Stupid Joy...

Post by Stephen Lavin » Mon Mar 16, 2009 12:01 am

It is a beautiful day today in Mokena Illinois aka center of the cultural universe second only to NYC.

I decide to get on a board and ride for the first time since the Dixie Cup. Why not right? There is a local race next week and the sizzler the week after next. Gotta get my legs.

I grab some cones and plan to head out to the commuter rail station. Great spot to skate on Sundays, nice tarmac. All set to go and cannot find my chalk... Hmm, where did I put that stuff. Last I saw my bag I dropped off some stuff for Peter a new local skater; thinking maybe I left my whole chalk stash.

I look everywhere and cannot find any chalk. Figure what the heck who needs chalk anyway I never hit any cones. But wait just a second...,

I open the trunk of each car (yes I have too many). Dig through tons of crap and no, no chalk. Ahh, but what is in that secret compartment in the back of my Nissan Quest? I slowly open it to reveal two pieces of chalk and... OMG a clear brand new old stock Radikal bushing! Pure joy and heaven ('cause I don't know any better). Off I go gleaming like a school boy.

I get to the station and setup 50 cones. Simple straight and 6' on center for a little lung and leg practice. No sooner than I get through my second run and I get stopped by the cops.

Cop pulls up, "sorry but I have to tell you to stop skating". I say "why". Cop says "because you're not allowed to skate here anymore". I ask if this is new and he says "yes". The the cop starts to laugh at me. I think this is odd and I ask him what's so funny? He says he feels bad because he has no problem chasing off kids but feels odd since I'm SO old. If my kids weren't such upstanding Mokena citizens I would have told that cop to go F@#k himself, but what the hell..., at least I have a new clear bushing...

Steve - 47 degrees and dry pavement at my training spot Saturday, a friggin' miracle in Northern VT (aka Southern Canada) for March 14th...set a nasty 40 cone TS as my first of the season (because I am an idiot and a masochist...bad combo)...no cops...in fact, the property manager came by and gave me his business card and told me to call him if I "see anything suspicious going on". The road/lot is an old IBM warehouse - one of the buildings is now a Homeland Security Center. They probably have every run I make on tape. Feel free to stop by! ;-)

I went out yesterday too, my local spot.

No cops but also no clear Rad bushing

It's amazing how much more I suck at this than I thought I did :(

oh yeah, forgot to tell you. You left two pieces of chalk on my desk, and the bag full of the rest of it on my roommate's desk! LOL, sorry I didn't mention it earlier, I kept forgetting.

See you in Texas!
