Antrim Can/Am Sept. 18, 19 & 20, 2009
Hi, Antrim Can/Am Skaters:
Let me be the first to welcome you back to Antrim for the 2009 Antrim Can/Am Slalom Championships! http://www.slalomskateboard.com
My race committee met last Monday for the first time, and we're getting our plans together.
EARLY CHANGES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT:
o We're opening registration on July 1 and closing it when we reach 60 paid skaters. At that point we will put you on a wait list. You may cancel up to September 1, after which you lose your money. Sorry to have to do that, but we had too many bail last year and lost money on housing. And I got my weenie whacked.
o Registration will be handled on Active.com, a sports event registration site, not NCDSA. Will post the link as soon as it's active.
o Registration will ask you for your housing preferences and whether you want to find your own.
o Cost is $75.00, which as of this writing will include:
Meals ticket for:
Friday pizza party (family @$5.00 a head)
Saturday breakfast at the First Presbyterian Church
Saturday lunch on the hill by the Antrim Baptist Church
Saturday BBQ dinner at Tenney Farm
Sunday continental breakfast on the top of the hill
Free Camping:
At Seven Maples, same as last year. Five miles from Antrim, however, we don't have the bridge detour we had last time.
We have some tents available, like last year.
Free Dorm on cots: (UNCONFIRMED, BUT LIKELY)
At the Maharishi Academy. Very spartan, but clean, warm & dry. About 4 miles from downtown.
Party: We'll buy the basics. If you want Guiness, you're buying this year!
o We're adding a porta-potty at the top of the hill, and down by the grandstands, back in the corner. Also adding a changing booth (think Superman) at the top of the hill to avoid exposing classrooms full of kids. Remember -- no use of the school bathrooms this year!
o FYI, Southwest is now flying into Boston as well as Manchester. Pricing is typically cheaper into Manchester.
More details coming in the next few days as we hash through some things.
We look forward to hosting you again this year!

Thank you Bryan.
You have the most organized event I have ever attended!
Your attention to detail is very much appreciated & I'm sure I speak for everyone!
I will be attending this year again & will probably take advantage of the dorms this year....
the bed & breakfast was fabulous, but a little pricey for my budget!
Thanks again & Joe.......... I hope your knee is healed 100% in time for Antrim.
I want to see you go down the ramp yelling "Spartacus!" (I hope I got that correct!)
That was the funniest thing I've seen so far except the time in 2007 when Chris Chaput won a slalom race in San Pedro while eating a cheeseburger from McDonalds...... true story!!

Something on Summer Street AND Jameson Friday? Or is it one or the other?
Thinking out loud here, but I wonder if we could squeeze in some kind of alternate event (training/fun/outlaw) on Friday?
I'd be happy to run/assist some sort of sideshow if there's room.

Expect a Friday afternoon/night race like the 100 cone last year, but we are looking to be more inclusive and do something along the lines of a 25/50 cone dragstrip on the side road, perhaps a "one and done" or more if we've got time.
What could POSSIBLY go wrong??

Delay in Opening of Registration
Hi, Antrim Racers:
Sorry for the delay in getting the registration open. I am waiting for approval of the online registration by the ACC executive board.
Because I lost so much money last year, I also lost my credibility with the board, unfortunately. So, from the sounds of it, they may not approve the online registration system at Active.com.
Again, I'm sorry for the delay, but I will post an update as soon as I have approval one way or the other, probably on July 9.
Thanks.

