. The Wave was #3 in the state behind those two. Definetely rise to #2 in the state rankings.
