Dublin, GA. outlaw race General Info

First I want to thank everyone for signing up! I'm humbled that you guys are willing to make the trip to Georgia for a simple outlaw gathering. This is my first stab at anything of this sort. I promise to try my very best to make it worth the trip for all of you. Vendors are starting to step up and donate prizes and swag (THANKS!). Nobody will go home empty handed!

To answer some FAQ's:

1. How long is the start going to be?....It'll be around 30', no less than 25'. Most racers should be able to manage 4 good pushes. Everyone will start inside a 3' square box. Your two front wheels MUST be inside the box when starting. The starter beam will be aligned with the front line of the box. For those of you in the know, just like cyberslalom but with a longer push start.

2. The course?....I haven't set THE course yet. I plan to set and mark it the weekend before the race. Cone spacing will range from 6.5' to 12'. It will be tightish, but not too difficult. I'll try to post a pic or two after it's set.

3. What is the "twist" mentioned on the contest calender?....Ok, I'll budge a little....here's a tip: Practice running gnarly offsets clean and you'll have no worries.

4. Lodging?....I've listed 3 hotels on the contest calender. They are all a couple of miles from the race site. Rates are very reasonable.

Please post further questions here.

Looking forward to a fun day of cone rippage with the SE crew!...come gitcha some

UPDATE

It was sunny and 70 degrees here earlier today, so my better half and I went out to Fred's and set THE course. The start distance will be a non-issue. The first 2/3rds of the course is very technical and features a taste of everything. The end is a ballzout wigglefest. Cone spacing is 6.5'-12' as advertised. Unless your name is Hollien Barker Mitchell Mandarino etc., strategery :) and speed control will be the name of the game.....The course is 50 cones @ around 500'(that's a guess).

The bottom half of the hill is fairly well lit at night. For those of you coming down Saturday, a night session is in order. Hell, come down during the day on Saturday and get a head start running the full course!.....to be continued....

FRED'S
2815 Ga. Highway 257
Dublin, GA. 31021

E me if your up for a pre-race session.

Isn't Fred Home?

Is Fred's closed on Saturday day so we can run? Or is night the only option?

Posted: Mon Jan 02, 2006 3:57 pm
by Tom Thompson
Closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Light traffic in and out on Saturdays. Almost none on Sundays. That's why I picked Sunday for the race. The place is a distro center, not a store....

Yes, I skate there on Saturdays, no problem.....

The long range forecast has SUNDAY WARMER THAN SATURDAY. So Sunday I'm gonna come and skate KOG's course at Fred's. I'll probably wait til Noon to arrive. Want to give it plenty of time to warm up and no need to hit the interstate at the crack of dawn if I don't have to.

Anyone else up to a sesh?

Oh, if things change dramatically by Friday, then I'll switch from Sunday to Saturday or cancel if it looks like rain.

Wesley, I'll see you there on Saturday...or Sunday.

Marty and I checked out the hotel situation and Comfort Inn, though not the cheapest, has a full hot breakfast so we are planning on staying there. I talked with Keith yesterday and he was wondering where everyone was staying and thought it would be cool if we stayed in the same place.

Who's down for the Comfort? It's 49.95 plus 7.5% tax but has rooms with two queen size beds as opposed to 2 fulls in the other hotels.

.........and so it went in the "Great Battle to be Marion's Bitch" war. Soon the verbal assaults would switch to hand weapons and the on to the inevitable - pie throwing!

Ga. Tom's race in Dublin, Georgia is Sunday, January 15th. Sunday is kind of a bummer because it means you have to travel Sunday night to get home in time for work and school . . .

EXCEPT

Monday, January 16th is MARTIN LUTHER KING'S BIRTHDAY. That means it's a holiday. You can stay over Sunday night in Dublin or Savannah or Atlanta or wherever and drive home Monday.

C'mon down. It's an Outlaw Race, but The King Of Georgia is getting swag for prizes and the course and venue are absolutely PRIMO. The weather promises to be fabulous and warm and the only drawback is, well, it's a few hundred miles away.

