For UK skaters thinking about heading on down to Antibes for the last rays of Summer, Easyjet.com are currently offering flights to Nice for around £100 if you head out on the Friday (19 Sept) from Gatwick and return Sunday (21 Sept) evening. Nice is about 12km from Antibes, apparently.

The track of the slalom race is in the Cap d'Antibes it's exactly 20 km from Nice Airport. If you reserve plane ticket early with Easy.jet you can have very interesting price.
Soon we add pictures of the place. (track, beachs, map) on http://planet-longskate.com

Accommodation
What about accommodation? Will you prepare any free accommodation and/or can you recommend hotels in the area? The best is probably to put that kind of information on your website. Thank's!

American participation
I have a few requests from American skaters asking if they can enter, and I have told them that this is the European Championships, open only to Europeans, can you confirm that?

Entry fee
Any decision yet on the entry fee?

Pro/Am
Will there be Pro/Am classes and or female, juniors etc?

Thank you Jani for the map.
We have now more than 70 riders register and about 50 only for slaloms.

I just give some information about accomodation : The cheapest with good quality is the HOTEL FORMULE ONE : it's 28 euro for a 3 beds room with tv and it's 15 minutes from the slalom and 5 from the downhill. I'm actualy see to have good price in a nice Hotel in Juan les Pins (5 minutes from the slalom) and one hundred meters from the sea. I give you news as soon as possible.
A lot of Swedishs, Swiss, Italians and of course frensh are already register, the lettonians seems to be interest to come.
But no news about germans and english people? I may be must closed after 100 people register.
the site is http://planet-longskate.com

Pierre, will there be start ramps for the slalom events?

Posted: Thu Aug 21, 2003 10:57 pm
by Pierre Samray
Hello Chris.
Yes we have ramps for the start, but not very steep and with step for the old riders to go on it. The track is very fast so it will be no use to push to much in the start.

Thank you. one more question: are there any good skateparks in the area and/or vertramps?

Posted: Mon Aug 25, 2003 9:03 am
by Pierre Samray
No more in Antibes and one small in Biot Chris. all the city around has their own little bad skatepark. The best one is Frejus which is 50 km from the race, but there is no big ramp (only one medium). But if you have time enough may be you can go to Marseille to ride the famous bowl! (250 km from Antibes)

UHHH yeah i can vouch for marseille park its well worth the trip from antibes. its a very sociable park, and there is safety in numbers if you decide to sleep in the bowls overnight. best park on earth, no doubt.

Hi Pierre,

is this the adress of the hotel:

Route de Saint Bernard
06220 VALLAURIS
FRANCE

can you sugggest alternates?

by Pierre Samray
Yes Chris is the good adress, the hotel is good and the price very interesting.
I have to discute the price of another hotel in Juan les Pins (5 minutes from the slalom) but I think Formule 1 stay the sheapest hotel of the city with good quality.
Expect to see you and other German people on the races. Actualy more than 10 swiss, 10 Italians, and 7 swedens..and a lot of french of course...still waiting for letonian and british.

Hello Pierre,

I am more than excited about racing with everyone in Antibes. Thank you for this opportunity to meet and race with Europe's finest. It looks like there will be more countries represented here than at Morro Bay. This truly looks to be a great event.

I recently emailed Todd Carlson (USA) and he will not be making the trip so there is room for another person in the slalom.

What transportation do you recommend from Nice Airport to Antibes? Bus? Train? Taxi?

thanks again,

Michael

Hello Mickael

So you're the only american and you're welcome on this race.
I expect you'll have a good experience in Europe. We have actualy 156 riders register for all the event and about 70 for the slaloms coming from 9 countries.
Best way when you arrive at the airport it's to take the bus which start from the airport and drive you to Antibes (30 minutes).
Be early on the track.
training begin àt 9 and race at 10.

See you soon Mickael

I sorted the list of participants registered on the website and came up with the following stats (counting only slalom participants):

Men 87
Juniors 8
Girls 4

That's impressive. Of course a few will drop out as usual, but I hope that there will be a few who show up without having registered and that they'll be allowed to race. (For example there is not a single German slalomer registered and there are plenty of them that would do a good result! And where are the Swiss girls, they dominate European slalom, why haven't they signed up yet?)