Antrim Can/Am Registration Finally Open
Greetings Antrim Racers:
Well, we've finally opened the registration for the Antrim Can/Am Slalom Championships. I'm sorry for the delay. Find the registration at the Active.com address below, NOT NCDSA.
http://www.active.com/page/Event_Detail ... 381770A488
Before you register, keep these important changes in mind.
o The Antrim Chamber of Commerce, trying to avoid the losses of last year, has made the registration ala carte. When you register, you will be asked to register for the race ($50.00, includes registration, T-shirt, party); the housing (camping/dormitory -- $50.00, two nights); and the meal package $30.00 (Friday night pizza party, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast). The whole package is still pretty reasonable given local market, but is not as cheap as it has been due to sponsorship money being hard to come by this year.
o Registration will be limited to 64 racers. That's as many as we feel we can get down the hill in the time we have. We will be taking wait list names at mailto: brianbeihl@slalomskateboard.com
o Registration is online payment only this year. If you need to cancel your registration, email me at mailto: brianbeihl@slalomskateboard.com by September 1st and we'll refund your money, provided we have people on the wait list. After September 1, our housing and food is locked in and we can't give your money back.
o If you're really broke and can't afford the camping, please let me know privately by email and I'll find a spot for you.
o T-Shirt sizes, extra t-shirts, transportation from the airport, and housing options are all addressed on the online registration. If you have questions, comments or complaints (I have my Kevlar on), post here or by email.
Sorry for the late changes, but it was unfortunately out of my hands.
Thanks again for coming to Antrim, and I look forward to seeing you in September.

*Important Notes on the Racing*
The sign up allows you to designate Pro, Open, Masters, Women. My intent is to have a, b, c, d groups in all one OPEN category. We may, MAY use the designations for singling out our fastest racer in a given class.
Again please expect our racing in one single class.
Expect to qualify Friday, followed by a bonus race along the lines of a 25-50 cones "one and done". Saturday is head to head. Sunday is GS and the beginner race.
I realize that we cannot please all racers, but I hope you will still attend and enjoy yourself.
Joe

Registration Problems
Thanks for being my guinea pigs. We fixed the race registration so now it charges the correct $50.00.
Mig reports he was unable to finish the registration as a "guest," method C. I need to check into that with the company and give further instructions.
For anybody who registered and didn't get charged, I'll get that fixed today.
Brian

Housing Questions
A couple of good questions have been asked about housing.
"Do you have a family plan for the dorm?" We're going to charge for the adults, but not the kids.
"If I come in on Wednesday, can I use the dorm?" No, we'll have to find alternate housing for you (probably with one of the committee members) on Wednesday night.
"If I come in on Thursday, can I use the dorm/campground?" Yes. We'll have the dorm open for Thursday, but there will only be a few people there.
It looks right now that we will be using the other building at the Maharishi Academy campus, not the building we used last year. The rooms are nicer and all rooms have two twin beds. However, to keep costs down, we would like you to bring your linens with you. Levitating beds are extra.

Saturday, Sept. 19 is "Talk Like a Pirate Day"
Good Morning, me hearties!
I would like your help on the Saturday of the Antrim Can/Am in celebrating Dave Barry's "Talk Like a Pirate Day." Will make a great photo op and generally be lots of fun. At 11:15, we break for the parade.
If you can help out, pick up an eye patch (or two, if you want really have fun skating down the hill), bring a pirate hat or bandana, or anything else that captures the spirit of piracy. We'll have everybody bomb the hill on the way to get in line for the parade.
Fats, I'm looking forward to the eye patch/kilt combo. Stunning, really stunning.
It will be fun! Arrrrr.

Are there any type of flyers that can be made and then printed out so anyone can put them up where ever? As the sport progresses, I think that the fan base and spectators should increase as well. If everyone contributed to doing this even a little, it certainly increases the chance that more will come to watch and be aware that the sport of slalom exists! Places like colleges, coffee shops, etc. Other than the very few web sites and word of mouth by the racers, there is a lot of public out there that doesnt even know what slalom is or that it even exists. Comments? Suggestions?

Best idea I've heard in a while. I'll design one if someone else prints it and distributes it - minus a few copies for this area.Curt DeBartalo wrote:Are there any type of flyers that can be made and then printed out so anyone can put them up where ever? Curt: Good suggestion and it would be much appreciated.Curt DeBartalo wrote:Nice! I was thinking something along the lines of a type of flyer/poster that anyone can access online and print themselves. Perhaps something simple so lots of colors dont eat up the color cartridges but at the same time something effective with dates, times, etc.
We sent out a color PDF last year, but I'll do a BW version of the poster this year in PDF form.
We also attempted to mail the posters to skate shops last year but got literally a hundred back from the USPS. Tough business, I guess. The good news is we'll have a cleaner list this year to mail to.
Thanks for the help. Poster is already in the works and will be done by Monday.

