RISKS OF SKATEBOARDING

Post by zackery walter » Thu Jan 21, 2021 6:22 am

Skateboarding is considered an extreme sport with several dangerous performances and tricks. The normal injuries due to skateboarding are usually bruises, scratches, or broken arms and legs. However, the worst scenario is that skaters have to deal with fatal damages or even death if a severe accident happens.

As reported in 2017, approximately 100,000 people end up in hospital emergency rooms due to skateboarding. The typical age of these patients is around 15 to 24 years old according to Injury Facts.

Typically, skateboarding usually causes injuries to your arms, legs, neck, and trunk as well as some common damages like sprains, strains, and other fractures. In some cases, skateboarders have to suffer from facial injuries like a broken nose or fractured jaw. However, these incidents are not as dangerous as head injuries since they can lead to several negative effects on skaters or even death.

Therefore, it is necessary that skateboarders understand clearly about these kinds of injuries as well as know how to deal with some common accidents. In this article, I will provide you with several important pieces of information about skateboarding injuries that you may find useful.

Different skateboarding styles account for different types of injuries; therefore, you can visit SkateAdvisors to get a detailed explanation about this topic. The website covers a wide range of skating types such as cruising, street skating, longboarding, etc.

For a skater who has been skating for a long time, he/she may hear about the death of Russian Olympic champion Sergei Grinkov due to a training session happening in Lake Placid, New York. The skateboarder died due to a sudden heart attack in front of his partner who is also a skater.

To help other people understand thoroughly about skateboarding injuries, let’s take a look at the following common questions:

IS IT GOOD TO EXERCISE WITH SKATEBOARDS?

Although skateboarding was treated as a fringe sport in the past, this sport has become more and more popular with children, teenagers, and young adults recently. With skateboarding, skaters can improve cardiovascular stamina and increase their level of flexibility and coordination.

SKATEBOARDING CONTAINS A LOT OF JUMPING SO DOES IT AFFECT YOUR KNEES?

No matter what you do to protect your knees from being damaged, they will degrade over time as you get older and older. Therefore, it is worth trying something new despite the risk of permanent damages. By learning the right techniques in skateboarding, you can avoid several mistakes that lead to fatal injuries.

WHEN SHOULD MY KIDS START SKATEBOARDING?

This is the most common question when parents decide to let their kids take up skateboarding. Although there is no restriction in age for skateboarding, the best time is when your children are between 5 and 10 years old. To ensure safety, parents make sure that there is adult supervision during practicing.

TYPES OF COMMON INJURIES

Based on my experience, skateboarders usually need to deal with:

Facial injuries: broken noses, jawbone, or teeth

Scratches, cuts, sprains, strains, or bruises on the arms, legs, neck, and trunk. Sometimes due to the great impact of a wrong technique fall, you can get broken bones or fractured wrists.

Severe injuries: the most dangerous type of injury is head injuries; however, you can prevent this with a proper helmet.

HOW DANGEROUS IS LONGBOARDING? IS LONGBOARDING SAFER THAN NORMAL SKATEBOARDING?

Longboarding is highly recommended for new skaters due to the simple skills this skating style requires. Nevertheless, a new study suggests that longboarding is actually more dangerous than other types of skateboarding.

Longboarders usually perform on roads which creates the ideal condition to put riders at the risk of colliding with other vehicles. Unlike other skating styles, when accidents happen for longboarders, they usually suffer from more severe injuries, especially head injuries. Upper body damages like skull fractures, concussion ( a traumatic brain injury), or head bleeding are common in longboarding accidents.

Very informative article.
As reported in 2017, approximately 100,000 people end up in hospital emergency rooms due to skateboarding. The typical age of these patients is around 15 to 24 years old according to Injury Facts.
By the way, I didn't know that so many people end up in hospital emergency rooms due to skateboarding.
I love sports, especially skateboarding. By the way, I have March 5 zodiac sign, and this explains a lot in this case.
