Even though this is not be a pure skateboard slalom topic, it is related to slalom skateboarding. The Washington DC Chapter of Surfrider has held two banked slalom races, three longboard/vintage skateboard day events, a pool contest, and a street contest. Look for posting of future events and activities sponsored by the Washington DC Surfrider Chapter.

Surfrider Foundation Background Information:

http://www.surfrider.org

Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots organization represented by 35,000 members and 60 local chapters in the U.S.

The Washington DC Chapter of Surfrider is a landlocked chapter with no beach to call its’ own; however, it is all water and the Washington DC area watershed is part of the hydrological cycle that ultimately leads to the ocean.

The Washington DC Chapter of Surfrider boasts over 350 members. A core group of these members meet every month to plan out various chapter activities that include environmental work, educational programs, outreach, and fundraising. Thus the Washington DC Chapter is doing whatever it can to promote Surfrider Foundation’s organizational principles of research, education and conservation.

Because the Washington DC Chapter can’t always make it out to the beach, we also support educational programs such as the "Snowrider Project", a program to bring environmental respect to the mountains. The Chapter also reaches out to potential surfers and non-surfer members in the Washington DC area by promoting snowboarding and skateboarding events.

Hope to see you at one of our many events. You might event want to become a member of Surfrider.

we still have high jumping and barrel jumping, and i personally would like to be able to hold a banked slalom race in the small street course, and the small concrete section, I have some great ideas for a course....
maybe a longest carve in the pool, or the bowl, or another old school jam format in the pool, or the bowl. or a street contest, that you can ollie in.....just some idea.......

Washington DC Chapter of Surfrider will be holding a fundraiser Tuesday 6/17/03. Check it out on our web page http://www.surfrider.org/capitol/events.htm. There will be a silent auction on surf items including a 9'6" Surftech Hobie Longboard with the bid starting out at about $300 (that is 50% of retail cost).

Another event will be held the next day, Wednesday 6/18/03. As advertised in Surfer Mag we will be premiering a new surf movie in Arlington, VA. Check out the same web page http://www.surfrider.org/capitol/events.htm. I will be raffling off donated swag from various surf companies. Come on out and support the DC Chapter of Surfrider and socialize with some of the infamous longtime surfers in this area including the Annapolis Surf Club members and the OC, MD 65th Street Surfers.

Washington DC-Capitol Chapter 10th Anniversary Celebration!

Thursday, September 18 (with or without Hurricane Isabel)
Beach Party! 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
Rhodeside Grill, 1836 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201 (tel 703.243.0145)

The semi-annual chapter celebration of the Wash DC-Capitol Chapter of Surfrider Foundation will take place at the Rhodeside Grill in Arlington, VA http://www.rhodesidegrill.com/ Thursday Sept. 18 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the Underground event room.

The night of celebration will feature door prises, special guests, a special showing of the 1972 classic surf film FIVE SUMMER STORIES, food, cash bar (sorry), live music (after 10 pm), and - as required - a brief chapter election of officers - but don't let that scare you away because its not a beach party any more, IT'S A HURRICANE PARTY!

The Rhodeside Grill is located at 1836 Wilson Blvd which is right at the intersection of Rhodes Street and Wilson Boulevard (right next to Clarendon Blvd) and is just 2 blocks from the Courthouse (VA) Metro Station - and street parking is free after 6:30 pm!

This is our biggest celebration of the year (actually every 2 years) and should not be missed - make plans to come and join us as we celebrate 10 years of chapter community service and grass-roots activism in the Washington, DC metro area.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED...

As noted in our chapter communications last month, the Thursday Sept 18th celebration will also be our Wash DC-Capitol Chapter election for new officers in all positions.  As members of the chapter you are all eligible to be nominated to the Executive Committee of the chapter.  Unfortunately, due to personal reasons I can't accept a nomination to be re-elected as chapter chairman (or serve on the Executive Committee), but I will remain as an active chapter member and supporter as the ex-officio chairman.

The perks of being an Executive Committee member include supreme command of all chapter activities, programs and events (total power and control).  In addition, you can qualify for an automatic (and free) enrollment into the http://www.BroForm.com awesome wholesale discount program (save mucho $$$) for any number of outdoor sporting goods (surf, skate, snow, wake, and bike!!) from major labels/brands.

Please consider stepping forward to be nominated to assist in the chapter operations on the Executive Committee, its fun and rewarding!  There are plenty of experienced chapter members (including myself) who will be able to assist in the transition for any new officers and help continue the excellent chapter community service efforts and other existing programs.

Our current slate of officers and their eligibility are as follows:

Chairman - Darryl Hatheway (not eligible for re-election or any position, need nomination!!)
Vice-Chairman - David Riordon (eligible for re-election or any other position)
Treasurer - Jacque Riordon (eligible for re-election or any other position)
Secretary - (open position for any member)
Volunteer Coordinator - Nanette Parsons (eligible for re-election or any other position)
