After the slalom racing at G-burg is over, head on down to help instruct the All Girl Longboard Skateboard Session #3. We end up running a head to head slalom race for the women. Past instructors have included Brian Parsons, WesE, Slappy, John Dillon, & Tim Cowan (my cousin & yet another skater in the extended Riordon family).

EVENT: Learn how to Longboard Skateboard with Surfrider Foundation members. Loaner boards and pads provided by EastCoast Board Co. Start off with the basics, move on to carving, then end the night doing drop knee turns and slaloming through some cones.

It feels good to be called out-- almost like a *sniff* regular...

unfortunately, my french teenage cousins are in town and they want to go to Balto to see the tattoo museum and AVAM. Looks like the weather may suck, too. Sure does tonight.

Man, I haven't been out in ages, and I'm not even working.

On the other hand, if anyone is up for practice in the week when my cuz are gone, there is a pretty great parking lot next to my new house in Northwest, right near the tennis courts of Rock Creek Park off of Hamilton.

Or, I also really really want to hit CHaco or Landsdowne at some point soon when there is less moisture.

I might come to the racetrack weather permitting.

Nino... The Gaithersburg Park and Ride (The Park and Race) parking lot is in the southwest "corner" of the intersection of I-270 and Maryland Rt. 124 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. There are lots of different ways to get there, depending on what direction you're coming from, but if you find the I-270 exits for Rt. 124, get on 124 and look around for a few seconds, you can't miss it.

It may not matter tomorrow anyway, but I didn't want your question to be ignored. Can you say "tropical"?

bowie stadium is also showcasing the Trash and Jam this sat and sunday, free demo with vert pros and music, but rain may stop all of the weekends events....

If we can plan to be done by 2pm, I think we can pull it off. And the chance of rain after 2pm is still only 40%. It’s up to Brian of course, but right now, I’m feeling positive about having the race.

Our DC Outlaw Staff Meteorologist, WesE has spoken. My hotel reservations are made. I'll be there early, with Brian's timer. If more people could show up earlier, it would help to get things moving.

Wow, I have no idea what the weather is going to do. Usually I like to make a decision by Friday morning but the weather sites all have different forecasts. I guess I will go with WesE’s forecasting abilities and say that the race is on for tomorrow. We will run it for as long as we have dry pavement.

Take 270 north from the DC Beltway (495). Go to Exit 10 (Clopper Road) Turn Right at traffic light at end of exit ramp. Go to the 2nd traffic light and turn right onto Quince Orchard Rd. Go to the 2nd traffic light on Quince Orchard and turn right into the P&R lot. We will be at the upper left corner.

There wont be any nova bombers at tomorrows race guys....Danny is in arizona and i have to go to baltimore for a funeral....Im especially bumbed because i set up my sector 9 good so its like a step below what franks is and depending on who was there i could almost gaurentee a podium in the gs...so whens the fall/winter series start? Because of marching band I have no more summer and wont be able to skate nearly as much as id like to and will have a competition every saturday for like a month and a half or so, so im a little sad but at least i get to play drums and i hope to see you guys at a session sometime soon....if i knew how to make a sad face itd be here....

Sorry I couldn’t be there. I really wanted to, but had to recover from the food poisoning that struck me last night.

Amazing, isn't it Martin? Brian Parsons... the incredible shrinking man. I think I saw his gut on a milk carton. He's a partially missing person. I wonder with whom one would file a partially-missing person report?

Ya know, when you watch Brian skate, he doesn't LOOK like he would be as fast as he is, but that boy (I can say boy, 'cause I'm older than him) freakin' rips!!
Also, he was putting on races when the FCR series was still in the planning stages.

Curt Kimbel said at the time something like "Everyone else is just talking, you're the only one actually putting on races".

And you will not meet a nicer dude than him at any slalom race in the country. Or world, for that matter.

i don't get off work till 5 PM, and i work in DC... just wondering, but how long will you guys be sessioning till?

Nino, the part of Van Dorn we are riding is in the Franconia/Alexandria area of VA. It’s just about too fast and scary, and with too much large-truck traffic, to be used as a slalom spot. Most of the time we go there just to bomb it. If you still want to join in on a session, let us know you are interested and we will send you a PM.

i'm down... where's the spot? would it be close to the metro, cuz that would be nice coming off work. if its not too far, i'll see if i can make it.

