[2004] Region West Atlantic: USA West

Post by Hans Koraeus » Sat Mar 13, 2004 1:53 am

West Americans have 6 high status competitions to select for each season.
3 Main
3 Prime

This topic is aimed for West Americans to discuss statuses for the competitions in their region.

Note! All competitions count into the world ranking though. All competitions apart from the selected above will get the status "Basic". There is no limit for this status but it should still be considered only for serious competitions. With the "Basic" status the competition can’t have a separate Pro class. Its highest class will be the Open class.

The world ranking now has special rankings for Pro and Am. It's a personal choice to race as Pro or not. Often it is not necessary for racer to state this choice because it can be decided automatically depending on if racer enter pro classes or not in any competitions during the year. If not entered current year previous year is used. If no Pro class is found the racer is treated as Am.

This year there has only been OPEN competitions in USA so there have not been any clear picture of who is Pro or not. There are a lot of points to fight about and why it is better to have this settled before.

If nothing else is brought to my attention the following group of racers will be treated as Pros in the World Championships.

Any Pros wanting to run as Am or any Am wanting to run as Pro in the above lists? To have points counted towards either the Pro or the Am ranking you have to put forward this before the Morro Bay event.

I have had some comments on the Cyber Slalom in Morro Bay. Normally it was meant for Breckenridge but was cancelled. Then it was decided to run it during the World Championships in Morro Bay. The question is whether to count the cyber slalom with Major or Main points for the World Ranking. What I have been told the cyber is not included in the World Championship event that has Super-G, Hybrid and TS. The cyber is more like an event on the side.

I have counted all 4 disciplines as Major status. It is of course a big advantage the more disciplines you have to get two good results/points this way. Any comments on this? If not I will count all 4 with Major points.

World Championships of Skateboard Racing
October 8-10, 2004
Paso Robles, California
The Cyber Slalom CupTM

Hmm, going back to the the ncdsa calendar and reading through the registration page I now have a better picture of it. It is actually a different event even though the event title above may fool you.

The cyber slalom should then in my view not be counted with Major points. It is two different events. They just happen to take place the same weekend and in the same place. Like this...

- World Champs, Morro Bay. Status: Major. [Super-G, Hybrid, TS]
- Cyber Slalom Cup, Paso Robles. Status: ? [Cyber]

I have put a question mark on status of the cyber event. Normally it should just get a Basic Status but since there is a Prime status that has not been used yet one could imagine setting Prime status on the cyber as well.

Rick, I take it that you mean that you don't want to count the cyber as an event/discipline of the World Championships. If so the above will make sense to you I guess.

If this is ok so far then the question is what status to give the Cyber Slalom Cup event?

I have been sleeping on this tricky situation. I think even though it is two separate events/competitions it will have to be counted as one in the eyes of the World Ranking. We can't have people doing four disciplines and then saying it is two events which makes you being able to count 4 results instead of the intended 2 per event trip. This is one of the foundamentals behind the ranking system.

So, I think we will have to go back to my original plan for the Morro Bay event. The four disciplines in the eye of the world ranking will belong to the same Morro Bay event. And since Morro Bay has Major status all the disciplines will be given Major points. The two best points per person will count towards the World Ranking.

Rick, it would be interesting to hear why you don't want the cyber slalom to count.

Jeff, this is maybe not the best thread to come out... or did you have something else in mind?

Of course the Cyber event has to count as a major. How does any slalom skater think we ever get big price purses if the EVENT with THE BIGGEST price purse only count as a prime event.

I personally think most critics will come from those whom can´t push start, pump or drag stop. Get real, promote the sport and encourage sponsors and organizers. Give those whom deserve it a high ranked event.

I think there should be a set standard:
If you want an event to have Major status you have to have a price purse of $X. If you want to receive main status the price purse have to be $Y.
And so on, of course is the standard on timing system and start ramps, single qualifying and so on necessary.

The punk rock f#@k you all attitude don’t have any room in today’s skateboard. The 80 are gone wake up, or grow up. If we ever gonna be looked upon as athletes and get big price purses we all have to pull in the same direction. To be able to do so we need to know the direction. I know what I want, do you?

This should be obvious for all, riders, media and manufactures of skateboard products. We are all dependent on each. other whether we like it or not. I know some people have a hard time to fall in line, but I rather fall in line then bending over and bite the pillow. You might don’t like what I say, find, but my dick is like my skating, only harder to swallow.

Punk Rock

Goad,

Skateboarding may be punk rock to you, it isn't to me. Maybe it's a generational thing, when I started skating, punk didn't exist.

Jeff,

I was 11 years old in 1967. I think the big song that summer was "Monday, Monday" by the Mamas and Papas.

I like all kinds of new things, punk is not new.

Only dirt is older than I am.

See you soon, bro (70's speak).

goad peter jack

punk...
started for me in 77-i was 16 at that time.my region was well known for being one of the 3 major breeding grounds for punk and subculture besides hamburg and berlin.i know,as a matter of fact, that the us-boyz got aware of that cultural stream a bit later on in the late 70's.
so much for that.

peter:i totally dig outstanding personalities.punk rockers,punk-ass guys,hardcores,extreme personalities-whatever.
each sport needs these outstanding individuals-as long as they don't harm
the sport-to add color to it.

that is something you should understand.without those extreme characters life and slalom would be definitely boring.

so let's be a bit more open-minded

He is!? If so that causes for a scandinavian celebration! A Norwegian world amateur first place, yeah! I bet his name is really Haggy Ström but I see he entered his name as Strom in the memberlist. It could also possibly be Strœm or Strøm. I know the Norweigian have some funny characters. (Like the Swedish å ä ö would be normal...).
