Man, I hate news like this. Did anybody know Robert Henry Wooldridge Jr. of Silver Spring, MD who died skateboarding on Sunday 7/16/06 when hit by a car? If you do or don't, dedicate your next skate session to this fellow skateboarder. Be careful out there!

Below is the article from the The Gazette on Monday, July 17, 2006:

******************************

Police are seeking witnesses or anyone with information about a fatal collision Saturday afternoon between a man on a skateboard and a car in the Hillandale neighborhood of Silver Spring.

Responding to a report of a pedestrian collision in the 10500 block of Sweetbriar Parkway, police found Robert Henry Wooldridge Jr., 44, of the 10500 block of Sweetbriar Parkway pinned under a 2001 Volvo driven by Richard Preston Price, 57, of the 1800 block of Kimberly Road in Silver Spring, according to a news release from county police.

Wooldridge was taken to Prince George’s General Hospital, Cheverly, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, according to the release.

Police say it appears that Wooldridge had been skateboarding on private property, but then rolled into the street and in front of the Volvo.

The collision remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Call police at 301-840-2435.

Yes, Dave. Robert was a co worker of Nanette's at AOL for several years.

Clearly this is a tragedy.

That's why we need big skate parks built and runs for downhill and slalom too. I may have met that skater last year.

Below is the Obituary for Robert Wooldridge Jr., published in the Washington Post on 7/18/2006. From the photo of him in the Post, he was a handsome person. He apparently also was a great family man, and friend to many. May he rest in peace and strength be given to his wife, children, and extended family.

ROBERT HENRY WOOLDRIDGE, JR.

Robert Henry Wooldridge, Jr. of Silver Spring, MD, known as "Bob" to colleagues, but always "Bobby" to his family and many longtime friends, died on Saturday, July 15, 2006, from injuries suffered in an accident.

He was born in Oklahoma on New Year's Eve 1961, the only son of a career Army officer, and spent part of his childhood in Germany. By teenage years, his family had settled in Maryland, and he attended Meade High School and then the University of Maryland, where he graduated with a history degree in 1986. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and, though he couldn't play an instrument, an alternative rock bank called "The Front."

His time as lead vocalist would serve him well later in singing his children to sleep. He loved American history and was a voracious reader, and both combined with his affinity for writing during a decade as a writer and editor with Time-Life Books. He then joined AOL as a programming director, developing the online podcast "Sports Blogger Live." He moved last month to the World Championship Sports Network as a Managing Editor.

Bobby threw himself into work, life, and most importantly, family. He was best friend to his wife, and he enjoyed nothing more than cheering his son at a soccer match or swim meet or taking him and his daughter to a Washington Nationals game. His gentle sense of humor generally was directed at himself, but often had others laughing heartily at their own foibles.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie Wooldridge, and children, Robert Henry Wooldridge III and Linley Wooldridge; his parents, Robert and Beverly Wooldridge, Sr. of Cape Cod, MA; a sister and her family, Wendy and Bob Boyer and children, Sarah and Sammy, of Baltimore, MD; parents-in-law, Roland and Jaclyn Leimbach of Silver Spring and sister-in-law, Jennifer Raymond, and her daughter, Chelsea, of Silver Spring.

He was deeply loved by all who knew him, and his family asks relatives, friends and neighbors to share memories and tears on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at HINES-RINALDI FUNERAL HOME, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20904. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 20 at 11 a.m. at Church of Our Saviour, 1700 Powder Mill Rd., Silver Spring, MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), 2001 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Suite 209, Arlington, VA 22202.
