DC Amature Race/Practice Series

This is a new DC-area slalom racing series to supplement the 2004 Spring-Summer DC Outlaw series.

Why?
Because many young guns are itching to race more often then the current DC Outlaw schedule can offer (grown-ups have families and other things...but only grown-ups understand that:)

Where?
Same place, Park and Ride, Gaithersburg, MD. Maybe different parks later on. RFK stadium is another good spot. The wind always works to one's advantage.

What?
3 formats. Longboard SL, Easy Hybrid Slalom, Fast&Technical Special Slalom. I'll set the courses and make sure everyone is happy with them. Everything is going to be easy to skate except for TechSpecialSL. Hybrid and Special Slalom course will be set side by side so that the timer could be efficiently utilized.

When?
On Saturdays, starting at 10 AM untill approximately 2 PM.

Brian Parsons was kind to offer his Trackmate timer (THANK YOU BRIAN). There will be no points in this racing series. Although I'll keep the records for those who are interested.

Full protection (elbow and knee pads, wrist guards and helmets) is a must.

Any help with running the series smoothly will be appreciated. Our regular jam practice format (with the timer) usually works pretty good. While someone skates, somebody esle puts his time down and resets the timer, while others reset the course on their way up.

I'll see you this Saturday weather permitting. Longboard SL begins at 10 AM.

PS. Special thanks to those who came out with suggestions. As to the previous title, enough is enough.

Looks like rain predicted for Saturday in DC. Vlad, you going to call off the practice? I'd hate to make a 4 hour drive up and not find anyone there.

Yes, the most trusted weather sourse on the web, www.weather.com, correctly predicts AM showers. I think it's not worth the risk and a 4-hour drive.

Last sat was really nice. First time Ive gotten to skate in a while, great GS/Longboard course Vlad set. Really nice being able to just keep running & practicing.

If Slappys up for this sat at P&R, Im sure people will be there.

Thanks guys for taking time to try to cover sat sessions for spring, great idea.

Who ended up with my cones after the last DC outlaw race, Brian, Wes?

No serious need for them, just checking.

I would like to practice on Saturday. I have plenty of cones (not Bozi's) but no timer. When you are as slow as I am not having a timer is a good thing! I'm sure if we all put our heads together we can come up with a few good courses.

We didn't have a timer set up last Saturday and it was fine. I tried to chase people down the course to see if I could gain on them. Worked well for me.

How about starting to practice around 11am?
If we can't get a timer, how about setting a few courses and riding like last week and then kick it up a notch...

We'll try the first Mid-Atlantic Slalom Cross race.

The timer is conveniantly located in McLean, on the way from the heart of NoVa to P&R. If I'm out of town, a pick up can be arranged. 10% chance that I'll be in town this weekend. Just like there's 10% chance of rain in Jackson, MS, according to the yesterday's report from the most trusted weather sourse on the web. By the way, Wes IS going to this race.

Pa Dan set couple on nice courses. Q was looking real fast on his new particleboard longboard!! Slappy didn't show.

A limo pulled up, I thought it might be the international porn, I mean slalom star Vladislav Popov, whoever it was left.

They are replacing some of the curbs at the Park and Race. They said they will be done this week but I thinking a good sweep will be in order before the next race.

I'm leaving for CA tomorrow (to race 30 straight 6ft cones) and coming back on Saturday at 6 AM to BWI. So, there's plenty of time to get home, get some rest and be at P&R around Eleventeen O'clock.

Slappy, if you can, please pick me up from McLean on your way to MD.

Maybe Ohmster will crawl out this weekend?

Thanks Andy. I'll do my best. This is a night time race and from our Walker Ln experiences night-time = plus 0.3-0.5 seconds on a sub 7-second 40-cones at 6 ft course. Plus, this is a big hill, not Walker Ln.

I've already broken 6 seconds on 30 6 ft cones on flat when practicing French Cyber at RFK. Maybe it's easier on flat...

I'm stoked that Atilla is doing this retro slalom format. Jim Korten is coming. One little CA race...one huge... ect ect ect

As of last night I had the go ahead to take a work trip to LA in time to make the Bicknell race. This morning they cancelled it so I'll have to sit at home and cry while you guys are gunning for the sub 6 sec run. Damn this would have been cool. Give em hell.

vlad...go get 'em, I know you can do this with your eyes closed. I wish i could give you one of my custom Roe decks, it would be bloody perfect for this....but a 17" plank will be just fine too, especially if they have a ramp.

Vlad, I could be wrong, but something tells me that experience from last year's DCDC slalom might prove valuable. You were there, weren't you?That 15th St hill is definitely one of the pitchier slalom hills I've ever seen raced, and might be nearly as steep as Bicknell. I looked at Bicknell the last time I was out there, but was sick and in a hurry, so I've kind of forgotten it. It seemed really short and really steep at the time, but that was my impression before I saw racing on the DCDC hill.

If Korten shows and if he has any of his old skills left, he could be formidable. I'm just hoping you bring home a few trophy hides while you're out there.

The hill is fast! We never skate anything like that. I'll get a pair of (real) TS trucks and learn to wiggle before going back here. It was certainly worth the trip!

It was a big "small-scale" race. The vibes were good.

Sorry to disappoint anyone in DC with my placement.

Andy, Ohm was faster then me on the straight course in DC last year. All I've ever had was a pumping set up and it's just not IT for the BIG hills where wiggling is more important. I've learned a lot from Evan's and Richi's TS setups.

To another friend of mine. To be honest with you, I "played" with Ohm in MS because he likes playing this game

; there was no game with Jack Smith. He (and his big-wheel inverted-board set-up) was indeed fast and made me work on both runs 100%. I'm surprised there were no other similar set-ups at that race.

Chaput's on vacation...bummer. I go so far far avej and no Chaput here!

When looking for an Internet cafe I stopped by a Verizon store and asked them where I could find one in LA. They told me "to go online and find it". And...they didn't laugh when I did.

Most people I talk to in LA have an accent.

It's beautiful here. Maybe I'll move here instead of Boston.

See you Saturday if I don't pull another Gilmour and get me another free trip across the US...or anywhere in the world (I did it in MS - 3 hours of waiting for the next flight =$400...das ist hou I got here

Slappy set a soopper TS - like 4 ft on center - course and we skated it twice or something like that before hitting the Irish pub nearby.