Sorry guys for being MIA for the last few weeks. Due to other obligations I cannot host a race in September. However I would like to propose the following dates for the……

DC Winter Outlaw Series

October 2nd – Park and Ride
October 30th – Banked Slalom at Landsdown
November 13th - Park and Ride
December 4th - Park and Ride
December 11th – Park and Ride/Rain Date
December 18th – Park and Ride/Rain Date

Please comment on this schedule.

Guys I am really sorry about being out of the loop lately. As most of you know if you want to have a race/practice session and need the timer just call me. It is available whenever anyone needs it.

I will be in the Outer Banks for the next two weekends. If anyone wants to come down and go surfing drop me a line.

Another thing.

To get back some of the stoke we may have lost over the summer. Let me hear some input as to how to make the races better. What do you guys like, what do you dislike.

Is 10am to early to start?

It seems like the last few races everyone has really liked the wide open longbaord courses and really disliked the technical courses.

The idea is to get back some of those 20+ racer events where everyone is satisfied.

How wide open should the longboard be

How tight should the technical courses be.


I would also like to propose that some of the DC area guys go up to some of Noahs spots in New Jersey and invite the New York,New Jersey, Penn and CT crowd and have a race in their hood. Let me know if there is a good weekend that would work for this.

I dislike goddamned silly rubber backstops that limit my crow hop. Whoever dreamed up that shit should have his balls put in a blender and forced to listen to the rhythm of a frisky puree'!

But, I love you, Man! :-P

By the way, I just scanned through the posts and I did not know I missed a race August 14. I was still an inpatient and had no clue y'all planned and held a race. Oh, well. So I missed two races: an Outlaw event and Da' Farm. Just more impetus to continue on my road to recovery.

Oh, Brian, just to let you know, you MISSED IT DUDE in Jaw Ja! It's just not a total East Coast experience without your cheery smile!

LB thoughts...
It seems to me that the Longboard race is the common newbie entry point, and should be continued. (I think I'm still at that newbie point.) The "run what you brung" seemed to re-infuse the fun. I did enjoy the head-to-head dual longboard race, but would discourage future double-elims for the LB. If the "run what you brung" evolves to a double-triple pump fest then maybe split into two classes by wheelbase, but run the same course. Or maybe ridiculous cone penalties.

HS thoughts...
I don't have many suggestions here. As a relative newbie, I sometimes cannot run the HS courses, but do not feel that the courses should be simplified to the point of boredom for the more experienced racers. I like it when we have a course that most can race, and the experienced racers can RACE.

Thoughts on time...
Feel free to negate my vote on this issue, as I live 5 miles from the P&R, but I think the 10 AM LB, followed by noonish HS works well.

ok... i like what we are doing but we need to have two courses setup at once. the dual lb is sick, but we should also have a ts course in the middle parking row setup. and i need help running the bankslalom i want to do. october is coming up and i want to be able to fit it into the slalom schedule.

I like the "sideshow" idea in the middle lane. There was a nice little course (or two!) set up there when they were running Ohm's course on TG4 eve. The middle lane should be used to complement whatever is happening on the main stage. During LB/GS make it tighter in the sideshow. When the main lanes are running HS/TS, set a wider course in the middle lane.

I set and chalked that wiggle-wonger at the Gathering. If you like the idea, then just DO IT. There's nothing really to discuss. Just maybe get there early and cone off that lane so no one parks up that row. Not like there's not enough parking around that place.

The only problem, though, is timing. It's fun to set a course to rip and practice on, but racing is another matter. As far as I know Brian has the only timing system in DC and it goes on the big course. So just figure out what you want to accomplish in the "short lane" and do it.

I think the other lane would just be something to have fun on not have to be timed.

“Sideshow” courses have always been encouraged (and often set/run) during outlaw races at the G-P&R. It’s always nice to have a course that people can “stay warm” on between duals or to practice on after being eliminated. You don’t need to prevent people from parking there though. Just chalk the course (which is not a bad idea anyway).
