ABEC7 vs. ABEC7 Ceramics

I got two new sets of PT Bearings. One set of regular ABEC7 and one set of ABEC7 Ceramics.
My first impression is , that I can't find any difference in the performance of the bearings ! Only the price ! ;-(
Is that right that the ceramics should be "faster" ?
Or is it just the "roll in" time and after a while I can see/feel a difference ?

sealed or shield

You will feel the difference after a while...
To my mind the PT Ceramics (sealed and shield) roll more smoother than the 'normal' ABEC 7 bearings do.

My fastest bearings are ABEC 7 shielded Ceramics.

Carsten, they are probably not faster. Actually there are not much difference in speed of any of the bearings you buy with the type of speed and force we create on them. If you use them in a machine that runs 24 hours a day and with very high speed (let's say 100 miles/hours) then we can start talking about quality.

I would suggest buying cheap bearing and instead buying new ones more often. Having clean/well oiled bearings are much more important for our purpose as slalom racers.

When you hear a grinding noice from your bearings (like I did with mine at the end of this season) you know you should have changed bearings one or two months ago. :-)

Hi Corky!

Thats excactly what I have said on cruisin.de. Abec7 are made for precise machines. If you use them on a skateboard you can surely use abec 3 or 5 with the same result.

some do not need fast bearings... or ...

Please read this from an Australian bearing manufacturer!!

I have a set of ceramic bearings. And I cannot feel any difference in riding them or others. It's all in your heads. (That's my personal opinion)

steel vs. ceramic

coming back to Carstens question

read and know more about the difference
http://www.edsbearings.com/faqbearings.html#question5
there is much more to find and to read ...

for sure ceramic bearings last longer than steel bearings - if you have sealed bearings, than you maintenance intervals (clean, lube...) are quite longer.

tests ands experinces ...
through the years my skatemates and I have done several tests of different bearings... most of them were steel based ... with and without an ABEC rating (- but ABEC is not the point...).
There are ways to make nearly every bearing fast as heel, but these methods do not last very long ... since the mid 70s we have had several 'tricks' for tuning bearings...

back to Carstens question
Some can feel the difference, some feel nothing - but that doesn't matter... and if you don't feel the difference... placebo effect works as most of you know ;-) ...

Some riders have decided to ride PT Ceramic bearings - may be they have all different reasons... but results tell more than tests
e.g. Kenny Mollica World Champion 2003 did it.

I know that there are only a few very fast bearings outside, but most of them do not last as long as PT do (without maintenance) and most of them are more expensive than PT.

Thanks for answering my question !! It seems I can save a lot of money not buying Abec 7 ceramics !?! :-)

not actual, because

1. they definitely last a lot longer

2. no rust (compare e.g. Vlads posting concerning his problem with Builtins....)
viewtopic.php?t=1182&highlight=rust

3. they have to be cleaned more seldom

reason: stronger material - - -

my résumé to save money and to have fast bearings, too: PTs green sealed for training and PT ceramic gold shielded for competition

I own several sets of Ed's and some Oust Moc 9's Biltins etc and I trust Pleasure tools for the price and performance !! I use the seal 7's mostly but find the sheilded ceramics to be slight smoother and faster.. What ever you decide..Support Ed's Pleasure Tools, cause he supports us!!!!

hey carsten...
what about the new G.O.G. HEIZÖL bearings?
they run on haushaltsöl which means no olivenöl or other garbage.
i heard they are abc 9 with zwiebelringe as shields.
they are a bit smelly but superfast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
even ramon, luca and heidi are stoked on these!

yo Don.....my initial post was from 2004 ! :-) It took you 3 years to answer my question ? :-)
But as you know I'm allways interested in new slalom stuff !
But I would prefer FRITTENFETT bearings, not HEIZÖL ! Heizöl is much more heavier than FRITTENFETT.
I want to be the first tespilot !!!
