Day 1, Giant slalom

A big bunch of 56 slalom racers had gathered for the first day of this German championships in Giant slalom. 46 Germans and 10 foreigners. 46 Germans! Where did they all come from? Anyhow, that's good news for the European slalom scene. Two German oldtimers in Alex Lütz and Christian Seewalt showed up as well. Christian even bought his board the morning of the same day. Three skateshops on place where ready to set him up. He finally fell for a Fibreflex board.
For you that haven't heard of Christian he was a very good freestyler back in the good old days. An European champion even.
His slalom skills are not well known though and first rumours doesn't tell how he managed the giant course. In either case the course wouldn't have been a problem, it was set up to invite newbies.
The race was done on a street in a forest. That was an advantage this day giving some shelter from the sun. Temperature reached 35 degrees and Jani managed to drink 4,5 liters of water during the day.
The competition format was...
- 2 qualification runs.
- 16 best Germans and 16 best in open class then run for the final.
- The 4 best in each class run a head to head final. 1-4, 2-3 + Final and 3:rd, 4:th place.
4 juniors, 4 girls and the rest were seniors. Noemi Reichel won the girl class with Nastasja Wolfensberger second. Both from Switzerland.
In the Open mens class the four finalists where in the qualify order Maurus Strobel, Jani Söderhäll, Chris Hart and Paul Price.
The final order after head to head changed only the place of Jani and Chris.

Day 2, Tight slalom

Day 2 arrived with tight slalom on the schedule. Todays spectacular appearance was Max Bimler. Max is very good German slalomer from the past. And his show up was not invane. He finished second in the German championships. The course today was tight. And with tight meaning like the good old days. This suited probably Max as it would to the other old boys in the open class. Even though it was very tight it still wasn't very difficult though according to Jani. Everybody could make it. For the best it was just a matter of pumping as hard as you could from the very start until the end.
In the Open mens class it was the same four people in the final mini head to head. But this time it was Jani who had the fastest time from the qualification. Jani was really hot this day and was heading straight for victory. But he was a little bit too eager and in the first final run for the victory against Maurus Strobel he pushed to hard and went out of the course already after the third cone. They had been sitting around waiting a good while before the final race so maybe his muscles had got to sleep or something. Anyway, 1.5 seconds penalty for Jani and it was practically finished already. In the second run Jani wanted to prove that he was in good shape and that the first run mishap was a one time occasion. And he did it well. He won the second run but the victory went once again to Maurus Strobel. Rumours say he is going to train even harder now. And that doesn't say little for a guy already practicing around 3 days per week already. Paul Price got a little revench from yesterday and could take the third place before Chris Hart. 5:th place was Latvias Salvis Skarainis. His wife, Lienite Skaraine, made the family proud by taking first place in the girls class. Noemi Reichel from Switzerland was second.

Corky sure does have a talent for telling tales from competitions he's not been to. I call hime up, chats for a while and all of a sudden it is up on the web. Great!
Here's a few words to summarize the event this past weekend:
It was great!
It wasn't the best event ever, it wasn't the biggest event ever, but it was pure racing fun!
Axel Fischer had done a good job putting the whole thing together and he had a good crew to help him out - a crew made up of 90% women. I now understand that it's what it takes to put together a good event. Get the female staff working. They were there on the job, the whole day long in the 38°C and then again the same thing the next day. Inscriptions, computing, cone marshalling, starter, announcer, posting results etc etc. I'd like to thank you all - you did a great job!
