DC SUMMER OUTLAW SLALOM SERIES

After finally getting a break from a terrible winter, it is time for another season of slalom racing in DC.

Race Schedule:
Saturday April 26th – Cancelled due to rain
Sunday May 25th - Cancelled due to rain
Saturday June 27st - See Results
Saturday July 12th - Gaithersburg P&R
Saturday August 16th
Saturday September 13th

I am still finalizing race locations and times. I want to try to utilize Seneca Creek as much as possible. And of course continue racing at the Park and Ride.

The plan is to keep entry fees at $0. However, if I can schedule a few races at Seneca Creek then there will be an entry fee of about $2 per racer.

Events will include:
1st Event - Longboard Slalom
2nd Event - Open Slalom
3rd Event - Spec Class Racing

Series points will be awarded for each individual event as well as overall points for competing in multiple events. Points are awarded based on the FCR point system.

By this point everyone knows that these races are 100% outlaw. Skate at your own risk and pads are recommended but not required.

Please email me with questions or directions. Everyone is welcome. Courses will be set beginner friendly.

Looking forward to another great Summer Series.

Ummmmm, Isn't August 23 'da Farm? And the following week is the Georgia State Championships. (See the "Grass Roots Racing" forum. Tway and 66 made announcements a couple of months ago.)

Oh, and also La Costa is on the "tentative" FCR schedule for July 12. I don't see any reason why an East Coast and West Coast event can't be scheduled for the same day, but I'd hate to see some of the DC Hardliners miss an Outlaw race because that's the one weekend they planned on heading West.

Sorry, Brian. I know you hate me.

Paris race might happen May 24. Grueningen is scheduled for June 21-22. I have no problem with missing a race or two. With so many slalom races in the world and only several “season” weekends West-East and US-EU scheduling conflicts can’t be avoided.

California has already scheduled two races on the same day with two major East Coast races that have been announced well in advance: April 12 and July 5.

Ugh...your right. Sorry Tway...August 16th will be the Summer Series Final.

Any other screw ups?

I would like to host an outlaw event at the wife’s family summer lake house in PA. The hill rules and the location is a bit remote but worth the drive. Killer lake, boats, camping and fishing. I posted a few pics last year of the hill but have since lost them. Maybe we can work it into the DC schedule or just run it as Da Lake 1.0.

Tway,
In what town in PA would Da Lake event be held?

by William Tway
Hi Kevin, The lake is located off HWY 84 East of Scranton. I believe the exit is #8 near the Lords Valley in the Poconos. It's a very remote area with lots of hills and the asphalt is fresh with no crowns. I hope I can get permission and you can come along with a host of others.

Brian - can we consider that schedule final?

I'm stoked, I'm ready to race (once I get some boards)....

Not to be a pain, but can everyone make the April 26th race in DC and then get up to Connecticut in time for Jar Jar's skate clinic on Sunday? I know several people volunteered to teach and skate at the school that day.

It'll certainly make for a busy weekend of skating!

(Parsons is really starting to hate my guts. I can see it in his eyes!)

wesley - yes it will, but who needs sleep that weekend. I think I am the only one that will be at the first race that will be at henry's clinic.....

it WILL be a LONG weekend!

Gees, I would really like to attend at least one of your area races.

I've raced once now at WLAC and FCR Elsinore. I'm over the gitters now and would really like to experience the East racing scene.

JG is terribly responsible for helping me get this site on the road and he and TK have a big percentage of my own race knowledge invested.

I really really want to get out there and mix it up with you guys. I'll figure out a way, may not be until the fall or next year, but I am DEFINATELY headed your way.

I would come now but things like re-building my financial and personal life after a divorce and other distractions prevent my focus from being so broad as to travel on a plane for a slalom race.

But like James Brown says, "I'm commin, I'm commin baby!"

See you one day hopefully sooner than later.

Adam, try to make the Farm race.
Tway, try to do the Lake race. Please.

Let's say I started thinking about making it. I honestly would not be able to afford a rental car, a hotel and eats more than going to the grocery store. The plane ticket would consume my savings for the trip. I would have to start saving like right now.

Is there a kind soul willing to take me under their wing as my sponsor? (p/u and d/o airport and a shower/roof)

If I can have this sort of support, then I can begin to entertain the thought...

Will work for food?

I give those guys under the bridge money sometimes if I have it. Now I know how it feels to want. It's not a good feeling.