A pirate walks into a bar and the bartender says, "Hey, I haven't seen you in a while. What happened, you look terrible!"Rick Floyd wrote:Will there be a peg leg division?
"What do you mean?" the pirate replies, "I'm fine."
The bartender says, "But what about that wooden leg? You didn't have that before."
"Well," says the pirate, "We were in a battle at sea and a cannon ball hit my leg but the surgeon fixed me up, and I'm fine, really."
"Yeah," says the bartender, "But what about that hook? Last time I saw you, you had both hands."
"Well," says the pirate, "We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but the surgeon fixed me up with this hook, and I feel great, really."
"Oh," says the bartender, "What about that eye patch? Last time you were in here you had both eyes."
"Well," says the pirate, "One day when we were at sea, some birds were flying over the ship. I looked up, and one of them shat in my eye."
"So?" replied the bartender, "what happened? You couldn't have lost an eye just from some bird shit!"
"Well," says the pirate, "I really wasn't used to the hook yet."

Steve,
The secret is in how many rubber bands you use and where you put the duc-tape. OH, and colored duc-tape works best, preferably red.

More divisions equals more work Rick. If you want to volunteer for something, like Mig did timing all day last year, I'm willing to listen. My idea would be single division with your choice of start. Less paperwork.Rick Floyd wrote:Will there be a ramp-start division and a banshee division?Joe Iacovelli wrote:New at Antrim this year!

Posters for Racer Distribution
Would you be willing to help pass the word in your local community about the Antrim Can/Am?
Below are two URLs, one for a color PDF poster and one for a B&W PDF poster. If you wouldn't mind printing and posting a few copies, we'd appreciate it. This poster is geared to spectators, not to racers. We generally hit bulletin boards at the recreation areas and at skate parks.
More people is good for the sport: More buzz, more sponsors, more good will.
Thanks for your help!

Hi All. Ready for the Can/Am? Getting your practice in? Got all your bushings, wheels, and bearings in order? Good. All's well. I have cram sessions in MY book!
HEY I had a thought -
Friday is TS, Pizza Party After, there may be a little downtime.
If those of you who have the chops felt like having a little fun in the skatepark, that might be a really cool bridge-builder. I'm getting a few of those guys to hop on a race board now and then, and I like to fumble around on the park gear. I helped build it, got foot in the door... decent vibe going on, but -
There's still a lot of us vs. them going on.
If they got the idea that we is all the same, "I do this when I'm not doing that' sorta thing... might be cool.
So if I could suggest a quick, small-town skatepark session in the name of the stoke... might be good!
Just a thought.

Friday Night 9/18 Pizza Party Changes
Skaters:
You've always wanted a fan club, right?
The Friday night pizza party (part of the meal package) we did last year has been expanded. We have invited the public in for an opportunity to meet the skaters, sign autographs and chat with you all. Menu is pizza, salads, bread, sodas (donated by Pepsi), iced tea and milk for the kids. Skater spouses and kids pay $5.00, the public pays $10.00 for 13+ and $5.00 for 12 and under.
The T-shirts this year will be black with gold printing, and we'll be distributing yours and selling the rest to the public that night. We will be providing some gold & silver markers Sharpies to autograph shirts and black ones to sign everything else.
It will be fun! Thanks for your support!

Antrim had the best fireworks show I have EVER seen!
The whole show lasted over an hour. Here is the video I made from last year.
Whatever you do, don't miss out this year!
Watch last year's fireworks ending. It's awesome!

Our skatepark is no big shakes: A quarterpipe, pyramid, a couple boxes and smaller ramps.
I wouldn't make a trip for it - although a trip a few hundred yards wouldn't be so bad. Mostly about the schmooze, those guys just hunker down there when the race is in full swing.
Nashua looks cool, I'm going to get out there sometime. Haven't skated a bowl, and it looks like that's where the fun in a park would be!

Which park are you talking about? Any links or photos of it?
In Hood river a bunch of us skated the local park after the first day of racing. They have an excellent park.
