Dear all,
I just wonder why if you look at the world ranking page, on the right side of it inside the menu of the coming event (which displays races vs cones and dates) it does not appear the europchampionship info. Obviously the main status remains, right?
Anyway, have a nice vacation and CU there.
Cheers,
Stefano

Sorry Stefano,

I have not enough time to keep everything up to date as I would like. I have now added the European Championships in the "coming events" list at www.slalomranking.com

Some have shown an interest in doing some small articles with text/pictures/interviews from events so I try to prepare the ranking site for this right now.

The ranking site is looking for calendar administrators. Both for Europe and US. ;-)

No problem at all. I can imagine that keeping all updated it is nearly impossible. So keep it going but do not become slave of it. Thanks for your effort.

Hello all. There is actualy 40 racers who have already register. Seems it will be a great contest. Organisation expect a lot of young from different country (Italia, Swiss, sweden,Germany, France) It's important now to think about the future of our sport. Bring all the boys and girl who practice with you and let them having fun here.

For all those who project to come, don't forget to add your name here.

I think a skatepark will be installed on the site (600 m2)
For those who'd like to skate around there's an open concrete bowl in Grenoble
<IMG SRC="http://www.sk8-world.com/spots/grenoble1.jpg">

and the Alpexo skatepark:
<IMG SRC="http://www.sk8-world.com/spots/grenoble4.jpg">

and the inddor skatepark seems quite good:
<img src="http://skateparkgrenoble.free.fr/media/ ... ARKgre.jpg">
http://skateparkgrenoble.free.fr (but check the opening period... and probably the skatepark modules of the event will come from there???)

you can also bring your downhill boards, these is a good area for that!

It appears to be a bit confusing since there seem to be some contradictions in the course line-up if we compare what was discussed one or two months ago and what has been published recently (=today).

On the ISSA Sanction Document it says:
Special & Tight: Quals, 2 runs each, then top 16 pro, top 16 am, top 8 women, top 8 juniors.
Giant: Two runs each, best run counts.
On the "Road Book" it is only mentioned that it's gonna be Special Slalom on Saturday and Cyber Slalom on Sunday. No Tight/Straight Slalom is mentioned.

In the Presentation Brochure they list (translated from French):

Cyber Slalom:
- free chrono trials
- 40 cones, cone distance 1.80m

Special Slalom Pro
- international & national compeditors
- Junior trials (?!)
- 40 cones, cone distance 1.70m

Giant Slalom
- 40 cones, offset; cone distance 2.50m-10m

So my my Questions:

- Did you abandon the Tight/Straight Slalom completely and why is there a Cyber Slalom Challenge?
- What do I have to expect for the Special Slalom?

According to the Straight Slalom issue discussed earlier in this topic:
ISSA wrote:"2.3 Each course shall consist of a series of cones placed in a straight line. The distance between cones shall be 1.7 m (measured from center to center)."

Pierre Samray wrote:Well if ISSA write 1m70. Let's be ok for 1m70.

I guess everyone has been practising for the European Championship, right?
So did I.
I practised 1.70m Straight Slalom on a flat surface. I even put the focus of training on 1.70 Straight Slalom - it's what we've been doing for the last couple of weeks just to be prepared for the Euros.
Can you see my point?

thanks for quick veryfication of the line-up.

Hey, do we want Slalom to grow or die? I am not talking shit man. Notice that there are people who do believe Slalom might become Olympic one day (I personally don't). But at least we could start somewhere and improve ourselves in scheduling. One day they say its like this, the other day they say it's the other way round. Do you think any big Sponsor likes that? Do you think an Olympic Comittee accepts that? This sport is my passion and I'd like it to grow and become better in different aspects. I don't know what you see in it. Sometimes it looks like it's some kind of kindergarten party. I had enough kindergarten parties when I was 5.

are we sportsmen or part of some international kindergarten meeting group?

buuuurrrrb!!!! achemmmm...kuffff.....SPORTSMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

slalom has to go more into the extreme anyway, we can't do that on flat surface in any way, you know? SO let happen what has to happen, let it die, and we'll taking it back to life again....
ohhhh...back to life, back to reality...bla bla. But yeah, as far the shedule is concerning I would like to know what to expect, may it only because of not being confused all the time, it's stressing in general.

Yeah you're right Dom, we ain't sportsmen, we're skaters. We can't deny there are people who practise and people who don't. I don't care about that. But I care about good organisation etc.

Pierre Samray wrote:What we call cyber slalom is the french cyber slalom.(40 cones with 1m80 spaces) But in fact it's just what some call tight slalom and the true name must be straight slalom.
Pierre said this back in June when someone queried that it said, and still says, Cyber Slalom on the website. I did ask for confirmation at the time that the Straight Slalom was 1.7m but as I didn't get a reply I assumed after the long conversation about cone distance that it would be 1.7m. I hope I'm right....

This is a EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS so any doubts should be cleared up pretty quickly, I'm sure everyone is really busy this close to the event, but this is pretty important, just my opinion ;)

cyber is straight!