This number of participants might make this race one of the biggest in Europe.

I am looking forward to the European Races!

Can we pleae have a idea of the courses and surface. How many cones? Cone distances? How easy? Will I need to bring a longboard for the super GS? Is the event going to be head to head? How many qualifiers?

P.S. Are Michael Dong and me the only skaters who will be at both Antibe and Morro?
What about Luca?

Paul, bravo to you for competing everywhere against everybody. Same for Mr Dong. You guys are the real deal. TK

Paul,

Looks like LUCA might be coming to Morro Bay. Howard posted on NCDSA looking for a ride for him from LA.

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Answer for PAul about the race format
All is explain on the internet site
planet-longskate.com / european championship/
discipline

Special is about 40 cones straight and offset
1m80 to 4m00 spaces.
Giant is about 40 cones straight and offset 2m50 to 6 meters.
This 2 races are head to head (qualif and final) 16 best time are in final + 4 youngs + 4 girls.
The slalom will be not so difficult but the track is fast hem! very fast.
The Super GS is 250 meters long with 25 cones spaces about 10 meters and offset.
You race alone 1 run. The 16 best time have a sedcond run.

Jani : The swiss girl are now register as the Letonian one, but no germans???? I ask the guy who look after my site to put the official start list one week ago! I can't do it myself unfortunatly. Normaly you can see this list this evening on my site.
More than 160 racers for the 2 days and about 100 only for the slalom.

Pierre,

I am trying to reserve a room at formula 1 hotel but I am getting an automated service spoken in French. I have my French phrase book handy but I just can't seem to get a real person on the phone. I am trying to get a room for Friday and Saturday nights. Do you think I would have trouble finding a place to stay if I just show up on Friday afternoon and try to find a hotel on the spot?

thanks,

Michael

Thank you Michael. I love my current Roe board, but it lacks that special S-shape. Although I've done well on other shapes over the last year, I'm very much looking forward to the new S-Camber Roe deck.

Here's a brief summary of my best results 2002-2003:
Tunnel, giant, 1st: Turner Fatboy
Tunnel, special, 1st: Roe Unlimited
Moscow, giant, 1st: Bahne Black hill
Moscow, longboard giant, 1st Bahne Black hill

Gruningen, special, 2nd: S-Camber
German Championships, special, 2nd: S-Camber

I start feeling like John Gilmour who's always been carrying more stuff than a regular shop would stock, to every contest. Nowadays I mostly drive. That's the only way to bring all I need.

PS. Count Corky also among those who will compete both in Antibes and Morro Bay.

I spoke to Pierre Samray today and he said that the first ones have already arrived in Antibes. Their first comment was that the hill was steeper than they expected. So expect some pretty fast slalom.

Somebody else told me the surface is not super good, so bring a variety of wheels.

See you soon!

The surface is ok, no problems.
Mickael if you have still problem for your hotel. Call Eden Hotel in Juan les PIns (5 minutes from the race) You tell you come from Pierre de Newrider

I just heard from Michael D. (RoeRacing's world traveler/racer) via voice mail. He and some of the other racers from the UK have arrived in Antibes for the European Championship. It Friday night there already and the racers are assembling for what is surely to be a very, very exciting event. Michael's biggest worries right now are; 1)trying to find good food as he doesn't speak a speck of French, and 2)worrying about his shoes - hoping they will last through the heavy foot-breaking that will be required. (MJD - for what it’s worth – I have a huge box with your name on it shipped directly from Van’s sitting in my living room!)

There are 3 courses marked on the hill already (Tight, Special and Giant) and he said they all look great. According to Michael, it is a fairly steep hill and the courses are "different" than what we are used to seeing here. Surface is "ideal" with the exception of some paint stripes that can't be avoided.

Good Luck Mr. Dong (not that you will need it or anything like that...) RoeRacing and the rest of the US racers are wishing you the best! More reports from Antibes as they come in.

Later-
Gareth

(MJD- Check your e-mail and call me when you can on my cell phone. I need to talk to you in person – ASAP!)