Anyway, I subscribe to reality, this is mine.

Plankk-R will cover my and your entree fees. You will be picked up/dropped from/at the airport. Airfare shouldn’t be more then $150-$200 (max). Food and stay are free. Have your tent ready (edited part)- many people slept in tents at the Tway's Farm.

Done deal. See you there!

Adam,

If you make one race, make it Da Farm. The hill is perfect, the racers span all levels of ability, Tway's place is relaxing and comfortable, and it won't cost you a thing (other than plane fare).

Vlad's offer to hook you up reflects the mood of the event. Don't miss it, everyone will make you feel at home.

Vlad,

Do you consider Mississippi on the east coast, or were you referring to the New Jersey event?

I couldn't find any event other than Dave Dale's listed on July 5th.

Please let me know if I am missing something.

Missippissi must be deep-deep South. This West-East thing got to me. It’s now South-West thing. Are you coming to support this Grass-root slalom event in the South, Jack?
I am.

July 05th is my bad, unless something has been changed. If anyone else recalls any race being scheduled for July 05th, please speak out or forever hold your piece.

There is another race scheduled on the Gathering weekend in San Francisco, California. We so-o-o hoped Maysey would come, but now he’s registered for the Californian race instead. How about Paul? Paul still coming?

So, what seems to be a problem- my inaccuracy or too many races and too little time?

Vlad.

PS. Just a reminder: the Swiss race is on May 21-22. If I recall correctly, according to the International Slalom Skateboard Association, the presence of 6 nations at a slalom race qualifys it as a “major” event, while 9 or more - enough to call it “World’s”. Don’t miss this “World” slalom event! So far, 10 nations have registered. Only about half of them will likelly make it to Morro Bay (based on the results of previous years).

If I had the opportunity to race on my home coast or fly to the opposite coast, I would probably choose to stay and race on my home coast. The West Coast race on the same weekend as the Gathering does not change anything. The Gathering is the essence of East Coast slalom racing. Everybody knows this.

There are more races being held this year in more parts of the country (world) by more different groups of skaters. Find an event, show up and race. It’s all-good.

The schedule for the DC Summer series if final. I also plan on going to CT for the skate camp on Sunday the 27th so I don’t think this will be a big issue for the majority of the skaters that ride in DC.

Also, only Vlad and WesE are defiantly planning on going to Switzerland in May. And Vlad will be so far ahead by that time no one will be able to catch him anyway if he skips a race. And WesE will probably show up late to the starting line and get DQ’ed several times before we get that far into the season so he will be out of contention. J

I would like to announce that I beat WesE in cyber slalom last night. My best time 9.3 on a Fibreflex Response with ACS 651s and cambrias. Given a little more practice I am sure I can break 9 seconds. I only say this because Wes beat me Monday night by about 2/10th. I could only get to about 9.7. Wes is consistently in the 9.5s.

Let's make this very simple for everyone:

I am the DETERMINATOR of all that is or is not EAST COAST Slalom.

If I can drive there in one day, it's EAST COAST. I can drive to Jackson in 11 hours: EAST COAST.

I can drive to St. Louis in 19 hours: EAST COAST.

I can drive to Chicago in 21 hours: EAST COAST.

I can drive to 'da Farm, Boston, DC and of course Athens, Ga and anywhere in Florida all within the span of a single day: EAST COAST.

I cannot drive to Colorado in one day: Not EAST COAST.

I don't know about Texas. Eddie, schedule a race down your way and after I make the trip, we'll decide whether it's EAST COAST or not.

Also, be it known that I CAN drive to all these particular locations in one day. That in no way implies or determines that I WILL do so.

Thank you. I hope my munificence and humble grandeur settles this matter.

I have no problem with missing a race or anyone scheduling races on the same day with other races. Unless we have two World Championships on the same day

The vast majority of the regular DC racers are not going to the Swiss race. Why should Brian reschedule a DC race because of it?

This information was left here for our distinguished guest from California to emphasize the importance of attending this event by the world-level US slalomers. Most of whom reside in California.

Vlad.

PS. I put PeeVees on my plank last night and got another Cyber Record.

Jack,
I’m sure Vlad meant the October 18th races.

Brian,
John Gilmour and Vlad are the only ones definitely going Swiss. Remember, I am only going if you are. I guess that means I will probably be putting the funds towards Paris or a similarly-priced excursion instead.

