[2008] Calgary Grass Roots Outlaw, June 21-22

Post by Chris Iversen » Fri May 30, 2008 6:56 am

June 21- 22, 2008
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Entry Fee $20 for both days (all proceeds go toward the purchase of a Trackmate Timing System)
TS, HS, GS, Banked Slalom (skatepark)

General Info:
This is an Outlaw and VERY GRASS ROOTS event. Timing will be measured without a proper timing system. Instead, we will be using a hand held stopwatch where time will be activated by the starter saying “go” over a two way radio and stopped as the racer crosses a false tape switch and the timer stops the watch when he hears the racer’s wheels hit the “switch.” In order to allow for human error, if there is less than a ½ second difference between top 3 finishers’ times, then they will have the opportunity to have a race off. If times are that close again, ranking will be by fastest time. Please be aware of this before you sign up, so you don’t get choked at us when you arrive and discover our low-tech timing system. The proceeds from entry fees for these races go toward a proper Trackmate timer.

Tentative Race Schedule:
We are hoping to run 4 events: Tight Slalom, Hybrid slalom, Giant slalom and Banked slalom (skatepark) events over the two days. All events will be single-lane jam format. The number of runs will depend on how many racers are entered. We will decide race day whether or not it will be the sum of all run times, or best time for each event.

SATURDAY will be Hybrid slalom and Giant slalom at “Conehenge.” A long, moderately steep, single lane access road. The Hybrid event will be from about ½ way up the hill and be approximately 40-50 cones. The GS will be from the top of the hill and be 30-40 cones long. Practice begins at 9:00 am, racing starts at around 10:00 am for the Hybrid. GS will be after the Hybrid with about 2 hours in between for lunch and practice.

SUNDAY”S (tentative) banked slalom event will begin at 9:00 am for practice at Shaw Millennium Park in Calgary. Home of the famous 30 ft full pipe. We are not sure of the amount of cones and the format yet, but we will figure it out. There may be opportunity for a bowl jam afterward. Tight slalom will be held at Conehenge, with practice starting around 1:00 pm and racing to start at 2:00 pm. If the banked slalom doesn’t go, then TS will begin at Conhenge at 9:00 am. We will know in advance and post the changes (if any) here.

Directions:
Conehenge: From Calgary head north on Hwy 2 (Deerfoot Trail) to the Beddington Trail exit (Hwy 2 intersects with Highway 1 on the east side of the city). Take the off ramp (to the right) and find yourself crossing over Hwy 2 (you will see the course on the hill to your right). At the first set of lights, turn right into the parking lot for Nose Creek Park. The access road is gated, so you must walk in from the parking lot.

Millennium Park is in the Downtown Core of Calgary. From Hwy 1 (16th Ave.) head south on 14th St. NW. Cross over the bridge over the Bow River into downtown (you will see the full pipe on your left as you cross the bridge. After the Bridge, take the 9th Ave SW exit and then head east on 9th Ave. The skatepark will be on your left. Turn left on to 11th Ave. NW. Pay parking is at the Telus World of Science. There is other parking available that is free, but it can be hard to find. A local can point you in the right direction if need be

Prizes:
Basically… Bragging rights! Home-made trophies will be awarded to the top 3 finishers. There might be some swag available to top finishers if we are able to acquire it.

This event will be geared toward racers relatively new to slalom, but will still be a fun event for more experienced racers. Come on up and have some fun with us!

Thanks Martin. Looks to be a small field of competitors, but that's ok!

That being said.... We will probably make this a one day event on the Saturday, starting with park slalom at 9:00 am, then moving to Conehenge (slalom venue) at 12:00 for the TS, HS, and GS. Check the ncdsa calendar for updates this week.

Here are the updates:

*UPDATED* Race Schedule:
We are hoping to run 4 events: Tight Slalom, Hybrid slalom, Giant slalom and Banked slalom (skatepark) events on the same day. All events will be single-lane jam format. The number of runs will depend on how many racers are entered. We will decide race day whether or not it will be the sum of all run times, or best time for each event.

SATURDAY will begin with the park slalom at Millennium Skatepark, home of the famous 30 ft full pipe. We will start at 9:00 am, have the race, then head over to Conehenge for 12:00. All slalom events will begin at Conehenge starting after some time is given for practice. “Conehenge” is a long, moderately steep, single lane access road. The Hybrid event will be from about ½ way up the hill and be approximately 40-50 cones. The TS will be 40-50 cones "s-curve' style near the bottom of the hill. The GS will be from the top of the hill and be 30-40 cones long. Practice begins after we get there and set up the first course, racing starts at around 12:00 noon for the Hybrid. TS will be after the Hybrid with about 1 hour in between for practice. GS will be after that to allow for any needed equipment changes. The order of events may change on race day, depending on what everyone feels like doing.
