Leathers would definitely be too hot for slalom in anyplace during the Summer, except in locations near the North polar ice cap or Antarctica. They could possibly be tolerable for sub40°F temps. T’was a great time of outlaw slalom yesterday. The temps were not a problem at all! In fact, when the conditions are right, I think I prefer skating in 35°F over skating in 80°F! All of them do. Sometimes a fall can be predicted and a knee slide can then be conciously executed. On the other end of the mishap spectrum, a fall could be nearly instantaneous, and then you won't know what saved you until after the fact.

I don’t think you should worry too much about the front lifting up. It doesn’t usually lead to disaster. If you are still overly worried about it, you could have some kind of backstop on the end that lets you know by feel that your foot is too far back.

Maybe Hegstrom liked the “vintage look” more than the safety prospect of his particular helmet choice. If so, he may not be willing to admit that his helmet was not structurally fit. The only thing that can be done when the wind gets near 20 mph is to get out of it, otherwise even cones that are doubled up start to blow away. Even at 15 mph wind speed, it can slow your run down to a crawl if it’s blowing in any direction other than downhill. Fountainhead is in the middle of some...
