I'm possible for that week too.....to be honest though, it really was nice outside with the city skyline behind us and the sun overhead....not so sure you're going to get the same feel in a garage...
People have been writing for ages how much they would like to see an event in a city, as opposed to out on the outskirts....you guys pulled that off in a small, but grand style last weekend.

got the hill

Post by Chris Favero » Thu Jul 01, 2004 3:18 pm

got the hill.virtually the same location, this is twice as long twice as steep and makes a huge "s".we are thinking like a dual giant hybrid to run head to head .you cannot see the bottom from the top.we were runnin 25 mph just cruising it,so i am sure racing will be at least 30 mph.we will set cones sat a.m. and then post pics.so,it is on and will get all details in the next few days.maybe we could start a midwest series with the finals in st louis in sept?.cf

Post by Chris Favero » Sat Jul 03, 2004 10:21 pm

it is for sure on.we rode the hill and set a course this a.m..it will be a hybrid on an "s" shaped hill about 550 feet long.now,it it turns left then right,so how about some course suggestions.i think the bottom third should be tighter and straighter with the top and middle spread out.i will post full details on monday as for time schedule, but the date is solid,7/24 and we want to run head to head again.cf

cf,

Can you discribe the surface for me? I'm assuming it's the same concrete as in the video of the last race.

Any "drainage crown" or side-pitch to the sidewalk? that would make for offcamber gates through the s-curves? At 30 mph that could become rather "touchy feel-ly"
I'm really looking forward to this as it will be the fastest I've cut cones thus far...I'm slowly working up to speed out here in the Stephenson county hills.

Hopefully my wife will be making the trip with me, you know, to sign me into the emergency room if need be. :-)

Anyways if you need us to bring anything, let me know!

chris ,both those offers sound great.as far as chi costa goes,i am now thinking hybrid on hill "c" which has no foot traffic, run head to head,40 or 50 cones and then run a g/s,jam format on hill "c" for like 45 minutes to an hour at twilight.the tall buildings lit up around us ant it has street lights.my concern with hill "c" for dual is it is not wide enough and with the traffic combined with the level of committment,we need primo spotters, not one,but two on any given run.and ultimately,it is a great g/s hill.sound cool?cf

Sounds good to me!....with more skaters, i agree we will need more conheads...i hate "re-runs" for misplaced cones, it causes the day to drag out too much....We ended up at the Chicago Hilton for that day...figured whats the difference between "expensive" and "more expensive"....
I dont know how we're going to do Hybrid with wide offsets on that walkway, but i'm sure when we take a look, it could be done......i'd guess that path to be about, what 8' wide? Maybe a bit more in some spots....that will make for smaller offsets....and a fast fast course..

What time of the day are you looking at. I may be able to make a red eye run over to Chi for the day to run some cones and run back. (Gotta work on the wife and minimize cost, just got back from oregon on a pricey skate trip)

If you run races around noon then I can run over early morning and race and get back home by Midnight.

orrrrrr........you could drive down with Scott, Greg and i and spilt the hotel cost 4 ways...the hilton is booked, so we're back at the Congress Plaza....4 ways including parking would probably only be 50.00 a person....lemme know bro.... This is uncommonly fast pavement, offsets, not too much of a grade....you're style of a course

problem is I am out of town Wednesday Thursday and possibly Friday. So to get out of town to Chi town for both Saturday and Sunday is very sketchy.

That course is making me drool! Maybe I'll just dissappear for a couple of days and blame it on amnesia. Easier to ask forgiveness than permission right?

I'll work on it next week and see if the home climate permits me to make the drive.

Damn, everything just fell into place. My trip got cancelled for this week, the daughter wants to go to the museums and aquarium and the wife wants to hit the Casino at night.

I will be over that morning and staying at either Trumps in Gary or Harrah's in Joliet. Any recomendations?

Make sure AAA gives you the best or fastest route, not the shortest route...or else they'll take you in thru the south side....and that sucked..take the skyway to congress
We parked by Shedds last time, i think it was 15.00 for the day. Hotels there usually have 25.00/day parking, but you can come and go. Make sure to check with your hotel....many hotels are already booked this weekend, so you may end up staying several blocks away if you dont already have one reserved

I am staying down at Trump Casino in Gary for the night. $69 on a Saturday night and the ability to loose much more!