Tom,

Being we have changed venues, will there be the opportunity to practice Saturday? Will the course be set & marked? Is the place cool for Saturday around 1, my planned arrival time?

Please let me know so I can adjust.

Marts - check your email. I think your mail.com address....

Ok, for those of you that didn't receive my email:

Saturday session is on....might have to yield a bit to groundskeepers that normally work on Saturday, but since it's a holiday weekend, maybe not....

Ga. Tom,
Thanks for the awesome day of skating. It was a blast. You know you are a special bro to me and am proud to call myself one of your friends.

Keith Hollien: Big shout out to "Coach" Keith Hollien for all of his advise today for the DHB's in a attendance. Thank you so much. You are awesome. Look forward to you being back on the board! Thanks for sharing your stoke.

Bobby Mandarino: Dude, you freakin flew...No words to describe it better. Thanks for the stoke fuel bro! Secret message: Dude, the Kona wheels are turning in my head!...oh yeah..the wheels are turning!

Marty Schaub: Bro, you are my traveling partner and teammate for life! You brought it to the courses today! Great to see you skating so well! Congrats on winning the Fatboy!

Ron Olson: To me the best thing that came out of today was seeing you back on the board after the Hobby crash. YOu are also my traveling partner and teammate for life. Tell Molly how much we all appreciated her endless cone heading today! She's a gem!

Tucker: Dude, you shredded it today! Just shredded it. Thanks for all of the timing work! Great to see you riding so well.

Evan Mac T: Thanks for driving and getting us home safe and all of your MacGiver work on the way down! It was great spending time with you and your new bride, Stephanie! You are going to kill it in slalom...been at it less than 2 months and already smoked it! Watch out slalom world. Your stories had us laughing all the way home!

Mr. Surly aka Carl Crieder or is it the other way around: I don't think I have laughed as hard in a long time. Traveling with you this weekend was the best! Way go out there and go for it on the courses.

Jim Mather: You got a bunch of stoke and dude, to see you going hard every time was another highlight. Look forward to riding with you again soon!

66: Dude, I would give my right (fill in the blank) to be as cool as you!

Thanks also goes to all of the great sponsors out there that support grassroots racing!

For those of you who were not able to make the trip you were missed. This crew is a special bunch of people.

NOTE: Bobby Mandarino, myself, and Tom Thompson all had our timing systems there today and we ran them simultaneously. I am sure Bobby will post more detail but it was great to compare three different timing systems at the same time on the same course.

Tom, thanks for everything....and that goes all the way back to that morning we shook hands on Gran Ellen Drive back in September of 2002. You are the KING OF GEORGIA!

There are maybe a handful of folks around the country that know Wesley Tucker is a fast slalom skateboarder, yesterday he finally proved it to the rest of you all. Congratulations Wes on a great showing.

Trade Street in February? BRRRRRR.....see you at Kona in March ;)

A Few From Dublin

Posted: Mon Jan 16, 2006 2:14 pm
by Wesley Tucker
A few from Sunday's 1st Shamrock Outlaw Slalom Race in Dublin, Ga.

Image
It was amazing how quickly the tranquil Jaw Ja
countryside was altered into this vision of mayhem
in less than 15 minutes.

Image
Those Jaw Ja guys . . . whadda' ya' gonna do?

Image
Ron took a nasty head bonk at Hobby Park in December
and Sunday was his first time back on a board. He was
looking good and will definetely be back up to speed
by the time of the second Southeastern Outlaw at Athens
in February

Image
Molly Olsen watches Dad rip the not-so-straight course.
Molly was great to travel down from Atlanta with the Old Man
and spend the day volunteering doing a great job coneheading.

Image
Marty came out Saturday and braved the elements
to get in a few lines before Sunday's event. He put down
some really fast runs.

