GR- 23. CONE MARSHALS

Post by Jadranko Radovanovic » Wed Nov 08, 2006 9:11 pm

23. CONE MARSHALS

There should be one cone marshals for every 5-15 cones (normally 10), depending on the total number, the distance between the cones and the difficulty of the course every 15 cones, but a cone marshals area should be no more than 30 m in length. After each run he shall indicate to the main judge the number of cones hit in his part of the course. This is preferably done with signs prepared in advance with numbers from 01-10. The green 0 sign should be used to indicate that no cones were hit, and to ensure that the cone marshals are paying attention. A sign indicating DQ should also be available. This sign could also be red with no text on it.

Nowadays there's often a cone judge for every 10 cones, so maybe the rule should be less strict and say something "every 5-15 cones (normally 10), depending on the total number, the distance between the cones and the difficulty of the course".

It says the cone judge signs should have number up to 10. The ones we typically use only have numbers up to 9, but if the cone judge is responsible for 10 cones that's not completely enough, however if we now extend it to 15 we're in for new trouble (with the old signs, time to redo new ones). Maybe it's easier to stick to 10.

After all these rules are primarily guidelines to help organizers with the planning and execution of an event, so the more precise it is the better it is for them.

Cone Marshalls

Post by Claude Regnier » Sat Dec 02, 2006 5:06 pm

I think there can actualy be a minimum/maximum cone count per cone marshall dependant upon the type of course.

Good point about the cones judging book Jani. Only space to count 9 in a section. There is a huge reluctance to use the book worldide however! Not sure why?

One thing i've noticed this year that at several of the events there was no official at the bottom of the course. This is poor race organisation.

This needs to be instituted as a rule. When cones get tight and fast at the bottom it is easy to get loft n the left/right turn and exit the course properly.

For higher level status races and difficult course we my want to have one for each course. Not having a course official at the end of each and every race is poor and can lead to errors in results.
Many Happy Pumps!

I don't think we should count it as real resistance. It's probably as easy as there are non apart from those that I and Detlef have produced.

As it's typically towards the end of the course where judging gets complicated we should recommend that experienced judges are placed there rather than earlier in the course. Having a separate judge overseeing the whole course is a good idea. The best position for that person is probably at the end of the course, but in the cases where you have the timing table at the start of the course maybe it's just as good to have him up at the top. The most important is that he oversees the whole run.