Close to Whiting as well.

Plan is to drop the wife and daughter off at Museum of S & I about 10am head over to find the course go fetch them around 1 to move them over to the Museum complex and let them go there for the rest of the day and when those close down they will come back to the race course to watch the rest.

Is the skyway still under construction? will it take me two hours from Gary like it did last summer?

Here are links to the video of the finals run and the 3rd and 4th place runs

Hell of a day skating and can't wait to do it again!!!

http://stillboardin.com/video/chitownfinals.wmv Todd Oles vs Greg Fadell with Todd Oles finishing 1st

http://stillboardin.com/video/chitownconsolation.wmv Scott O'Brien vs Alan Sidlo with Scott O'Brien taking 3rd place

Order was

1. Todd Oles
2. Greg Fadell
3. Scott O'Brien

The 5 hour drive from Detroit was well worth the day skating and hanging out with everyone. Perfect day in Chicago, not to hot and not to cold.

Now everyone else must post their pictures!!!

Good time in Chi-town again...what a town aye?.....I was kinda down on myself for not being more revved at race time, but now that i saw those two vids, i doubt it would have made a difference!....i thought it was cool that the top 3 qualifiers got the top 3 positions in order...no sandbagging at this race....Todd Oles is fast fast, Greg gets something from the inside i cant explain and Scott must get blasts of nervous energy because he really picks up crazy speed when he's head to head. Scott Ward, that's the fastest i've seen you go yet....Rinaldi, you pumped your ass off bro!...Chi-Town guys, you know your good, no need for me to add to that...Eric, you too...practicing with the DCers cant hurt, aye?...good luck in Colorado.
Lessons i learned: Stay focused and pump way harder
and
Just because the bars are open all night doesnt mean you have to STAY there all night.....My head felt like it got hit by a sledgehammer Sunday morning.
and
people in Chicago party....and drink...and party...and drink.
and
Chicago cops may be the coolest cops on earth
and
Anybody who's missing these Chitown events is missing the beginnings of something that's going to be carrying on and getting bigger for years. I have to imagine any big time traditional race got it's starts much like this one has
and
I'll post pics as soon as i figure how

E-mail them to me and I will post them off my website.

If anyone needs to do that please feel free to send them to me. I will load them on the web and then post them up.

Don't worry about file size, cause as my wife tells me, size doesn't matter.

It's a pity this event didn't make it into the contest calendar. I suggest we add it now although it's already passed. Like that the contest calendar will be a better documentation of events in 2004. OK?

If you publish the complete results they could be included in the World Ranking. Could make a difference for those of you that don't go to all the races in a year. Ever race counts.

After this past Saturday's racing in the shadows of the Chicago skyline I've come to the conclusion that... working sucks...

cf, cnova and mr. sidlo, thanks for the stellar hospitality!! What's that they say on the Bob@Tom show.....? Yup, You Guys ROCK!

cf, I owe you some "anytime minutes" thanks for gettin me to the church on time!!

Kill City Racing, Whoa! I'm glad I stumbled into town with the right setup
cuz one of these burly bad boys woulda stuffed my skinny A in a cab back to Podunkville if I'd of got it wrong... Seriously, these guys are a "Crew"

Scott Ward, Way cool for putting up the swag for the kids

Chris B thanks for getting this Midwest forum going
It's great to put faces to the names that keep me stoked on this sport.

Wow, sounds like you all had one heck of a race. I regret very much having missed it. My slalom skate buddy was doin OT at the airline. So I wiffed and sleep in Sat. I surfed late Fri. Warm water and a waist to chest high swell. I couldnt miss that and keep my sanity. I havent traveled to the coast since our baby boy was born. So waves and air above freezing cant be missed.
Tod sounds like all the practice has paid off. I hope you skated your Roe S Camber.
We will make the next Chicago Underground race.
Im stoked for all you guys. I'll be down in the city for the Pixies show and the Devo show. If any Chi. skaters are also attending those shows drop me a line and we can meet up for a beer.
