Position available: Avatar management - solved!

Post by Jani Soderhall » Wed Dec 01, 2004 6:15 pm

Is there anyone out the who would like to give a helping hand with the management of members avatars?

Skills needed:

- Photoshop or similar to resize the images
- FTP to upload the images to the site

The most important is to be careful not to screw up the whole thing.

Jani,
I could help with this if you need. I already know photo management of this site and uploading to it fairly well anyway, and I have Photoshop.

Why not let regular users change their avatar themselves via url link, since phpBB already has this feature built-in?

Maybe not a bad idea WesE but please let us be free of the animated ones, Jeff... ;-)

Glenn,

You're in. You already know all about the structure of this site using FTP. I have given you admin rights to the forum which is what you need to assign images to each skater.

We could decide to allow uploading of avatars, but we still need someone to "police it" or it'll go nuts. Before we could allow that anyway we'd need to revise the way we handle the avatars and the "title". Glenn and I will have a look at that together.

Thanks!

I think you should have a bit more faith in your users. There are plenty of forums that allow uploading of avatars, and very few problems. Just place a restriction on the image size (e.g. maximum of 100 x 100 pixels) , and trust in the good sense of your userbase.

The ability to embed images (particularly in sigs!) is more easily abused than the uploading of avatars.

See <a href="http://www.bomberonline.com/VBulletin/f ... ronline</a> for an example of a forum (alpine snowboarding) with a similar user demographic yet with avatar uploading.

Bomberonline is garbage. As well as most of the BoL members' avatars.

Please keep avatar uploading under control on this site. And do check www.bomberonline.com that used to be a good hardboot forum.

If everyone starts using what Jeff and I (and other copycats) are using in our signature it'd be tones of fun! Let's all keep doing it!

Thank you Glenn.

If you can allow self uploading I say make that an option for sure. I say let those that want to have a little fun with it and be creative. But I'll help if anyone needs help. I'm sure there might be some that might like help with it.

On second thought after seeing Vlads picture he posted there....maybe he's right ;-)

Jani, could you send me an email telling me how to do whatever it is I'd need to do?

I normally don’t notice animations because I have set my browsers to not display them, but I can definitely see your point, Glenn.

If phpBB can restrict avatars to just jpgs, that should keep readers from being abused with animations.

Interesting idea Wes. Maybe we could restrict animated images in general but leave a playground for those who want to play. I agree it's fun... one or two times. But after a while it's not that fun anymore. This is not abused yet here but looking at some forums it looks more like a casino.

Let people play but also don't let others be forced into the game.

Bomber has an option intergrated in their software. One click - no avatars.

But animated/stupid/huge-size signatures?...

Who is administrating the names for all the users on the site? The idea is for all of us to use our real names. This is not the case right now. There are a few exceptions. I also think all names should have first letter as Captial.
