NASS British Open Slalom Championships

This will take place as one of many events happening at this years NASS Festival at the Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. This year’s festival is under completely new management, Sports Vision, who are also responsible for The Rip Curl Board Masters Series. The main event-planning meeting was held on Thursday at their offices in Hammersmith. Chris Linford, Louis Selby and James Parry-Jones, myself, and latterly Paul Price (who incidentally undertook the initial site visit) attended.

The event will feature vert and street skating, inline, BMX, FMX and a host of other attractions, rides, stalls and try-outs. There are also a host of music acts including Pendulum and The Subways performing on stage. We have been invited along to showcase slalom racing to the 10,000 strong capacity crowds.

The event runs from Friday 13 – Sunday 15 June.

The format for racing will be:

Friday – Practice/Demo races

Saturday – Dual Special Slalom

Sunday – Dual Hybrid Slalom

(We will probably be able to cram in some additional races as well as we are not limited to a particular finish time on Saturday!)

Camping will be away from the main public campsite in the separate competitor area.
Access will be limited to those wearing competitor wristbands (issued on signing into the showground) and will have 24-hour security.

Relentless, one of the main sponsors, will be providing an “Athletes Lounge” serving food, courtesy of “Nandos”, twice daily at 1pm and 3pm to ensure we all get a chance to eat. Again access to this area will be by wristband.

Due to the erection of crowd fencing vehicular access will be severely restricted after the event starts on Friday, we will however have use of the competitor car park.

There will also be medical teams on onsite with 24-hour cover.

What we ask from all of you is that you sign up as soon as possible and make your payment by PayPal, £25 for one day or £35 for the weekend (All proceeds go to UKSSA). We need to submit a list of all registered racers to the organisers at the beginning of June – if your name is not on the list you don’t get in! We know this is very short notice but urge you not to miss out on this event – this could be the start of something big!
This will be a fun weekend and as such our racing will be more of an exhibition of slalom racing, people may ask you questions and we will also be allowing other skaters etc. to have a go. The Sports Vision guys have already thrown gauntlets down with each other!
The main sponsors Vans and Relentless have donated some very large purses for the main arena events this year, who knows next year – Prime Status and muchos £?

We need to put on a really good show here and are asking for everyone to pull together and support this event.

Important!

Thursday night we will have full vehicular access until 9am when the barriers arrive.
Please note: Cars are not allowed onto the site after Friday morning. You will not be allowed to park next your tent. But as stated we do have a separate competitor car park.

On arrival go to the main entrance, your name will be on a list (but only if registered), then go to the event office, past the shopping village, to get your competitor wrist band.

You will need to carry your camping stuff to the athlete camping area, which will have security so should be safe and quieter.

More info to come as we get it.

More information on the NASS Festival and band line up can be found at www.nassfest.com

NASS 13-15 June 2008 - race site inspection

I drove down to the race site for NASS on Saturday to check the new section of Slalom racing road that was suggested at Thursdays meeting with the NASS crew.

The good news its a good section and is closer to the action. It will be fenced off and is away from the general camping area (the athletes camping area is just after the end of the slalom course).

In the photos the start line will be by the white van (just after the road). The black 350z is facing down the race slope 3/4 of the way thru the course.

There is room for about 40-50 cones tight (about a 12 second course) and 30 cones easy hybrid.

The slope is pretty easy, and will allow beginners to go at a reasonable speed. The middle section flattens, but then steepens again. I suggest leaving about 30 feet for foot braking. The finish line arch should be a quarter of the way past the oval which is along side.

There is room for dual racing, and maybe a fun single lane hybrid.

The surface is fine for 80 durometer wheels, and feels good underfoot. There will need to be sweeping as the loose stones along the edge can find their way on track.

This event s looking really good, even at short notice, and will really show a big audience of skaters and the media that slalom racing is hot action!

Thanks for everybody helping so far.

There is still lots to sort out so don't be shy in offering your talents!

Too right, Bish! This tent floats away in the rain.

If it looks towards being somewhat precipitous then please send the search party down to the Severn estuary.
Portishead is a rockin' good place to start.
