It says at slalomrankings.com that points are only updated at beginning of the month so points from April races won't be added until May. And they would only be a factor if you used the 2005 Season Rankings which try to update/merge last year's points with this year's points. Even a big change in 2005 points will barely move a 4-yr ranking value.

Maybe I am just confused... Hopefully Hans will chime in...

Here's text from rules section at slalomranking.com
Season rankings (1Y)
A yearly ranking only counting results from one specific season. Season is Jan 1 to Dec 31.

4-year rankings (4Y)
Counting results from the last 4 seasons. The three best seasons are added together with the third best season only counting 50%. The worst season of the four last does not count. Having one year that does not count in the last 4-year period solves the greater part of the problems when getting a season spoiled because of injury or other private matters (studies, work, having a child, health issues a.s.o.).

Season rank calculations:

During different periods during the year the number of best discipline results counted for the current season are different. In the beginning it is lower and then increases until the end of the year when the full 8/6 best results count.

There will be fixed dates during the year when rankings are calculated. This will be done at the end of each month. There are three exceptions: January, February and November.

In the calendar you can see the official dates for all the World Ranking calculations during the season. You can also see how many of the best discipline results for the current season that are counted into the rankings at that time.

For example:
- In the World Ranking, March 31, only the 2 best discipline results for the current season will count in the rankings calculated.
- In the World Ranking, April 30, the 3 best results will count in the pro rankings and the 2 best discipline results in the other rankings.

Great...that means more of you who seemed to think Jason only won the Super G at worlds because of the wind, can now come take another lump as he , Barker and Fluitt smoke you on their home hill, and move you further down the Athens bracket...
(Actually, none of these guys have ridden Water Valley since before worlds)

I see that you are trying to dive into the world ranking rules. So what's next? Rocket sience? ;-) The rules behind the World Ranking are something that have evolved during a long time and it's hard to grasp it all the first time around. It's just too much. You have to kind of take it on bit by bit.

But let's start of with some points that might clear things up.

1.
If you want to use the World Rankings to set up the brackets for Red Clay Cup then it is the current March 31 rankings that you should use. Next calculation is April 30 and that is too late.

2.
Chris is right that some pro racers might suffer in the Pro Men World Ranking. For example if 2005 is your first Pro season. And even a little with only one pro season under your belt. But with the new virtual year point system these problems are actually minimized.

But, we must not forget that using the World Rankings for building up brackets like Rick proposes is not the ideal solution. The ideal solution is of course running normal qualifications. But Ricks idea is good in situations where you want to run a head to head race with a very limited time schedule.

3.
I'd like to be able to click on any number on the rankings site and have it be able to show me how that number is calculated, eliminating the mystery. Originally there was a big chart that showed which points you picked up at which events. That helped.
This will happen. We have not had time to implement this function yet though. But I can do it manually for those who want to know.

4.
The current World Ranking point system is made to produce a certain stability. But big steps can be taken in the ranking by Rookies and for Pros during their first seasons.

5.
Each of the World Rankings point to one of the existing Season or 4-year rankings. This depending on what is the most appropriate for the specific class. For amateur and junior classes where many top racers are likely to move up a class during a 4 year period it makes more sense for the world ranking to use the season rankings. For the other classes where top racers are likely to stay for many years the more long-term 4-Year rankings seems to make more sense.

World rankings
Here are the official World Ranking classes and their under laying ranking in parentheses.
- World ranking, Men Pro (4-Year ranking, Men Pro)
- World ranking, Men Am (Season ranking, Men Am)
- World ranking, Women (4-Year ranking, Women Total)
- World ranking, Boys (Season ranking, Men Juniors -17)
- World ranking, Girls (Season ranking, Women Juniors -17)

6.
My personal thoughts and nothing to do with the World Ranking.
- In the elite class I think only "Pros" should enter. If not enough pros to fill up the 16 places the better racers will jump over the first round. They will probably have enough runs anyway.
- The Open class should have only "no-Pros". If not filling up evenly to 16 or 32 then let the better racers skip the first round as above for the pros. For example if 17 open riders then only 16 and 17 runs first round.

Noah is gnar and will be battling it out for 2nd or 3rd in the GS. The guy has got some talent and the "eye of the Tiger" race day. You cant' train for the eye. He'll pull it out like he always does. Thats what he does.

Having a kid made me faster, and I am sure the same thing happened to Noah. He's no. 2 in my book.

Start Ramps or Push Start?

Post by Michael Dong » Tue Apr 12, 2005 8:31 am

Hi 66,

Will start ramps be used or will it be push starts? Any chance of getting a pic of the start ramps? If no ramps, how much of a push do we get?

Psyched for my first Red Clay,

Michael

Friday, Giant Slalom - limited push start.....you have to be careful, if you push in too hard you will blow out (1 cone DQ)

Saturday, Slalom - ramp start

pre-Byrd style ramps of my own design...some people find them a bit sketchy....Mandarino finds them made out of balsa wood

I predict Pirnack will break those ramps before the day has finished. Screech thinks it's necessary to pop a wheelie on his way out of the gate.

