New to Slalom in P.A.

Hey there.
I just got a slalom board and im looking for some good spots to practice in south-eastern p.a. any ideas for a newbie?

Come to think of it I kind of worded that wrong, i live in south-eastern pa but i'll travel a bit for a nice hill.
keep in mind im pretty broke so I can't really be going too far as of yet.

Welcome Justin,

Now there are a whopping THREE slalom skaters in PA. I live in York and Kevin (KMG)
lives about 3 hours west of here.

The only spots I've found are school parking lots. There are some good roads, but they all have too much traffic. Look around for big, sloping parking lots. Commuter lots are probably a good bet in your area, as they're usually empty on weekends.

Also, watch the DC section of this site. There's lots of riding/racing down there.

You should run a banked slalom at reynolds high school in lancaster. That place is sick.

Couldn't find Reynolds high school, but there is a middle school by that name.

Already printed directions and will check it out tomorrow. Can you describe it?

Thanks for the reply fellas.
I just thought of a mall that has a giant almost bowl-shaped parking lot, and that part of the parking lot just happens to never have anyone parked there. (its the furthest spot from the mall.)
This school sounds awesome, i've been looking for something like that.

it's called oxford valley mall, i'm not too sure about how the asphalt is, as i havent been there in a while, so it may not even be worth it if its crappy.
But i'm going to go check it out probably tommorrow.
I hope it's in good enough shape, because i'm not trying to get cheese gratered.

It probably is the middle school. I havent been there since 91' memory is starting to slip.

So as I remember it: It is a parking lot with banked walls on 3 sides of it. There is a "ditch" running down the middle of the parking lot which seperates the parking lot into 2 sections.

It was a pretty big bust back in the day but things have changed since then. Let me know how it turns out.

1st wknd in May, at Seneca Creek State Park, in Maryland...just off 270 in Gaithersburg, Cardinal Picnic area....you won't be disappointed...$3 entry fee into park, free to skate...ask PA Dan or KMG, they'll agree....slalom from sunrise to sundown...it's worth the drive.

Justin,

John is right. The best time and place for a new skater to show up is at The Gathering. All levels of courses are set. You are free to ride almost anyones board (just ask first). You can even get help tweaking your own equipment.

I tend to not usually speak in absolutes and imperatives, but for a new rider this is the pinnacle event. While slalom skaters, especially DC slalom skaters, are a friendly lot, if show up at a more formal "race" you'll find people more focused on their needs than yours.

There presently isn't any scene to my knowledge in the Philly area, so DC is your best bet. We will have some beginers races in CT and MA this spring. Feel free to PM me your phone # if you would like any more specific information. I got some great help when I started and would like to pass on the vibe.

Good point Frank. Justin, Frank, and everyone else, The Farm Race is August 6 and is near Danbury CT and White Plains, NY about 1 hour north of NYC.
