What would be the fastest route to Statesville from Washington DC?

95 South to 85 to 40 or 66 to 81 to 77

My guess is 95 south to 85 to 40

WesT? Marion?

Ohmster,

If you're leaving from Alexanderia (that's where you live, right?) then I-95 to Richmond is quickest by just a few miles. I did the math back in June when Parsons came down and for him the I-81 route was quickest, but for you it's I-95. It's 357 miles by way of Richmond and 370 by way of Falls Church and Front Royal. So I guess it's a question of about 10 minutes and whether or not you want to look at pine trees on flat land on I-95 or pine trees in the mountains on I-81?

Mike,

One other thing. Don't forget that on Sunday the trip home will be SHORTER. We move 40 miles closer to Washington when we race at Hobby Park in Winston Salem.

Met Marion in Statesville on Saturday at the race site and took some pictures. Here ya go.

First pic is looking down the street from about where the starting line will be:

Next up is looking up from the interesection just beyond the finish line:

Next is looking up at the starting line about 1/2 down:

Next is the intersection at the bottom after the finish line:

And lastly is a closeup of the road surface itself:

I stepped it off and it's about 150 paces from the startline to the intersection at the bottom. It's right in the downtown area of Statesville off the main street.

From where Marion wants to put the Start Ramps to the Finish line is 330 feet. I measured it out with my rolling scale Sunday afternoon.

Just go to the list of topics here in the DOWN SOUTH forum. Every title that has the words "Hobby Park" in it has pics. There's also a link to a video in one of them.

Cfav,

Everybody BETTER be booking HERE:

Hotel Name: Best Western AAA property
Hotel Rate: $49.95 includes full breakfast
Hotel Location: I-77 Exit 49-A in Statesville
Hotel Phone Number: 704-881-0111

If you go to Priceline or another site, it'll tell you this hotel has no rooms available for that weekend. That's because they are blocked off in anticipation of US booking them! Also, the Stateville Visitors and Convention Bureau is a cash sponsor for the race and the Best Western is heavily involved, so let's return the favor and give 'em our money. Call, tell them you're with the DHBs and the rate is assured. It took me about three minutes to book my space last week. Also, a registration table will be manned at this motel Friday afternoon to take care of all the releases and other nonsense that goes along with participating in a race. So why not stay where you have to go anyway? (How's that for a sales motto?)

Oh, there's another EXCELLENT reason to get a room at this motel NOW, but I'll let the promotions staff with the DHBs announce the reasons.

Just when you thought the Dixie Cup Weekend couldn't get any better we have gone and done it again!

***NEW EVENT ADDED 9/28/2005***

Fastest time counts. Cone Penalty To be determined race day.

This is a fun warm up race with limited small prizes to be awarded on Saturday Night at the Awards Dinner/Party.

The Freak Brothers from Chicago will be hosting on behalf of the DHB Crew an Outlaw Race Friday night on the frontage road adjacent to the Best Western (hotel where racers will be staying). To All Those Concerned:

This hill is very similar to where we raced this year in Mississippi. Surface is comparable, maybe Morland Drive is just a tad steeper. Just like the Friday Night Outlaw in Athens, the DHBs have set a course and painted it in already for November 4.

Oh, for another comparison, the hill is lit pretty much to the same degree as the P&R in Gaithersburg . . . when all the street lights at the P&R are operating!

Cfav,

I always make a GREAT first impression!!
It's the second one where everything starts going to hell.

Oh, I can't impress enough just how convenient this motel is to the outlaw race. Imagine if a motel sets where the UPS depot is on Trade Street. I think Marion's estimation of 300 yards is WAY TOO FAR. After we were coming off the hill at the finish line Sunday night, I was just cruising on out and finally slowed down about 50 feet from the turn-in to the motel parking lot. There will be no need for anyone staying at the Best Western to take much of anything to the race site. If you need to make an equipment change or get something your forget, just go back to your room. It's about that close.

Oh, one other thing. I'll have my cones in the UAV, (100 red, 100 white.) If you want to spare yourself bringing cones all the way from Chicago, that'll be cool. I'll have plenty with me. Also, I've got a small folding table for the timer. Of course, I've got all the other stuff, too: chalk, plenty of duct tape, leaf blower, yadda, yadda, yadda. If you and CNova travel together, don't think you have to pack EVERYTHING needed to put on an Outlaw. I got it covered. If you bring the hardware for the timer, the rest is done.