Pierre never really confirmed anything about the staight (the post means nothing), even one week ago when I asked him...
but hey he said that the pro special will be tight and challenging so you should be happy.

I could do only two short flat sessions: one at 1m70 and the other one at 1m80 (before loosing one shoulder :( )

You're lucky enough that you could have trained much more than most of us, sportman Ramon ;)
Showing the sport in good conditions is a more important thing than details in the cone spacing and Grenoble is a great opportunity for that.
For what I've understood if we play the game on flat, next year we could have hills!

I suppose they decided to go Cyber Slalom so we'll have time for a NATION CUP!!!
Paris and Antibes prove it, a nation cup is a great show (fun for spectators and fun for racers).

ISSA expects organizers to set courses that were agreed to in conversation on this link. The reason for the formation and re-emergence if ISSA in the first place was to help promotote and organize consistency, continuity and to inform the racers what to expect before booking travel.

I expect that silence by the organizers means they are staying away from any further discussion and will abide by what they had posted or stated previously on this forum concerning course setting.

Okay Vincent,

this is a well reasoned answer from you. I can agree on your line up insofar I respect your sort of traditional cyber slalom challenge and agree that it is the same conditions for everyone. Still , and this is Claude's point, I think racers should know what they can expect especially when the race is held on a flat surface.
And it's good to have the aditional Nations Cup, that's what spectators like.

I hope the weekend will show high competition and good vibes.

gone practising special slalom (again finally)

Good sggestion Guillaume, but the point is that you get (or want to get) used to a certain cone distance to gain the most possible acceleration.

because both are fun and different
because maybe you will attend another race after Grenoble
because one train more your technical skills
because other train more your pumping skills
because a good slalomer is supposed to be fast and clean on both

Well, thanks for the advice and the coaching...but if I only have time to train for one distance (wife, child, job etc) then I'll train the distance the contest says it is! I don't normally do any straight courses because personally I find them boring.

Yes Fred you are right! Beautiful baby by the way.

As an organizer you are suposed to post and stick with the proposed course setting, so the Pro racer can prepare to put on a professional, great show.

If you sold the other deck you could give the 50 euros to Ramon for me so he can bring it to me in noth Carolina.

Thanks and again Good Luck and try to have some fun, EH!

Us Brits have enough difficulty adapting from this:

But we train regularly, and can sometimes end up doing a wiggly walk of curve frequency 1.7m.

really sorry. I did not want my words seem to be "coaching" (i don't know you but I have respect) but only my point of view. For me it apply the same way for special courses.

And if I totally support the ISSA thing, I m not sure "non-flexible" rules are a good solution.
Racers should know what to expect, but organisers should have some "freedom" too

ok see you all this WE

I called Philippe Galindo to find out about the disciplines and he confirmed that the disciplines are the same as in Paris: Tight, Special and Giant.
If there is time on Sunday there will be a Nations Cup.

The word cyber was used to describe straight = tight slalom. It did not mean that we're doing an official cyberslalom (which would have been the right place for it, but Philippe always wanted the parallel events - except for Giant).

Responsible for course setting is Pierre Samray, so he'll have the final word on the cone distances (of all discplines).

Once the race is on, I'll be in charge of the rules, disputes, etc. I'm not speaking this time, so I'll be available to take your discussions on everything except the course setting. I will try to oversee the race to be able to make any decisions as to disputes. The preliminary race committee also contains Pierre Samray and Jean Sebastien Dennebouy, so if we have to make an important decision the three of us will determine the outcome.

More news on the organization will be announced on site!

Philippe reports that the weather forecast is fine and that the town is covered with event posters and that the town is doing their job a 100% to get ready for the event.

Now it's up to us to run the show!

See you all very early on Saturday. As we can't have the giant course more than half the day, we'd better get started in time so that we can all get our runs in.

Travel safe!

/Jani

I would like to ask one little question about formality:

If Tight Slalom equals Straight Slalom so why is it 1.80 on a flat surface and therefore equals Cyber Slalom!?

Dear Ramon,
in my opinion you are fully right.
I practised 1.70 tight on flat because this was scheduled. It is my personal opinion that if you race pro you are able to race 1.70. otherwise you have just to change cathegory. Sorry for being strict, but the courses have to be technical at least for our cathegory because of the fact that there are TWO cathegories. This could be questionable, but until there will be two of them, there is no point. Pro means more difficulties.
CU there,
stef

Ramon you should have been at the Swedish Nationals last weekend, we ran 1.70 on a small hill. Everybody was happy with the course and even some of the 11(!) juniors made the 50 cones clean.

One of my funniest memories of "cyber-slalom" is from Antibes 2004. The "cyber" was 39 cones, had a startramp and was on a small decent. Basically nothing of the cyber except that it was almost straight and a slalomcourse... Thats what I call redefinition :)

Anyways I hope you have loads of fun and good luck to all!

Go Team Sweden!

Except for that the GS wasn't a GS at all. Sad story. Congrats anyways. Read more about it tomorrow.

good night