Hey Rick,

Started thinking about the fees and read a bunch of the old postings here. Luckily I found where to send it. Sorry it's later than sooner, consider it a newbie mistake.

It was nice to see Mollica will be there. Anybody willing to post a naked picture has got to be up for a cold one or six on Saturday night.....

Oh by the way, I can't make Luna but I am heading to Trade Street on Sunday about 3. Anybody care to join me? Just show up and go fast. See ya Sunday....

Trade Street at 3:00? I might be there, but don't hold your breath. It depends on two things:

• what time I wake up Sunday in Jackson
• what time I'm passing through Jaw Ja Sunday afternoon.

If I'm there, I'll see 'ya then.

Hey,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you guys on alt routes to Athens. There is a route out 20 to Highway 441 up to Athens. I showed this to my wife, whom is a Georgia native, and she said it's long...long...long....

Best bet is to follow Rick's lead and head out 85 to 316. Just go fast when you can and remember not to flip off the old ladies sportin the stars and bars bumper stickers. If they are like most Georgians they are armed to the teeth. Yee-Haw.....

66,

Very nice having pics of the GS course. Do you have a similar course description for the dual slalom event? Is it tight? Number of cones, spacing... How about cone penalties? 0.1, 0.2, 10sec?

thanks,

Michael

Doing some last minute negotiating with local government officials and Twilight representatives in an attempt to gain more hill and more time.

In keeping with ISSA rules, in past years I have chosen 3 visiting racers to set the course. Look for something not too difficult, but with either a .2 or .3 cone penalty.

On a related note, Elite Racers will be racing first on Saturday. Practice begins at 11:30 am, racing at 12:00 noon. Elite racers will be bracketed according to World Rankings found at http://www.slalomranking.com. Open racing begins upon completion of the Elite bracket, followed by Womens & Juniors.

Registration will close Wednesday, April 27th at 5:00pm Eastern Standard Time. If I have not received your registration fee via Paypal or U.S. Mail by this time, don't bother coming.

Elite racers must provide "schwag" (equipment, clothing, nude pictures of slalom celebrities) for the Open racers in order to be eligible for prize money. (Prize money of $1000 per race Elite based on 50 registered racers, $100 Open, Women & Junior Boy/Girls per race)

Here's a map getting you from the Atlanta Airport to the Athens slalom venues - http://www.68mm.com/beatrice/redclaymap05.JPG (may need to cut and paste into your browser as the "beatrice" directory does not allow direct linking).

Questions, comments, concerns? Post here.

66 - Which ranking? 2005 Season (which is mostly 2004), 2004 Season, or 4-yr combined? Either way that sucks, but let us know. Can you publish the brackets now for everyone to see? Will any B sandbaggers step up into Elite? Depending on which ranking, you, Harms, Claude, and maybe a few others would round out the 16, but will you do it or will you take your rankings and sit at the top of B? Sounds like it works good for you. Sucks for me.

Either way, that's a shame. The biggest race and the most points on the East Coast and we can't even qualify one run.

OK, now I'm confused. I thought we only had the hill for a few hours, and then only in the evening. Wutup widdat?

As for schwag...does last year's "sword" photo with Aki's bare ass in it count?

Still working on acquiring additional time and hill.

4 year combined ranking

Brackets will be published 5pm Wednesday, April 26th.

The decision to run a bracket of 16 or two brackets of 8 Elite racers will also be made by then.

I think it will have less of an impact on points than you are imaging.

Qualifying is boring, racing is exciting. If I, as a promoter, can't put on an event that will draw sponsorship, this will be the last Red Clay Cup. Four years of dumping money into the black hole called skateboard racing has taken it's toll. I'm no McCree. This (Twilight) is a big oppportunity for skateboard racing, they've been running a succesful bike race for 25 years. I expect everyone to bring their A-game to town.

Barker you're not even registered. The Contest Calendar on NCDSA is not the official registration, I've posted the names of those who have registered in this thread.

Don't forget the schwag.

I did get them all on Slalom Boards this morning running cones though.

C'mon Barker register, EH! Gimmie a break!

I'm glad Ive been doing for a while now what Kenny has decided to do from now on.

I have a question.

What if someone were to "slip and fall" or have an "equipment malfunction" before the race?

Would the next Open racer be able to slide into the "Elite" class?

Just asking.

I just hope he doesn't mean "Wardrobe Malfunction." We don't have any Justin's or Janet's registered do we?

Less than a week to go to Athens and it's been a cold winter so none of us up here have gotten a whole lot of practive since fall

But it was pretty warm this week so we figured we would get a good session in Sunday to get loosened up.

Forecast this weekend?....high in the mid 30's and 6" of snow....it's coming down pretty hard already...

I've got to get out of Detroit

Please tell me the weather's been good in Georgia.....

Welllll Chris.....

We have had the southern version of snow.....RAIN! The big bike race rolling across Georgia endured hard rain and hail yesterday....Thank god fer helmets. Thursday here calls for a bit of rain but Friday & Saturday are sounding good. Hopefully it'll rebound and be in the mid 70's like we had last week. I am heading to Trade Street tomorrow at 1pm for a practice sesh on the big bomber.