Vlad,

If I wasn't doing the Bahne Cadillac SlalomCross I would be attending the Mississippi event. I have supplied Ricky with Bahne product for prizes for his race. I plan on attending the St. Louis race. Last year I raced in grass roots events in Gaithersburg and Colorado. I am also supplying product to Henry J's event and the Georgia State Championships.

Paul is still committed to attending the Gathering. He won't race in SF as he would hate losing to me.

According to the ISSA...that's nice.

I wasn't trying to stir up anything with my previous post.

Were you referring to me when you wrote:

"This information was left here for our distinguished guest from California to emphasize the importance of attending this event by the world-level US slalomers. Most of whom reside in California."

I do not recall posting anything along those lines.

Vlad, I am as tired of the east/west thing as you are. I think you are aware that the first person I asked to ride for Bahne was an east coaster...Brian Parsons.

“This information was left here for our distinguished guest from California to emphasize the importance of attending this event by the world-level US slalomers. Most of whom reside in California”

This is the information I left for you, Jack. And I called you a distinguished guest form CA. I hope there is no problem with that.

PS. Just a reminder: the Swiss race is on May 21-22. I gotta confirm that it’s going to be a true slalom comp, not the longboarder’s championships. I’ll let everyone know.

Vlad.

PS. Thanks for sponsoring Brian. He’s a great guy.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm thankful that there's ANY racing happening within a day's drive. Two years ago, I didn't even know slalom skateboarding still existed.
If I never raced anywhere but DC for the rest of my life, it would still be more than I ever expected.

I for one am counting my blessings.

We can only hope that there will be two, Vlad... Now that someone on the West coast has decided to put on a multi-sport gravity event that includes speedboarding, streetluge, as well as slalom, during the same time as the G3, I bet Chris Chaput will change his plans. How unfortunate it is that the NCDSA ContestCalendar is being ignored this year.

Looks like no slalom racing tomorrow…Sunday is a possibility…so we will move the Outlaw race to Sunday. I really hate to loose a weekend if at least one of the days has a possibility of dry weather.

Long board practice will start at noon at the Gaithersburg P&R. This later start time hopefully will provide for more drying time if needed. If anyone wants to call me for an update on the hill conditions you can reach me on my mobile #703-901-5167.

Call or email if you need directions.

Brian, what is the field of racers looking like since there are two other races this weekend? Trocadero and St.Louis. I know Vlad is in Paris and Dillon is in St. Louis. Noah is 50/50. Have you spoke with Kimble? LBK? 13? If it is a thin crown I vote for a session. The tighter the better. I have a feeling Breck will be tight on Sunday! Need to dial in my boards!

Well I made the trip to the P&R on Sunday only to be greeted with an empty wet parking lot.

What a let down after a 3.5 hour drive. So my son Aaron and I had some lunch and decided to take a little trip westward before heading back to Norfolk/Virginia Beach.

The one funny thing we found out once we traveled a few minutes or so west of Gaithersburg was we found the roads dry and it hadn't rained. We actually could see the sun! We eventually headed back south and east and we later ran into more rain.

I just hope that this weather trend will end some time soon.

Also just to mention the City of Virginia Beach is now hashing out the plans to build maybe one of the biggest skateparks on teh east coast. Virginia Beach's plan is to build it next to the city's Soccer complex. This park is going to be built along with a proposed smaller park at the old Mount Trashmore site. I have also noticed that along with some environmental renovations that is now underway at Mount Trashmore that it appears to me some survey stakes that run along the one side of the hill where the old soap box derby track used to be. I have heard that they are possibly rebuilding the old soap box derby track. If this is so then this will be a great location to have slalom races in the the future.

I was talking with Paul Dunn at the Gathering and he even mentioned that he was at a slalom race at the old Mount Trashmore Soap Box derby track back in the 1980s??? I hope that the city is rebuilding the old track as it would give us guys in the tidewater area a hill to hit. I used to skate their back in the mid 1970s and it used to be a blast there.

The next Outlaw race is on the 21st. I know Ohm and myself have to do family duty this weekend to make up for our trip out west.

I am still on a Rocky mountian high. Can't wait to race again.

Ohm,you rule. But never again will I ever hit another cone.

For the record. Ohm beat me Sunday in Breck. I beat him to the line in both lanes but he beat me on cones. He schooled me on race strategy.