Image
My favorite pic of the day!! Carl "Mr Surly" Creider is just taking
up slalom and is really stoked. Sunday's outlaw was his first really
tight race and he never let up.

Image
Another one of the DHB's, Evan "Mac-T' St. Clair just put his slalom
board together in the past few days and got it dialed in just in time.
Evan posted the faster time in the tight slalom and Marion got the fast
time the straight. The trip home probably had some interesting discussions!

Image

Image

Image
Marion made the transition from big hills to tight fast stuff and was pushing
his line all day.

Image
And still . . .
Image
. . . The King . . .

. . . Of Georgia!

How's This For Intensity?

Posted: Mon Jan 16, 2006 2:28 pm

After I resized the pic for the Web, I realized that y'all can't really see what
I saw in Photoshop. Is Carl intense or what? Who said there's no grind in Slalom?

Image

They don't call him "Mr. Surly" for nothing!

This pic wasn't taken in any of the following places:

Georgia
North Carolina
Florida

The correct answer gets a free dose of epsom salts and some Rock n' Rye Whiskey.

STOKED!

Thanks to GA Tom for putting this on, I had a great time out there.

GASS crew.. you guys always rock. Nice to see Ron O back in the saddle.
PS: Marty has the scariest back foot in the world!

Want to thank Keith Hollien for coaching us newbies, with your help
and suggestions, I dropped a full second between runs.....stoked!
You are a scholar and a gentelman.

Thanks a ton for coming out Bobby. 9 seconds? What the...? Great to
watch and learn from the pros.

Wes Tucker rocked it out there fellas, and dont you soon forget it.
Thanks for the tips and the pictures too. I should start wearing a wrestling mask, ya think?

Nice to meet you Rick. Dude you go FAST!

Marion, Evan, Steph: great hanging with you and laughing it up. Evan ruled
it, rodeo arm and all! Karr kills. DHB freekin' rules!

Jim, my TACH brethren ... go get some!! You stayed in the game no matter what!
Killin' it. We have to start setting up some super-tight practice sessions ... it's on!

Personal Kudos, then I must go and throw up, hehe....

Karr on the ATTACK!
<img src="http://members.aol.com/wtucker567/SO-8-Marion.jpg"/>

This crew was ready to skate yesterday! I showed up at the office park at around 9:30 thinking I'd set up everything before everyone arrived. To my surprise, most everyone was already there....chalking the course, setting up timers, etc....COOL! I was able to sit and eat my breakfast without feeling rushed! Good omen

Mandarino and Karr wanted to set up their trakmate timers to check accuracy. As it turns out, I think all three(mine is a XR3000) were fairly consistent in time differential. I also have to add....Mine performed flawlessly for the entire 6.5 hours :-)

Kudos to Bobby for talking me into implementing 2 double penalty cones into the tight slalom course. I had originally planned on doing this at the Fred's course(my original venue for this race). After losing that spot, I just sorta put the idea on the back burner.....As it turns out, the "dpc's" did come into play in the race for 2nd/3rd place. Marty criddled one during his fastest run. If he hadn't, he would've probably beaten me. Of course, his raw time would've been just a tad slower, but still most likely faster than mine....I like what DPC's add to slalom racing...

Marty - great racing yesterday bro! We were breathing down each other's neck all day long....damn it was fun!

Wesley Tucker easily gets the "Step Up" award for yesterday. You just had to be there.....and thanks for bringing your "outlaw race package" :) All your help at these races make life soooo much easier.

DHB's - I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. Without you guys, would the slalom/downhill stoke in the southeast be what it is? NO it wouldn't, simple as that.

Keith - I know it was hard for you to NOT race bro. Keep up the rehab and it won't be long. Big thanks for making the drive up and coaching the newbies along. Thanks to you, everyone got faster and more confident as the day went along.

Ronnie - it was great to see you back on board and charging! Please thank Molly for all her help coneheading, etc. She's a sweetheart.

The Mighty 66 - it made my day when you rolled up to the hill. You my friend, are always welcome in my slalom world.