Oh and if anyone has allergies, bring your meds. Georgia is the pollen capitol of the known world.

Athens Count Down

Post by Maria Carrasco » Sun Apr 24, 2005 11:04 pm

Hello everyone -- just checking in to see the latest news on the first major event of the season! It's getting close now for sure. Looking forward to seeing all of you -- old and new friends alike.

Since I've been asked by several people to bring race gear from our SK8KINGS store -- I thought I would let you all know I will be doing just that. Can't bring the whole store of course but I am bringing Manx Wheels, Khiro Riser and Bushing Kits, Oust Bearings and probably some shirts and DVD's too. I will also have some of our brand new Crown Jewel Freestyle Wheels since they are arriving Monday for anyone interested. Probably will have an AXE or two on hand if space permits. If you want something specific -- please let me know and I'll do my best to bring it. ;) We'll be arriving with the sun early Friday morn.

Practice safe and see you all soon!

update 4/25/5

Post by Rick Stanziale » Mon Apr 25, 2005 2:47 pm

Here's a handy map for driving over from the Atlanta Airport

http://www.68mm.com/beatrice/redclaymap05.JPG

When you leave the airport, take Interstate 85 North for approximately 30 miles

Veer right at Exit 106 - Georgia Highway 316

Another 30 miles and you'll see the Athens exit (Highway 78) - DO NOT TAKE THIS EXIT

If you're heading straight to Trade Street, continue another mile or so to the intersection of 316 & Jimmy Daniel Road (there is a light at this intersection, but if you aren't paying attention you will miss it!). Turn left onto Jimmy Daniel Road and continue until you reach the intersection of Jimmy Daniel & State Highway 78/Atlanta Highway. Continue through the light and Jimmy Daniel becomes Trade Street. Follow this for 1/2 mile, turn right and park. You are now in the Giant Slalom runout.

Heading to Game Day Condos from the airport? Do not exit 316. Continue past the Athens exit, past Jimmy Daniels Road, past Home Depot, 316 merges with Highway 78/Atlanta Highway. First landmark will be the Hampton Inn on your left at Alps Road. Followed by the Varsity on your left at Milledge Avenue. When you pass the Varsity, Game Day will be the closest big building you can see downtown. You'll go downhill, then uphill towards town, stay in the left lane and when you see Game Day Condos, turn left into their parking lot.

If you are staying at Team Clay World Headquarters (you know who you are), proceed as if you were heading to Game Day. Turn left at the Varsity on to Milledge Avenue. Turn left when Milledge dead ends (Dunkin Donuts on the right) at Prince Avenue. First traffic light is Chase Street, turn right. Next traffic light is Boulevard, turn left. 2nd right is Hiawassee, turn right, World Headquarters is 465, last house on the left.

Trade Street is safe to skate all day long, the course is marked in red.

Friday - Giant Slalom Jam format begins promptly at 5pm and ends at dark (organizers discretion). Racers will run the course in order of paid entry (as seen on SlalomSkateboarder.com). Single lane, best time wins.

Rendezvous at Game Day for a tour of downtown by yours truly.

Saturday - Slalom practice begins at 11:30 am on Washington Street. Dual lane bracket racing, no qualifying, brackets set by order of 4 year World Ranking at SlalomRanking.com.

ELITE CLASS RACING BEGINS PROMPTLY AT NOON!

Followed by Open, Women & Juniors.

Bracket racing will determine division winners, however World Ranking points will be distributed according to fastest time. So it is possible for someone who doesn't make the cut to the Elite bracket to still walk away with the most points. Make sense? Questions? Concerns? I don't want to hear it.

Awards Ceremony following Junior racing on the hill at 4:45 pm, road must be cleared by 5pm, bike racing begins immediately.

After party at World Headquarters all night Saturday.

Sunday - 1st ever Georgia Old School Skate Jam at the Skate Park of Athens, 8am - ???

There are still 7 people who have signed up on the NCDSA Contest Calendar who have not paid their entry fees, I will not accept entry fees after Wednesday, 5pm.

Call me if you need anything - seven oh six, three three eight, three three oh four

six

Manx Big Boys

Post by Maria Carrasco » Mon Apr 25, 2005 3:35 pm

Christopher -- The new Manx are not really "out" yet but I'm trying to get a supply this week. If so I will bring some for sure.

Rick -- Sounds like you have things finely tuned for this event. Thanks again for all the hard work you have done to pull this off. PS -- We are bringing a "racy" little number for the open prize pool from one of Richy's main sponsors . . . ;)

Looking forward!

six,

Is the practice Saturday at 11:30 for all of the racers or just the elite? 50+ racers and thirty minutes? Now that's what I call a jam session!

Yes. Be there, have your pads on, and be listening for your name over the PA.

The goal here is to provide a product that is more palatable to potential sponsors and spectators. Friday night is a good old fashioned grass roots jam on a deserted stretch of back road, Saturday is non stop skateboarding racing.
