[2008] Southern Super Jam

Post by Ricky Byrd » Mon May 05, 2008 8:19 pm

Well… As you can see the first Southern Super Jam is done. We had a great turn out. Thanks to all who attended. After a couple of showers on Friday as set up was taking place, which soon dried due to the pre-rain temp of the street, the rest of the weekend has been really nice, sunny mid-70’s… perfect.

First, I’d like to send some thanks out to our generous swag sponsors. We had a nice pile of stuff for grabs. To get it done we simply pulled names from a hat.

Thanks for your support. We really appreciate it.

Friday’s Slalom Cross was awesome! We had time to run two full races even after the rain threat. There were definitely some close racing and close calls in both races. This race format is fun should run more often.

Notice in the second race Jhonathan Harms was back on the board. But if you ask him about riding this type of race with recent injuries, his response was “I’m only riding”. Well that “only riding” got him a win.

Here’s the finishes.

First Race:

Frank Henn
Marcos Soulsby-Monroy
Lou Statman
Ben Buckles

Second Race:
Lou Statman
Jhonathan Harms
Marcos Soulsby-Monroy
Clifton Jennings

Friday night we had hard rain and a big thunder storm. We knew it was coming and it came at the best time it could have, in the middle of the night. The next morning it was cool, clear and calm, a great race day forecast. We got rolling at 10:30 or so to give the road a bit of extra drying time.

After all systems were in place, we started the day by running a warm-up race with the course being set by Clifton Jennings of MS GRS and Road Kill Racing.
Here’s the results.

Next we had guest course setters “on the injured list” Jhonathan Harms and Wentzl Ruml IV. This second race of the day counted for ISSA World Ranking points. The course was a really fun “GS”, which was tough to set on this smaller hill. The guys did a great job. It really flowed fast using the whole street.

Here’s how it turned out.

Once the GS was done we broke for some lunch while the course was being changed to the ISSA points tight slalom. Guest course setters for this one was Harms and Keith Hollien… Who’s crazy enough to allow Keith within 20 yards of a tight slalom course setter while he’s working. We are. Harms laid out a burner with a good rhythm with mostly 6’s and 7’ and a couple of reaching offsets.

Here’s what came of it.

Tight Slalom - ISSA Points Race

Keith Hollien 14.346
Paul Graf 15.419
Josh Byrd 16.346

Once the day on the hill was done it was time for a trip to Pickens, MS and a blow out party. Plenty of ramp skating and good food was there to be consumed. The band rocked out all the southern favorites. “Freebird!” The big rippers of the night had to be Texans Lou Statman and David Bonnell along with three local kids who torn the place up! Good times!

Thanks again to all the sponsors, the Road Kill crew for all the help and my wife Lisa for all she did and the cash she had to throw down to make it what it was. Thanks to our long distance traveler, Wentzl Ruml IV for making the trip down and hanging with us. You are welcome at my place anytime my friend.

Saaaa…Wheeeet!