Dude, you are going to want to bring a DH board for the downhill. I will be riding a Big Red X. There will be Landyachtz drop downs, Subsonics, and Bozi Mad Bombers on the hill. It's unlimited push and based on a GPS (which is not particularly accurate) Evan (local DHB) went 48.8 mph on it at one of our last jams. I think it is actually not that fast because it is so short but I covered 550 feet in 9.8 secs and part of that was uphill to the finish line. I think the hill is easily capapable of 45 mph and more with the right set up. Air braking and carving out in the run out is a must.

Or the

"Everybody down here marries their 14 yr old cousin, it's no big deal" race?

or

We could make it a "NASCAR" slalom race, but you could only have left turns

I've got more but I don't want to offend anybody. I'm afraid I might wake up in the middle of the night with a cone burning on my front lawn.

We gotta clear customs somewhere so we might have to go to charlotte and drive up to statesville. Does Charlotte have a rental centre near the airport?

Rental Car Info for Statesville:
Go to www.enterprise.com and reserve your car online at the Statesville, North Carolina location (Garner Bagnal Blvd).

Once you have your reservation (making it online is cheaper), call them at (704) 871-8900 and let them know when you will be arriving and that you need to be picked up...they will come to the airport and pick you up. Their office is only about 500 yards from the Best Western.

If you are leaving on Sunday you will need to ask them how to do the car drop off. They may actually have a drop at the airport.

This is the best Enterprize rental car office I have ever dealt with..the guys are great.

Let me know if you need other information.

Camping for the Dixie Cup

Post by William Tway » Wed Oct 05, 2005 8:25 pm

Marion,

What are your thoughts on camping in the Statesville/Winston Salem area? Are there any good sites you could recommend? Are the early Nov. temps too cold?

Thanks,

It looks like Lake Norman is about 10 miles away.

Tway! You da man bro! There is as KOA Campground that is only 4 miles from the exit where Best Western is on I-77.

KOA of Statesvillle
http://www.koa.com/where/nc/33157/

Another option would be Vanhoy Family Campground/Vanhoy Farms. Its north of Statesville about 15 miles in Union Grove. This is the site of the famous Union Grove Fiddlers Convention. It's beautiful up there and is about 50 minutes or so from Hobby Park.

http://www.vanhoyfarms.com/

Also, between here and Winston-Salem there are a couple of campgrounds on I-40 (which would be real convenient to both Statesville and Hobby Park. One is called Lake Myers Resort...it is in Mocksville.

Lake Myers Resort
http://lakemyersrv.com/

Lake Norman State Park that is cool as heck and in Troutman, NC and is about 20 minutes from downtown Statesville and about an hour from Hobby Park. This would be more primative and you would need to see if their shower facilities and bath facilities are still open that time of year. They have a cool mtn. bike trail there called the Itusi that some of my friends have been building over the years.
Here is the website again:

Lake Norman State Park
http://www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/lano/home.html

As far as tempertures that time of year, the nights are cool (probably low 40's) and we can usually get our first frost about that time of the year but the days are spectacular! Normally it is very dry here and that is what we are banking on.

This is the options off the top of my head. I will look and see. You know where Hobby is in relationship to Statesville so choose accordingly. The KOA is the closest and fairly cheap. Vanhoy Farms is freakin cool as hell. The State Park would be the cheapest but the furtherest away from Hobby. Lake Myers is a bunch of old fart Good Sam RV'ers but the facilities are nice and it is between here and Winston.
Call me if you need more info 704 657 9531..... We are also working on the possibility of some free camping locales but are still waiting on some info.

Directions From Charlotte Airport To Best Western Statesvill

Post by Marion Karr » Thu Oct 13, 2005 5:12 am

For all of you flying into Charlotte Douglas International Airport:

Out of the airport look for directions to I-77 North.

Take I-77 North To Exit 49-A.

Turn Right at top of ramp on to US 70/Garner Bagnal Blvd.

Turn Right at Waffle House (1/10 of a mile or so) Morland Drive

Best Western is on the left behind the Waffle House...

How freakin easy is that?
